BSC focused on students now and during the interim

On Oct. 2, BSC President Larry C. Skogen gave his annual State of the College address to a full house in the Sidney

J. Lee Auditorium. While BSC’s employees were anxious to hear about the college’s status, it was Skogen’s appointment as interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System that had the room buzzing.

Appointed Sept. 25 by the State Board of Higher Education to serve through June 2015, Skogen said his ability to step up to the plate for North Dakota is directly tied to the ability shown by BSC employees to step up – both during the months he spent as acting interim chancellor and historically.

“As chancellor I’m going to try to get our conversation back to students and student learning in the state – the focus our campus has always maintained.”

And he’ll be back. Skogen’s contract as interim chancellor ensures his return to BSC as president after June 30, 2015.

“I love this place. I love the things that we’re doing here and I’m very proud of what we do here. I’ll do this, but then I want to come back.”

BSC’s interim president is yet to be determined. Skogen will spend October meeting with faculty, staff and student groups to gather input then provide a recommendation to the State Board of Higher Education He anticipates the board will approve the college’s recommendation.

The great state of the college Annually, the state of the college is determined in part by the fourth week enrollment numbers – the official headcount used by the 11 colleges and universities in North Dakota.

Maintaining its position as the third largest college in the university system, BSC’s enrollment held steady at just over 4,000 students. But Skogen noted that this particular enrollment number is deceiving. BSC has 73 enrollment sessions throughout the academic year, bringing new students onto the books. During 2012-13 for instance, 5,200 credit students were served, while our official enrollment number was 4,109.

Credit hour production – the factor that determines reimbursement dollars from the state – also remained steady.

Some notable changes within those overall numbers:

• First time freshmen up 14%

• Dual credit growth up 205% over the past five years

• Graduation rate is 46% (the national average is 29%)

• Retention rate is 68% (the national average is 53%)

• 52% of students come from Burleigh and Morton counties

• 67% of online students are North Dakota residents

“We are Mandan-Bismarck’s community college – that’s clear by the numbers,” Skogen noted.

In other newsOutside of enrollment, Skogen noted that the college remains focused on the 2013-18 Strategic Plan priorities which include special attention to retaining students, communication initiatives, as well as the development of the Communications and Creative Arts Center – currently in the planning stages with groundbreaking expected in Spring 2014.

Skogen closed the address by recognizing the student-focused efforts of employees.

“I know that you work very, very hard. It means everything to our college, our students. What you do is so important to this campus. I appreciate it, students and parents do too.”

Fall is all about change. The leaves turn, freshmen arrive and presidents depart… temporarily anyway. As we go to press, Dr. Skogen is gathering input from staff, faculty and students to determine who will lead us during the 20 months he will Marnie Piehl

serve as North Dakota University System interim chancellor. He’s worn two hats for the past several months as acting interim chancellor and BSC president. While we will miss his daily presence, the people of BSC continue to focus our expertise and energy on our students and the education that has made BSC your community college for 75 years.

Learn more – including who the interim president will be! – by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks for reading.

BSC launches “a day in the life” ads

Ad campaign leverages success

BSC launched new ads this fall – print, radio, TV and digital – targeted toward student and parent engagement. Extending the

Beyond brand into a “day in the life” concept, the ads depict three different students as they incorporate their education into their busy lives. The message is a natural evolution of earlier Beyond ads. The actors are all BSC students, and the ads were shot on campus and in Bismarck this fall.

Since first adopting a cohesive brand marketing campaign in 2007, top-of-mind awareness in the area went from 31.3 percent to 47.8 percent in 2012, according Mary Friesz, director of College Relations. “We’re the first college named when asked about affordable, quality education; and 92 percent of parents and 89 percent of students believe BSC has a good reputation.”

Almost half of students planning to attend college in the coming year named BSC as their first choice and the institution they plan to attend – up 20 percent from 2006.

The success has had a direct impact on admissions.

“Applications are up 42 percent over the past five years, and our enrollment is over 4,000 students again this fall – once again putting us third in size in the system after UND and NDSU,” says Karen Erickson, BSC director of Admission and Enrollment Services. “We know that these results are because students find that we deliver what we promise – a great education at an affordable price.”

BSC celebrates 75 years

Staff and students involved in celebrating 75 years

The college’s milestone year continues to unfold with celebratory events upcoming and ongoing. Nearly 60 interviews of former and current students, staff, faculty and

friends of the college are being woven together in a documentary scheduled to debut on January 23 on campus.

In addition to the interviews captured digitally, the team received a number of written reminiscences from alumni and friends including Russ Patchen, ’50. He and his late brother, Dick, both ran for the Bismarck Junior College track team. Patchen provided the following colorful tale of a 1949 meet in which BJC provided a surprising upset.

In 1949 the state had a college state meet with all the schools in the state, including UND and NDSU. UND had a sprinter by the name of “Rabbit” Welsh, a senior. He had run a 9.7 [second] 100-meter the week before and the world record was a 9.4 at that time. In the finals of the 100 my brother and I were in lanes right next to each other. He got a bad start, so I yelled “run damnit run!” He did and kicked this guy’s butt. Welsh was surprised and quite disappointed that a freshman from BJC beat him. The results were the same in the 220 – Dick kicked his butt again…Welsh was gracious enough to congratulate us.

Research for the documentary also included a deep dive into the substantial archives of Bismarck State College where collections of photos, newspaper articles, memorabilia and miscellany provide a rich and multilayered history of the college.

The archives are proving a great resource for some BSC graphic design students as well. The program’s 27 second year students are leveraging the 75 year celebration to design and construct two displays – one focused on the BSC logos over the years and the other on student activities and architecture.

Johanna Bjork, who recently took over archival duties after long-time BSC librarian and archivist Carolyn Twingley retired, said the students really enjoyed all they learned in the archives.

“They loved the bagpipes and the uniform, and looking at pictures of staff and faculty when they first started. They didn’t know a lot of things about the history – that BSC had a wrestling team or that James Doohan, the actor who played Scottie in Star Trek, visited campus,” she says. “The archives are a great resource. We have many college

related items, presidential papers, memorabilia, sports uniforms, trophies and documents, since the beginning of BJC in 1939.”

Thomas Marple, associate professor of graphic design and communications, says both BSC and the State Historical Society have been extremely helpful to the students. “[Both]opened their doors to our students. Johanna has been extremely helpful, and[BSC director of library services] Marlene Anderson has reviewed and has approved of most of what they would like to display.”

The students have until the end of the semester to complete their projects.

Clips from the documentary will be posted closer to the premier, and an open house is tentatively being planned to unveil the student displays. Information on events and the 75 year activities can be found at bismarckstate.edu/events and bismarckstate.edu/75years.

Strength We see it all around us. Despite high employment rates - which typically indicate fewer college enrollments - student enrollment at BSC is solid and steady. As has been the case for 75 years, industry depends on our graduates to fill the growing demand for employees with both technical and critical thinking skills.

Support Thanks to your support, the BSC Foundation surpassed $10 million in total grant and scholarship funding this past year. Since its inception, the philosophy of the Foundation has been to do the most with what we have. In the 2012-13 academic year, more than 400 students received financial support through scholarships.

Stability The BSC Foundation is proud to be part of what makes BSC great and its students successful. Your endowed investments generate earnings that provide a permanent source of funding for scholarships and grants ensuring the promise of an affordable education for generations to come.

Class Connections

Mike Bruner Professor, alumna help author create children’s book

Paula Grosinger, ’94, of Crain Grosinger Publishing in Mandan and Sean Thorenson, ’92, associate professor of graphic design, have made a dream happen for Dr. James Karn of Bismarck, a longtime storyteller. They helped him finalize his stories for publication in a collection of three stories titled “Little Jimmy’s Life on the Farm Stories,” now in its second printing.

After retiring from Northern Plains Research Lab in Mandan in 2003, Karn began writing to entertain his grandchildren. He also enjoyed reading his stories to children at local schools, the library, and the Open Door Community Center childcare agency. After deciding to do a children’s book, he contacted Grosinger, an editor, author and publisher, who edited the text, designed the page layout, and coordinated the printing process with the book manufacturer. Karn first met Thorenson at the local YMCA and forged an illustration deal from that connection. For more information, go to www.littlejimmystories.com
