A message from Fr. Jake….. This weekend our parish is hosting the Women's CEW Mini-retreat. The Men's CEW Mini-retreat will be held in two weeks. The theme for these gatherings is "Lead Us On," and though our community is not gathering together for a CEW weekend this year because of the ongoing pandemic, these afternoon sessions will give people the opportunity to tap into God's grace through speakers, music, and communal prayer. I want to thank the CEW Board for working hard to provide these opportunities for renewal despite the challenges. We look forward to hosting CEW Weekends for Women and Men in the coming months, so if you or someone you know wants to attend one of these weekends, please contact the parish office. We will pass along your name to the CEW teams for future communication. Ash Wednesday is now less than two weeks away. We will have Masses on Ash Wednesday at 7:00AM, 12:05PM, and 6:00PM. Ashes will be distributed at the end of Mass as people leave the church, and they will be put on people's foreheads with a Q-Tip. We will also be recording Ash Wednesday Mass, which will be available through the parish website and Facebook page at 7:00AM on February 17th. A link will also be sent out for this Mass through Constant Contact. In next weekend's bulletin, we will have a full listing of all events and opportunities that will be made available to parishioners during Lent. I also want to offer some personal reflections that has filled my heart and mind this week. February 3rd was the three year anniversary of Msgr. Parizek's death. I came across some of his documents this week, so the combination of his death anniversary and his papers got me thinking and reflecting on his ministry here at OLV. I am sure that he would have been better at navigating the challenges of COVID-19 because of his many years of experience of being a priest and leader. However, I believe that he would be proud of all that the parish has been able to accomplish over the last eleven months. We have faced unique challenges that we have never faced before in our 58 years of serving Northwest Davenport, and unfortunately, there are probably still more challenges to come. However, the solid foundation of our parish and school has allowed us to response in ways that we could have never imagined, and as a result, we are doing great ministry in the midst of difficult circumstances. With all of this being say, I am more appreciative of Msgr. Parizek's leadership now than when I arrived at OLV in July of 2016. I knew I was blessed five years ago but again, I am truly blown away by the blessings that the Lord has poured in my life.

It is not just Msgr. Parizek's leadership and work that built the solid foundation of the parish and the school. It is all the parishioners who have called OLV home over the years that have contributed to the strength of this community. The time, talent, and treasure that you have contributed has prepared us for these challenges, and together we are addressing them and growing through our collective strength. Leaders sometimes get most of the credit (and most of the blame as well), but a leader is only made strong by those who support this person.

Therefore, I thank God for the opportunity to be the Pastor here at OLV, and I pray that I may have the opportunity to continue to serve here well into the future.

Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!

Mary was given a different title for each place that she appeared. Our Lady of Lourdes is the title she was given after she visited Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen-year-old girl in 1858. Her first visit to Bernadette was on February 11. Bernadette lived in a very poor house in Lourdes, France, with her parents, two brothers, and a sister. (It used to be a jail!) One day Bernadette was out with her sister and a friend to gather wood for the fire. Bernadette, who suffered from asthma and was often sick, did not cross over the stream to gather wood on the other side with her sister and friend. While they were gone, Bernadette heard a noise over near a cave-like area, and she went to investigate. There, Bernadette saw a lovely lady dressed in white who had a blue sash around her waist and a rose on each foot. She was beautiful! What did Bernadette do? How many times did she see the Lady? What happened to help others believe? As a family enjoy the movie from 1943 The Song of Bernadette to find answers to these questions. Check for options through your library, YouTube or Amazon. Do an internet search to read details about the story of Our Lady of Lourdes. Find information about when the latest miracle occurred at the site in Lourdes. Let “Our Beautiful Mother” come to you. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.

We have added a second Confirmation Mass this year to better allow for social distancing. Our Lady of Victory will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation (pandemic permitting), on April 17th, at 10:30am and at 1:30pm. We’ll have practice the evening before (April 16th) at 6pm in the Gathering Space. Details on pictures and conversations with the Bishop to come!

In this week's Cozy Corner, Carol Burns, RN will be giving information about how pre-existing conditions are affected by COVID. Awareness of your pre-existing condition will help you stay healthy. Proverbs 3:8 says, "This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." For our February Theology on Tap we’re

hoping to talk about cultural competency with Darius Villalobos from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry! Find out more at: https://www.facebook.com/

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

From your Parish Nurses

February is Heart Disease awareness month. Heart disease is easier to treat when detected early. Your doctor can talk with you about steps you can take to reduce your heart disease risk. This is especially important if you have a FAMILY HISTORY of heart disease. Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect your heart and include:

Blood vessel disease, such as coronary artery disease Heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias)

Heart defects you're born with (congenital heart defects)

Heart valve disease

Disease of the heart muscle

Heart infection Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices. Always call 911 or emergency medical help if you think you might be having a heart attack. Seek emergency medical care if you have these heart disease signs and symptoms: Chest pain Shortness of breath Fainting

Stewardship Moment When Simon and his companions found Jesus, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” Mark 1:37 People today continue to search for Jesus, for his message, his encouragement, his presence. As stewards, our task is to make Jesus present by what we say, what we do, how we act, how we support others, how we love.

Wow, don't look now but Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, February 17th. We have 10 days to indulge before we start to sacrifice by “giving up something” or “doing something extra”. Lent may be a good time to think about a sacrificial gift to the OLV foundation.

Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.

Support your locally owned businesses with

Victory Vouchers! The outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in

difficult times for many of our local parishioner owned businesses, which are incredibly vital to our community.

Need an oil change or car repair? Give River City Tire a call at 563-386-2700! Tell them you are a member of OLV and they will donate 5% back to the parish (no voucher/gift card needed).

Feeling hungry? Pick up lunch or dine in at Tappa’s Steakhouse, Lunardi’s or Smokin’ Butt BBQ.

Victory Vouchers (gift certificates) are available for purchase in the Parish office from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday - Friday. In a hurry...give us a call at 563-391-4245 and we can have them ready for you to pick up or we will deliver them out to your car.

Stewardship Prayer Warriors It’s easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say when a neighbor needs help, when invited to help with a project, join a ministry, or when asked to give financial support? Often times we are called when its’s not comfortable or convenient. Yet nearly one year into the COVID pandemic, there is so much hurt and need. This month please pray that the people of OLV will be especially attentive to God’s call to service and sharing whenever, wherever asked. May the Holy Spirit grant us the strength and wisdom to act appropriately. To receive monthly steward intentions electronically send an email to [email protected]. Type “Add Me” into the subject line and give your first and last name in the body of the email. Contact information is kept private.

"Well and good if all things change, O Lord God, provided I am rooted in You." - St. John of the Cross Nourish, the OLV support group for caregivers will meet Thursday, February 18th virtually via Zoom at 1pm. Our topic for this month is “The Gains in Change-Losses and Growth.” Change is inevitable on our caregiving journey; we can find a deeper purpose and meaning in the face of hardship and sadness.

If you are a caregiver and would like to join us, please call or text Char at 563-508-3890 with your email address so you can be invited to join our virtual meeting. You will receive an invite Monday, February 15th or Tuesday, February 16th. We hope to "see" you there.

Thanks to the generosity of the Parish, the Hunger Ministry was able to provide to Cafe On Vine; 350 pieces of chicken, accompanied by 17 dishes of potatoes, vegetables, desserts, and 5 bags of canned goods/non perishables. This supports the meals they serve out their window and the meals delivered to Humility Homes and Services sheltered residents. The Hunger Ministry will be providing another meal in March. Thanks one and all!

Social Action/Christian Service Lenten Project

This year our Lenten service project is to help lessen food insecurity for our local homeless persons or to help lessen food cost to assist in housing expenses. Each week during Lent, we will include a listing of items that are needed in the bulletin. "They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water." - Isaiah 49:10 Please put the items you wish to donate in the boxes by the display on local food insecurity in the Gathering Space. Volunteers will deliver these items to St. Anthony's to help restock their food pantry/McAnthony's window, Riverbend Food Bank and Cafe on Vine. Cash and check donations will also be accepted. Please make checks payable to the organization you would like to donate to. You can drop your donation in the collection box at church or deliver it to the parish office. Make sure to put SOCIAL ACTION on the envelope or in the memo section of the check. If you have any questions, please call Honore at: 563-391-7953. Thank you for your support.
