We’re very excited about the development of this powerful app. This update was made almost entirely in response to user suggestions for improvements and new features. Please continue to send us your feedback, user requests, and any bug reports to [email protected].

We hope you !lled out the email contact form that appeared when you !rst launched TrialPad. That was the only time that the form will ever appear and allows us to inform you of any important updates or news. If you didn’t sign up, and now would like to, just email us at [email protected] stating you want to be included in any important emails.

What follows is a tour of the user interface and tools to get you up and running. Even if you are familiar with a previous version of TrialPad, please read through this document to make sure you fully understand the new features and improvements. We have worked very hard on the user interface and user experience, trying to make everything as intuitive as possible. However, due to limitations of the iOS, some features may operate in a way that is di"erent from what you might expect.

If you have an iPad compatible wireless printer you can print this guide by pressing the Export button and selecting Print Document, or you can select Email Document to email the guide to your desktop computer and print from there.

Make sure you’re holding your iPad in landscape orientation in order to see all the tools properly.

At the upper-left you have three tabs: Documents (where all your documents will be stored, as well as any still snapshots you take from video !les), Video (where your original and edited video clips will be stored), and Hot Docs (where TrialPad will place your marked up documents, video snapshots, or whiteboards when you designate them as a Hot Doc).

DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

TrialPad automatically separates your documents and video !les into two separate tabs. You can add folders to these tabs, or to the Hot Docs tab, by pressing the Plus “+” button at the bottom left corner of this section. TrialPad allows you to create as many nested folders as necessary for your matter.

You can further organize and manage your evidence by pressing the Edit button. Once pressed you will see at the top that you can now sort your !les by File Name and File Type. You can also select one of the check circles to allow you to Duplicate, Rename, Move, or Delete your !les (multiple selections can be made for each action, except Rename).

If you want to manually reorder your !les you can move them up or down in the list by pressing and dragging the three horizontal lines to the right of the !le name.

You can Move files to other folders within the same tab, and same Case, or even to another Case. However, it is not possible to move files to another tab, e.g. from Documents tab to Video tab.

TOOLS

A very important fact to remember is that a blue background or border indicates that a tool or option is selected or active.

Annotation tools will turn o! automatically after one use. Double-tap on the tool (similar to the shift-lock on the keyboard) and it will remain active until you press it again or select another tool.

ROTATE TOOL

When pressed, a pop-up will appear asking if you want to rotate the current page or the entire document. Each time the button is pressed the current page, or all the document pages, will be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

IN THIS EXAMPLE THE PEN TOOL IS ACTIVE

7

Let’s review all the tools that surround the preview window, starting in the top left corner:

TOOLS

CALLOUT TOOL

The Callout tool will cut out and magnify an area of a document. Draw a marquee around the area you want enlarged after selecting the tool. You can have multiple callouts from a particular page, from di"erent pages in the same document, or from two separate documents presented using split-screen (we’ll discuss split-screen later). Tap the callout with two !ngers to remove it from the screen. Best practice is to highlight, and then call out a section, as the highlight tool will not work on callouts. Also, the callout tool will not work on a document that has already been magni!ed with pinch-to-zoom.

HIGHLIGHT TOOL

Use the Highlight tool to draw a marquee around an area you want highlighted. It can be a single line or a whole paragraph. By pressing and holding this tool you will be presented with four color options for your highlighter (yellow, green, blue or pink).

PEN TOOL

Selecting the Pen tool allows you to draw or write on your document (remember to double-tap if you want to lock it on). This tool can also be used with the Whiteboard that we will discuss later. By pressing and holding this tool you will be presented with four color options (red, blue, green or black) and three stroke width options (thin, medium and thick).

REDACT TOOL

The Redact tool allows you to redact from any document. By pressing and holding this tool you will be presented with black or white redaction color options. CAUTION: Redactions can be removed from a document by selecting the Clear tool.

LASER TOOL

When using the Laser tool, you can press and hold on any part of a document to simulate a laser pointer to draw your audience’s attention to certain areas. This tool allso works across pages of di"erent documents when used in split screen mode. By pressing and holding this tool you will be presented with three color options (red, blue or green).

Remember that the annotation tools will turn o! automatically after one use, but if you double-tap on a tool it will remain active until you press it again or select a di!erent tool. A tool highlighted in blue is always the currently active tool.

The next tool is the Whiteboard tool. Press it to bring up a white screen, and use the Pen tool to draw on it. You can also use the Highlight tool colors, or the black Redact tool to draw blocks. The Whiteboard tool keeps your drawing until you press the Clear button or go to another document. Important: To save your drawing you must press the Fire button and a copy of your drawing will be saved to the Hot Docs section, otherwise your drawing will be lost when you go to another document.

The Export button gives you the option to email or print the current page, or whole document, with or without annotations that have been made to the document. You can also export a page, or whole document, to Dropbox in the same way.

PAGE COUNT INDICATOR

The Page Count Indicator tells you the current page and how many pages are in the entire document.

FIRE BUTTON

The Fire button, when pressed, saves the current page, or whole document, with any annotations, to the Hot Docs tab. You may use this button to save a page, or the whole document, with di"erent annotations made by di"erent witnesses. Or, you may save a witness’s Whiteboard drawing to Hot Docs to show the jury during closing.

TOOLS

SETTINGS

When pressed this will show you the version of TrialPad you have installed (please include the version number if you need to email us for support). You will also see options for the Background (Black, White, or Gradient), and the External Resolution if you are connected to a projector. TrialPad will default to the highest possible resolution available, but you have the option to select another resolution if desired. (The standard resolution of most projectors is 1024 x 768.)

OUTPUT

When the Output slider is switched to On you will see our three unique presentation options, which are Blank/Freeze/Present.

When you !rst slide the Output to On, TrialPad defaults to Blank to prevent the accidental display of evidence to the audience, but it will also display a small “TrialPad for iPad” message on the screen (only if you have chosen Black or White as the background) to let you know that everything is connected and working properly. To present a document simply press the Present button. To hold a document on the output screen as you search for another, just press the Freeze button. To quickly remove a document from the screen press the Blank button.

At the bottom of the preview window there are other buttons and options.

TOOLS

SPLIT SCREEN

The other button that appears when you slide the Output to On is the Split Screen button which looks like two pages side-by-side.

When you press this button, any document that is in the preview window will be placed on the left side of the screen and a blue border will appear around the document indicating that it is the active zone. If you tap on the right side, the blue border will move to the right side indicating that it is now the active zone. Any new document you select will be placed in the active blue zone.

If you want to return to single-page mode, simply press the Single Screen button. Whatever zone has the blue border will now become the single screen image.

UNDO/CLEAR

The Undo button will undo each of the previous annotations one at a time, while the Clear button will remove all annotations at once.
