Courses in physics, chemistry, electricity, and computer technology are also helpful, along with some knowledge of metallurgy. Welders need good eyesight, hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and the ability to concentrate on detailed work for long periods. They should be physically fit and able to bend, stoop and work in awkward positions. Workers often are exposed to a variety of hazards and must wear safety shoes, goggles, hoods with protective lenses, and other devices. Welders need to be willing to receive training and perform tasks in other production jobs. They often become certified in standard skills set by industry associations. Laser beam and electron beam welding, new fluxes, and other new technologies and techniques are improving the results of welding, making it useful in a wider assortment of applications.
