Welcome Welcome to the final Western Region AFCA newsletter for 2014. We hope this newsletter finds you well, and you managed to achieve the goals you set at the start of the year. In this newsletter, you will find a range of information, including drills, articles, and resources etc, which have all been provided to you as part of your AFCA membership. AFCA WESTERN REGION COACH OF THE YEAR 2014

The Brook on Sneydes played host to the 2014 annual Australian Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Western Region Coach of the Year Awards Dinner on Thursday 18th September. Over 150 guests filled the room to help celebrate and recognise the significant contribution of the region’s coaches throughout the 2014 football season. The night featured prominent football media personality Tony Schibeci as MC, as well as a decorated panel of guest speakers, including current AFL Assistant Coaches Steven King and Lindsay Gilbee; and star female footballer Steph Chiocci. Following an entertaining and informative discussion with Tony, and a range of questions from the audience, awards were presented in the coaching categories of Auskick, Junior, Youth, Female and Senior. The winners of the categories were as follows

Each coach received a plaque, donated by the naming sponsor, in recognition of their outstanding achievements and hard work throughout the year. They will now be nominated for the State Coach of the Year Award, to be held at the MCG on Friday November 14th.

The night also gave the opportunity to acknowledge the four Ross Faulkner ‘Coach of the Month’ award recipients throughout the 2014 season, as well as present the Ascot Vale Sports and Trophies ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for contribution to football, which was awarded to long-time Western Region AFCA committee member Dean Anderson.

Having experienced significant growth in recent years to over 1,100 registered members in 2014, it is clear to see that coaching in the West is on the rise, and the Western AFCA committee remains dedicated to acknowledging the high calibre of coaches on display within the region. The committee would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all nominees for their efforts. ROSS FAULKNER COACH OF THE MONTH - JUNE

June 2014 – Peter Lloyd (Bellbridge Auskick Centre)

The Ross Faulkner AFCA Western Region “Coach of the Month” for June 2014 is Peter Lloyd from the Bellbridge Auskick Centre. This award recognises some of the great work being done by coaches in the western region community and reinforces the importance of good coaching in local football, schools and Auskick. Peter is coaching in his 10th straight year at Bellbridge Auskick. He started when his son was in grade prep and has continued on, even though his son finished Auskick 4 years ago. The kids love Peter and the parents have nothing but praise for him. Peter goes above and beyond just coaching, through organizing and running yearly excursions, organizing half time games, setting up all our equipment, attending all meetings and yearly functions, and has never missed a session. Peter will be guaranteed to be there, rain, hail or shine! Peter makes sure all Auskickers get a trophy and certificate on presentation day. If there are any kids who are unable to attend, Peter will drive to each and every kid’s house to ensure they don't miss out on receiving their trophy and certificate. Peter receives a Coaching resource pack courtesy of AFCA Western Region for being the monthly winner. July 2014 – Michael Andrew (Wyndham Suns FC) The Ross Faulkner AFCA Western Region “Coach of the Month” for July 2014 is Michael Andrew from the Wyndham Suns Football Club. This award recognises some of the great work being done by coaches in the western region community and reinforces the importance of good coaching in local football, schools and Auskick. One of Michael’s greatest strengths is being able to identify where players struggle, he will work tirelessly to help them, and then on game day have them believing that they can go out and contribute to the team. Michael looks to support his boys at all times looking to give them some general guidance in what they can do to help themselves, and focuses this support with regards to both on and off the field issues. Michael is approachable to all around the club from players, to parents and committee members. The fact that the team will play in the finals in a top age competition is a bonus, as his first priority has always been improving every player’s ability and confidence. Anything extra that comes from that is a real credit to him and the boys. Michael receives a Coaching resource pack courtesy of AFCA Western Region for being the monthly winner. Williamstown FC – Community Coaching Seminar Williamstown Football Club played host to an Australian Football Coaches Association (AFCA) seminar at their home ground, Burbank Oval, on Monday 28th July. The event featured Williamstown assistant coaches Brett Henderson and Adam Potter as key speakers, presenting a wide variety of theoretical and practical material with a specific focus on ways to coach team defence and midfield stoppages. The seminar was attended and well supported by a range of accredited coaches from across the western suburbs, many of whom left at the end of the night with an impressive array of tips and wisdom to add to their coaching arsenal. Henderson and Potter are considered to be two of the more well-credentialed and highly regarded coaches within the western suburbs football community, and have each played a significant part in Williamstown’s consistent VFL form in 2014, including their recent demolition of West Perth in the Foxtel Cup Grand Final. Henderson praised the coaches for giving up their time and said that their attendance at the seminar reflected well on their initiative to make themselves better coaches. He was impressed with the groups willing to listen and take things on board, and spoke of the Williamstown Football Clubs willingness to provide this sort of support to all coaches in the west.
