WELCOME TO OUR

EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK We are fully into summer now, which means lots of folks traveling, including our own Father Lucio. He

will be leaving on vacation to visit his family in Mexico for the next couple of weeks. I have been blessed to minister in my home state but for our priests who come from another place, especially another country, those times of going home are precious. Please keep Fr. Lucio in your prayers for safe travel and restful time with family and friends.

In many ways the Church in the United States is dependent on priests coming from outside the country to supply the needs of our parishes. In the Diocese of Reno, for example, well over half of our parishes are staffed by priests from other countries, most especially India, the Philippines, and Mexico. We would have a real scarcity of priests but for these priests who have come to Nevada to serve. We continue to pray for the guiding Holy Spirit upon our Church in this crucial area of vocations to the priesthood. Pray, also, for the priests who serve our diocese from other countries. They have extra challenges in ministering here and need our support.

In Fr. Lucio’s absence we will be blessed to have a couple of our “retired” priests to assist with Masses, Fr. George Wolf and Fr. Norm King. We will also be welcoming Fr. Neil Pezzulo next weekend. Fr. Neil is a Glenmary Missioner priest and comes to us by our participation in the Annual Mission Co-operative effort of the US Church. Every summer the Diocese of Reno welcomes missionaries to come to preach and teach us about the work they do among the poorest parts of the Church and to invite us to support their work. Glenmary Home Missioners was founded in 1939 with a special apostolate to the poor, rural Church in the United States. Glenmary Missioners are priests, brothers and lay men and women. Fr. Neil will share with us what he and Glenmary Missions do to share the Good News and to support the struggling People of God in our country, particularly in the South. Fr. Neil will preach at all the Masses next weekend and seek our prayerful and financial support in the missionary work of the Church. As is normally the case in the Mission Co-op schedule, Fr. Neil will go to another of our parishes while he is here, so on the following weekend he will preach at St. John the Baptist parish in Lovelock. Fr. Neil will be with us for the week in between, taking some Masses and getting to see our beautiful area. Let us give Fr. Neil a hearty welcome and our support next week.

As our parishioners are traveling we also welcome the many traveling to and through Reno who join us for Mass this weekend. We are happy you are here! In a very different way, Saint Thomas Cathedral is a “mission” parish for our many tourists. We are supported by you and are happy to serve you. We welcome our local visitors as well, and encourage you to become a part of our parish community. Registration forms can be found in the vestibules or online: stacathedral.com. I also encourage all parishioners to consider signing up for regular online giving. That helps you and the parish, especially when you are away. As I close my notes, I am happy to report that we received a credit on our outstanding long-term debt in a sum just slightly over $39,000 because of the contributions made by our parishioners to the Diocesan Capital Campaign, Today, Tomorrow, Together. Thank you very much to all who pledged to this campaign and are fulfilling your pledge. DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE CHUCK Estamos en pleno verano ahora, lo que significa que bastantes personas viajan, incluyendo nuestro pro-

pio Padre Lucio. Él se irá de vacaciones durante las próximas dos semanas a visitar a su familia en Méxi-co. He tenido la bendición que mi ministerio todos estos años ha sido en mi estado natal, pero para muchos de nuestros sacerdotes que vienen de otro lugar, especialmente de otro país, esos tiempos de volver a casa son valiosos. Por favor, mantenga al Padre Lucio en sus oraciones para que tenga un viaje seguro y un tiempo de descanso con la familia y amigos.

De diversas maneras, la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos depende de sacerdotes que vienen de otros paí-ses para satisfacer las necesidades de nuestras parroquias. En la Diócesis de Reno, por ejemplo, más de la mitad de nuestras parroquias están atendidas por sacerdotes de otros países, especialmente India, Filipi-nas y México. Tendríamos una verdadera escasez de sacerdotes, si no fuera por estos sacerdotes de otros países sirven en Nevada. Seguimos orando para que el Espíritu Santo rija sobre nuestra Iglesia en esta área crucial de las vocaciones al sacerdocio. Oren, también, por los sacerdotes que sirven a nuestra dióce-sis de otros países. Ellos tienen desafíos adicionales en su ministerio y necesitan de nuestro apoyo.
