How Does Early Childhood Home Visiting Work?

Michigan’s early childhood home visiting programs connect trained professionals with vulnerable and at-risk mothers and families to nurture, support, coach, educate and offer encouragement with the goal that all children grow and develop in a safe and stimulating environment.

What We Learned

Data collection and reporting windows don’t always match legislative timeframes

MIHP and MIECHV programs measure data differently making apples-apples comparisons difficult

Results based accountability is not apples-apples comparison

DGIS Data- What We Know

Families served by MIECHV showed improvement in family economic self-sufficiency, with an increase in household income and benefits, as well as an increase in hours spent in paid employment.

Coordination and referrals for other community resources and supports improved as well, with increased identification and referral for community service needs.

Michigan will continue to work toward improvement in the area of child injuries, child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment, particularly through reducing emergency department utilization and preventing child maltreatment.
