• Assistive Technology Exchange Network (ATEN) is a unique

computer-recycling program established by United Cerebral

Palsy Seguin of Greater Chicago in 1995 to give Illinois public

school students with disabilities access to educational

technology via refurbished computers. Individuals and

corporations donate the used technology, regardless of its

condition, to be refurbished and distributed to K–12 schools.

• OUTCOMES: Since its inception, ATEN has served more

than 105,000 Illinois students with over 63,000

refurbished computer systems in 3,089 schools in over

2,960 communities. Serving all 102 counties in Illinois.

• This has translated to almost 8.35 million tons of

electronic waste recycled. Additionally, schools and

students have received thousands of computer-related

items including software programs, adapted keyboards,

printers, modems, scanners, touch screens, copiers and

other related technologies.

request an application form,

schools may contact ATEN or

download an online form. The

school may also request a

specific brand of computer and

quantity needed for the

students. Requests are fulfilled

on a first come first served

basis, and every computer

distributed is loaded with the

Windows Operating System and

Office Suite software.

• Mission: At times, acquiring basic medical equipment is

virtually impossible. Through this program, people with

temporary or permanent disabilities can secure free

motorized and manual wheelchairs, pediatric therapy

equipment, canes, walkers, shower benches and other

items.

• Since the program launched in 2003, the DME program has

distributed more than 1,139 free pieces of durable medical

equipment to needy people across Illinois.
