PROGRAMME 2019/2020 | 1 Welcome to the Digital Concert Hall T he time has finally come! Four years have passed since the Berliner Philharmoniker elected Kirill Petrenko as their future chief conductor. Since then, the orchestra and con- ductor have given many exciting concerts, fuel- ling anticipation of a new beginning. “Strauss like this you encounter once in a decade – if you’re lucky,” as the London Times wrote about their Don Juan together. With the 2019/2020 season, the partnership officially starts. It is a spectacular opening with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, whose over- whelmingly joyful finale is perfect for the festive occasion. Just one day later, the work can be heard once again at an open-air concert in front of the Brandenburg Gate, to welcome the people of Berlin. Further highlights with Kirill Petrenko follow: the New Year’s Eve concert, featuring works by Gershwin and Bernstein, a concert together with Daniel Barenboim as the soloist, Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival and in Berlin, and – for the European concert – the first appearance by the Berliner Philharmoniker in Israel for 26 years. In addition to all new beginnings, wonderful traditions are continued. These include, in par- ticular, the guest performances of longtime friends such as Herbert Blomstedt, Gustavo Dudamel, Mariss Jansons, Paavo Järvi, Zubin Mehta, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Christian Thielemann. Of course, Sir Simon Rattle returns to the Berliner Philharmoniker – with rarities that he has never conducted here before. The women among this season’s guests play a particularly important role: the conductor Emmanuelle Haïm, the singers Marlis Petersen – the orchestra’s Artist in Residence – Diana Damrau, Elīna Garanča, Anja Kampe and Julia Lezhneva, plus the instrumentalists Isabelle Faust, Janine Jansen, Alice Sara Ott and Anna Vinnitskaya. Yet another focus should be mentioned: the extraordinary opportunities to hear members of the Berliner Philharmoniker as protagonists in solo concertos. We invite you to accompany the Berliner Philharmoniker as they enter the Petrenko era. Look forward to getting to know the orchestra again, with fresh inspiration and new per- spectives, and in concerts full of energy and vibrancy. www.digital-concert-hall.com

Welcome to the Digital Concert Hall

T he time has finally come! Four years have passed since the Berliner Philharmoniker elected Kirill Petrenko as their future chief

conductor. Since then, the orchestra and con-ductor have given many exciting concerts, fuel-ling anticipation of a new beginning. “Strauss like this you encounter once in a decade – if you’re lucky,” as the London Times wrote about their Don Juan together.

With the 2019/2020 season, the partnership officially starts. It is a spectacular opening with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, whose over-whelmingly joyful finale is perfect for the festive occasion.

These include, in par-ticular, the guest performances of longtime friends such as Herbert Blomstedt, Gustavo Dudamel, Mariss Jansons, Paavo Järvi, Zubin Mehta, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Christian Thielemann. Of course, Sir Simon Rattle returns to the Berliner Philharmoniker – with rarities that he has never conducted here before. The women among this season’s guests play a particularly important role: the conductor

Emmanuelle Haïm, the singers Marlis Petersen – the orchestra’s Artist in Residence – Diana Damrau, Elīna Garanča, Anja Kampe and Julia Lezhneva, plus the instrumentalists Isabelle Faust, Janine Jansen, Alice Sara Ott and Anna Vinnitskaya. Yet another focus should be mentioned: the extraordinary opportunities to hear members of the Berliner Philharmoniker as protagonists in solo concertos.

We invite you to accompany the Berliner Philharmoniker as they enter the Petrenko era. Look forward to getting to know the orchestra again, with fresh inspiration and new per-spectives, and in concerts full of energy and vibrancy.

4K-Kamera der Digital Concert Hall

VISION OF THE FUTURE

The Digital Concert Hall broadcasts the concerts of the Berliner Philharmoniker in the best possible quality with the support of our technology and development part-ner, Panasonic: a company that enjoys the highest reputation both in professional video production and home entertainment. A key project of this partnership is the setting up of a 4K/HDR video studio in the Philhar-monie with the very latest professional cameras. 4K is the video quality of the future and delivers a picture with

four times the resolution of current HD. You will then be able to experience the Berliner Philharmoniker more vi-vidly and richer in detail than ever before. Further pro-jects are in preparation. The goal is always the same: concert broadcasts that are as true-to-life as the original.

When Kirill Petrenko performed Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker in March 2017, one critic was “stunned at how beautiful and breathtakingly exciting this music can be”. This fi rst audio release of the orchestra and its new chief conductor refl ects the whole sonority and intensity of the interpretation – and offers a taste of an exciting new beginning.
