The P2 Team

This Year in P2 our team consists of Ms Ziemons and Mrs. Ross teaching P2A and Ms Sutherland teaching P2B.

The purpose of this evening is to inform you about the way we teach at Hermitage Park and in P2 in particular.

Play Based Learning

In P2 we build on the play based learning that pupils received in P1. This means that we deliver as much of our reading, literacy and maths

through play and practical activities as possible.

As well as written work and focused group work, pupils play subject based games, such as word bingo, maths matching games and word

building games.

Literacy

In P2 we continue to follow the Edinburgh Literacy Rich Programme which pupils began in P1.

We will work on consonant blends such as th, sh and tch, as well as vowel diagraphs, such as ai, oa and igh. Pupils will progress through

the programme at a pace that suits them.

Pupils will be given plenty of practice identifying, spelling and writing these words.

Highland Literacy Reading

• An approach used throughout Scotland to develop reading skills.

• Very structured approach with key roles for pupils over the course of the week.

• In Primary 1 – 2 the key focus is on blending sounds, recognising common words and understanding text.

Maths and Numeracy

In P2 we continue to use the SEAL programme to support pupils in their numeracy learning. The SEAL programme is very structured and aims to give pupils sound understanding of basic maths and helps develop mental maths agility. We also practise mental maths skills through Hermie Counts.

Hermie Counts

• We are aiming to improve our mathematical mental agility across the school.

• Hermie Counts will focus on daily 10 to 15 minute mental agility at the start of every maths lesson.

• The whole school will focus on each aspect at the same time.

Home Learning

Home learning gives pupils the chance to practise what they have learnt in school as well as to show their parents what they have been learning.

In P2 Home learning consists of the weekly reading book, the SEAL Home Learning Wall and the word lists that were included in the reading folder.

We understand that not all parents will be able to do homework with their child every night. However, we ask that parents try to hear their children reading as often as possible and try to complete the maths activities suggested on the SEAL sheet a few times a week.

What are the best ways to support your Child’s Learning?

There are many ways in which you can support your child’s learning. These are some ways which not only support the individual, but also the class, ensuring learning is improved for all:

• Whilst there will be occasions on which pupils will be delayed in getting to school, we would ask that every effort is made to ensure that pupils are here on time at the start of the day.

• Label all clothing, as searching for lost items is very time consuming and takes away from learning time.

• Make sure your child has a PE kit and that they practise changing into and out of their uniform at home, so that less time is wasted between lessons.

• Practise reading with your child every evening if possible and also practise their word lists, as these will help with words they cannot read using phonics.

• Put the Reading Book Folder in your child’s bag each evening, so that they bring it to school every day, especially on a FRIDAY, which is the day we take in the old reading books and make up the folders for the following week.
