Welcome to the Newark International Film Festival

The Newark International Film Festival was founded by Kenneth Gifford, Director of the Newark Office of Film and Television and Ironbound Studios. As a filmmaker and industry leader, Kenneth Gifford has a passion for the arts and understands the importance of a strong and successful festival and how it can be a benefit to the community and industry as a whole.

One of the main features of the NIFF is the Goodwin Award for Innovation in Filmmaking in homage to Rev Hannibal Goodwin, the Episcopal priest who invented celluloid film in 1887 in Newark, NJ. Each year one celebrity is presented with the award for their outstanding innovation in the art of filmmaking.

A Look At The Festival

Opening NightThe Newark International Film Festival begins with a star studded red carpet VIP reception on opening night for dignitaries, sponsors, celebrities and partners. The reception is hosted by the NIFF host committee and the celebrity ambassador. Screenings Screenings during the film festival will be shown throughout Newark at cultural anchor institutions. The festival's screening partners have played a key role in the festivals success. The festivals screening partners are as follows: Essex County College, Rutgers College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Symphony Hall, Newark Museum, City Plex 12 and Military Park.Youth FestivalNIFF is very proud to offer a youth component to the NIFF for youth under 21 years old. The youth festival will be included in the NIFF body but will be governed by a separate group to ensure that the youth filmmakers are treated fairly and have the same opportunities available to the professional filmmakers in the NIFF. Adult filmmakers are not allowed to enter the youth festival however a youth can enter into the adult section. WorkshopsThroughout downtown Newark the festival hosts a number of workshops for actors, directors, producers, filmmakers and writers, as well as stunt exhibitions and training and celebrity mixers. We are especially excited about workshops and demonstrations of film production equipment highlighting new technologies.

A Look at the Festival

Community ImpactIn partnership with a local youth non-profit and the Newark Office of Film and Television, NewarkIFF will provide year round community outreach services, including youth mentoring, training and job development in the film industry for Newark-area youth and adult residents.

Pop - Up ConcertsThroughout the 3-day festival, NIFF hosts pop-up concerts strategically positioned at high visibility outdoor locations in the downtown Newark area.

Awards Ceremony The 2017 Newark International Film Festival award show is a two hour special event with celebrity hosts and performances. The NIFF awards show is filmed and packaged for TV and live streaming.

Wrap PartyClosing the 3-day festival is the star studded event filled with dignitaries, celebrities, sponsors and attendees.
