Relax. We’re glad to have you, just as you are. We believe Jesus Christ teaches us that, so we really mean it. You’re a child of God and you’re safe here, no matter what.

Each one of us is in a different place on this life journey. The person next to you may be here for the first time, or they may have been born into a family in our church for generations. We’re all continually learning, growing, and evolving as we connect in the Spirit with the rest of the world.

Children in church make squirmy joyful noises to the Lord! Babies cry! Relax about all that, too. If you wish, safe childcare is available for 4 and under. Your greeter will be happy to show you the way.

Please stick around after church for a few minutes if you have the time. We have refreshments and fellowship time in the lobby area. It’s a great way to get acquainted!

Check out the box below for how it all works. We’re all different, together, and God isn’t finished with us. Come and see!

ORDER of WORSHIPPalm Sunday

Taking bread, he blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, given for you. Eat it in my memory.” He did the same with the

cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant written in my blood, blood poured out for you.” — Luke 22:19-20 (The Message)

Proclamation of Entrance Into Jerusalem Luke 19:28-40 (N.T. pg. 83)

28After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it’” 32So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34They said, “The Lord needs it.” 35Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” 40He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

(REFRAIN) VERSE 2: The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went; our praise and prayers and anthems before thee we present. Welcome

“Let us prepare our hearts to worship God...”

* Hosanna, Loud Hosanna (The tune for the hymn is at the back of this booklet.) VERSE 1: Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang. To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. VERSE 2: From Olivet they followed ‘mid an exultant crowd, the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud; the Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait. VERSE 3: “Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer; the Lord of heaven, our King. O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice.

* Opening PrayerGracious God, this is Holy Week. Strengthen us to move beyond the parade of palms, to follow Jesus to the Cross.   United with faithful followers—through gates of righteousness, bring us into this New Jerusalem.  Let’s all praise God—in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Call to ConfessionFully human and fully God, the Lord Jesus knows our weaknesses and temptations. In the reformed tradition, we confess our sins corporately. Accepting our brokenness, let’s approach the throne of grace and mercy.

Prayer of ConfessionMerciful God, following Jesus is hard. We hide like guilty little children. We live for ourselves. We ignore our neighbors. We look away from the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. Have mercy and forgiveness, O God. Set us free in this confession, in your mighty power. O Lord, hear our prayers…

Response You Alone Can Rescue Redman/Myrin Who O Lord could save themselves Their own soul could heal Our shame was deeper than the sea Your grace is deeper still(Silence is kept for our personal prayers of confession.)

One: Amen.

Assurance of Pardon As God’s own people be merciful in action, kindly in heart, humble in mind. Be always ready to forgive as freely as God has forgiven you. And above all, be loving, and thankful for all that Christ has done for you. I declare in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, renewed and restored!

Response You Alone Can Rescue Redman/Myrin You alone can rescue You alone can save You alone can lift us from the grave You came down to find us led us out of death To You alone belongs the highest praise. Amen.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer for Illumination Holy God, by your Word you give light to the soul. Pour out your spirit of wisdom and understanding as the scriptures are read. Open our hearts and minds to life and holiness in your word.

Prophetic Reading Isaiah 50:4-9a (O.T. pg. 681)

4The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens— wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught.

5The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward.

6I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.

7The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame;

8he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

Epistle Reading Philippians 2:5-11 (N.T. pg. 197) 5Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

6who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited,

7but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form,

8he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.

9Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,

10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Page 9: Welcome, we are glad you are here!8a4d89648325fcb6de0a-91aecec599e36119cde3559ac738d094.r76.… · Check out the box below for how it all works. We’re all different, together, and

WORSHIP NOTES

Thank you to Elder Cheryl Bolton, Effie, Prisca, and Holly for reading today, and to our talented worship team of players, singers, and bell ringers!

What gifts do you bring? Share with us! Joyful worship comes from the soul of our collective Spirit. Come find your voice or vision here! Come play, sing, ring bells, read, lead, serve communion. If you have a gift of the arts such as music, drama, dance, poetry, prose, painting, or sculpting for examples, please give some thought to sharing it in worship. What a great blessing!

About Palm SundayPalm Sunday recreates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem for the Jewish Passover Festival on the first day of the last week of his life. Picture, if you can, a very political parade of solidarity with the oppressed and down-trodden. According to tradition, Jesus’ parade marches into Jerusalem through the Golden Gate (possibly the “Beautiful Gate” in Acts Chapter 3) from the East while across town, Pilate’s “peace-keeping” Roman army enters the city from the West. Is this victory, resistance, or both? The Golden Gate of the Old City was later sealed in medieval times. Some traditions believe that the Golden Gate will be unsealed when Christ comes again.

About the PalmsOur congregation partnered with the Presbyterian Hunger Program to use Eco-Palms. Usually, palms are harvested in rainforests. Middlemen transport the palms out of the communities for processing where more than half the palms are discarded because of poor quality.

Eco-Palm harvesters gather only quality palm fronds in a way that allows the plant to keep growing. The communities process and package the palms instead of selling to middlemen, allowing them to capture more of the profits. The added income enables the impoverished harvesters to buy shoes for their children and to pay for basic healthcare.

In addition, five cents of every Eco-Palm sold for Palm Sunday directly funds projects that improve the lives of all community members. This money provides scholarships

for students, pays a teacher’s salary, basic health care and supports elderly members of the community.

This year, we share the jubilation of Palm Sunday with the people who harvested our palms. As we wave our palms, we can truly say, “Hosanna in the Highest!”

About the Blowing of the ShofarWe blow the Shofar to connect us to our spiritual forebears of Judaism. Remember that Jesus and all the disciples are good Jews coming into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover on what we now call Palm Sunday. While the Torah (the first five books of our Bible) describes the blowing of the Shofar, there are not clear instructions about how/when to perform the tradition! Rabbinic Judaism gives us some clues generally speaking that the Shofar tradition is called for to announce the sanctity of the day in observance of important holidays.

More About Today’s WorshipWe are developing a more blended style of worship with new contemporary worship songs and music as well as our traditional hymns and pieces. All of our hymns are from the new Presbyterian hymnal Glory to God printed for you in the bulletin. The choir will sing. The bell choir will play. We will hear our students. We will hear soloists. We will hear the band. It’s a mix, and we may not have everything in the same day—unless you want to skip lunch. We hope it touches you.

About the Season of LentToday is Palm Sunday, the first day of “Holy Week” in the season of Lent which is “back-timed” based on the shifting calendar date for Easter. In the Western Church, Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. The Lenten tradition calls for fasting for 40 days to honor the 40 days of temptation and fasting that Jesus faced in the desert (see the canonical synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke). Or, you could try a new spiritual discipline instead of focusing just on fasting, which is only one of them. But, why are there 46 days in Lent instead of 40? Sundays don’t count! Each Sunday is a tribute to the resurrection, or a “mini-Easter,” and a day to

Page 16: Welcome, we are glad you are here!8a4d89648325fcb6de0a-91aecec599e36119cde3559ac738d094.r76.… · Check out the box below for how it all works. We’re all different, together, and

feast.

Today we wrap the sermon series for Lent focused on the spiritual disciplines. Our conversation partner is the book Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth by Richard J. Foster. He takes us through living into a number of good Christian practices including: Meditation, Prayer, Fasting, Study, Simplicity, Solitude, Submission, Service, Confession, Worship, Guidance, or Celebration. You can buy the book at any retailer or for any format of eReader.

About the Christ Candle We continue to burn the Christ Candle from Christmas and through Lent until Good Friday to recognize the light of Christ in the world connecting Christmas to Holy Week.

About Today’s ReadingsWe print the scripture readings in the bulletin, so you can follow along more easily. We also include the page numbers if you want to read from your pew Bible. Most Sundays, our readings are from that same New Revised Standard Version translation except where noted. Today, we let all the scriptures speak to us in whatever way God has intended without commentary.

About the Lord’s Supper Communion and baptism are the only two sacraments in the reformed tradition. We celebrate communion about once a month here at PCM. Our communion is all-inclusive: all are welcome, all who are blessed, all who come in the name of the Lord! The body of Christ comes with a gluten-free option, and the blood of Christ is represented by grape juice out of respect to those who struggle with alcohol. A Presbyterian understanding of The Lord’s Supper is that Christ is present in Spirit at the Lord’s Table, but not physically.

Questions to GoHoly Week. What does it mean to me?

How am I following Jesus, even to the Cross?

What is there to celebrate?

Fasting Good FridayHoly Week is here…let’s do this together! What does fasting look/feel like? Fasting is an amazing way to connect to God and each other no matter where you are. Plan some degree of fasting from sunset Maundy Thursday to sunset Good Friday. Fasting is not a means of seeking God’s blessings, as much as it is a means of seeking God. Fasting is not so much about food as it is about focus. Fasting is not so much about saying no to the body as it is about saying yes to the Spirit. Fasting is not about doing without, it is about looking within. Fasting is an outward response to an inward attitude and cry of the soul. We’re taking half-hour shifts all day—sign up on Breeze.

One Great Hour of Sharing, Sunday, April 21stSince 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Your gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, food for the hungry, and community development that helps people find safe refuge, start new lives, and work together to strengthen families and communities. Examples include: Nepal- programs that prepare rural communities for future disasters, disease prevention, occupational programs and water purifiers; Yemen- providing families in a conflict affected area with training and tools to protect, restore and promote their livelihoods; Dominican Republic- establishment of coffee plant nurseries and sales of agricultural products which help make a community more self sustainable.

Please consider a gift to One Great Hour of Sharing on Sunday, April 21. 100% of money collected on this day is forwarded to PCUSA to help with this program.

Day Camp 2019Our Day Camp starts Monday, June 24th to Friday, June 28th, 9 AM - 3 PM. PreK - 5th Grade. Per Capita 2019Each year PCM is assessed a per member fee to support the missions of the mid-level governing bodies (Presbytery and Synod) and the General Assembly of the PC(USA). Please consider covering this fee with a separate gift. It reduces the PCM budget line item by thousands if we all pitch in. The fee is $37 per member, including youth who have been confirmed. For example: Per couple, $74. Families with one youth, $111 and so on. Covering the per capita frees up your pledges and offerings to the operations and missions of our church. Please note “per capita” on your check or envelope. Thank you!

Mid-week Prayers/CommunionHere’s something you could start for Lent: Join us in the Parlor every Wednesday morning at 7:10am for a come-and-go round of prayers and the Lord’s Supper. It’s a great mid-week touchstone, and you’ll be on your way in 15 minutes. No kidding! Commuters, you’ll easily make the 7:32. Pastor Scott leads.
