Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

I would sincerely like to thank the many people responsible for putting together last Saturday’s celebration in honor of Mary Magdalene. Last Saturday at a special Bilingual Mass, we blessed and dedicated a new sculpture, St. Mary of Magdala Proclaims the Resurrection. Sr. Mary Boys, Ph.D., and Academic Dean of Union Theological Seminarygave a wonderful reflection on the person of Mary Magdalene. This liturgical celebration was followed by a reception. Thanks to all who did so much for that special day.

It was last year on June 3, 2016 that Pope Francis elevated Mary Magdalene’s commemoration to a Feast, recognizing her key role in the Resurrection. When the commemoration of Mary Magdalene was upgraded to a Feast, The Vatican also created a new preface for her Feast entitled, de apostolorum apostola – meaning the apostle to the apostles. The preface is very beautiful and it tells the scripture-based story of Mary of Magdala, her role in the early Church as apostle to the apostles, and her divinely ordained role in spreading the Good News of Easter. The unofficial translation is as follows: In the garden He appeared to Mary of Magdala, who loved him in life, who witnessed his death on the cross, who sought him as he lay in the tomb, who was the first to adore him when he rose from the dead, and whose apostolic duty was honored by the apostles, so that the good news of life might reach the ends of the earth. This decision to elevate this commemoration to a feast in the current ecclesial context, seeks to reflect more deeply upon the dignity and role of women, on the new evangelization and on the greatness of the mystery of God’s Mercy. Pope John Paul II paid great attention not only to the importance of women in the mission of Christ and the Church, but also to, and with special emphasis on, the particular role of Mary of Magdala as the first witness who saw the risen Christ, and as the first messenger who announced the Lord’s resurrection to the Apostles . The importance of this continues today in the Church, as is evident in the new evangelization, which seeks to welcome all men and women “of every race, people, language and nation” (Rev 5: 9), without any distinction, to announce to them the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ while accompanying them on their earthly pilgrimage, and offering them the wonders of God’s salvation. Saint Mary Magdalene is an example of a true and authentic evangelizer, that is, an evangelist who announces the central joyful message of Easter

PASTOR’S LETTER NOTAS DEL PASTOR

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Quisiera dar las gracias sinceramente a las muchas personas responsables de organizar la celebración del sábado pasado en honor a María Magdalena. El sábado pasado en una misa especial bilingüe, bendecimos y dedicamos una nueva escultura “Santa María de Magdala Proclama la Resurrección.” Sor Mary Boys, Ph.D., la decana de la Union Theological Seminary, dio una maravillosa reflexión sobre la persona de María Magdalena. La celebración litúrgica fue seguida por una recepción. Gracias a todos los que hicieron tanto para ese día especial. Fue el año pasado, 3 de junio del 2016, que el Papa Francisco elevó la conmemoración de María Magdalena a una fiesta, reconociendo su papel clave en la Resurrección. Cuando la conmemoración de María Magdalena fue actualizada a una fiesta, el Vaticano también creó un prefacio nuevo para su fiesta titulado, de apostolorum apostola – significando “Apóstol de los apóstoles”. El prefacio es muy bello y cuenta la historia basada en las escrituras de María de Magdala, su papel en la iglesia primitiva como apóstol a los apóstoles, y su papel divinamente decretado de proclamar la Buena Nueva de la Pascua. La traducción no oficial es la siguiente:

Él se apareció visiblemente en el huerto a María Magdalena, pues ella lo había amado en vida, lo había visto morir en la cruz, lo buscaba yacente en el sepulcro, y fue la primera en adorarlo resucitado de entre los muertos; y él la honró ante los apóstoles con el oficio del apostolado para que la buena noticia de la vida nueva llegase hasta los confines del mundo.

Esta decisión de elevar la conmemoración a una fiesta en el contexto eclesiástico actual busca reflexionar con más profundidad sobre la dignidad y el papel de las mujeres, sobre la nueva evangelización y en la grandeza de la misericordia de Dios. El Papa Juan Pablo II le puso mucha atención no solo a la importancia de las mujeres en la misión de Cristo y la iglesia, pero también y con énfasis especial, sobre el papel particular de María Magdalena como el primer testigo que vio al Cristo resucitado y como la primera mensajera que le anunció la resurrección del Señor a los apóstoles. La importancia de esto continúa hoy en la iglesia, como es evidente en la nueva evangelización, que busca dar la bienvenida a todos los hombres y mujeres “de toda raza, lengua, pueblo y nación” (Apocalipsis 5:9), sin distinción, para anunciarles la Buena Nueva del Evangelio de Jesucristo mientras son acompañados durante su peregrinaje terrenal y ofrecerles las maravillas de la salvación de Dios. Santa María Magdalena es un ejemplo de una verdadera y auténtica evangelizadora, es decir, una evangelista que anuncia el mensaje central y alegre de la Pascua.
