About The Keynotes

Scott Bellini, Ph.D. is the Director of the Social Skills Research Clinic (SSRC), a university-based center specializing in developing and empirically examining the outcomes of social skill interventions for youth with ASD. He is also a faculty member in the School Psychology program at Indiana University, Bloomington, a licensed psychologist in the State of Indiana, and an endorsed Health Services Provider in Psychology. Bellini is currently conducting research on professional development outcomes for educators, anxiety disorders, and social skill interventions, including video modeling for youth on the autism spectrum. He has published numerous research manuscripts and has provided consultation and training to families and professionals in more than 35 states on the topic of social skills programming for students with ASD. Bellini is the author of the book, Building Social Relationships, which was named the Literary Work of the Year by the Autism Society.

Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP has over 25 years of experience in diagnostic evaluations and treatment of executive

dysfunction. Ms. Ward holds a faculty appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health

Professions. Sarah is an internationally recognized expert on executive function and presents seminars and workshops

on the programs and strategies she has developed with her Co-Director Kristen Jacobsen. Their 360 Thinking Executive

Function Program received the Innovative Promising Practices Award from the National Organization CHADD. She has

presented to and consulted with over 600 public and private schools in Massachusetts, across the United States and

internationally. Other awards received include: MGH Expertise in Clinical Practice Award, the Distinguished Alumni

Award and the Faculty in Excellence Award from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions

(2002, 2011) and ACE award from ASHA 2013 and 2016.

You will hear stories from employees with disabilities and their managers about reasonable accommodations, the hiring

process, and challenges and successes in their employment journeys.

FSC 113B: Vanessa Anderson-Smith - A Multisensory Approach to Speech and Feeding Therapy

For many children with Autism, traditional speech therapy approaches such as “look at me, listen to me, now say

it like me” simply are not effective. We must bring in a sensory-motor approach in addition to teach children how

to move their muscles for better speech and feeding. This presentation will discuss the importance of a

multisensory approach to speech production and how feeding and myofunctional disorders impact speech

clarity.

FSC 114: Dr. Julie Ashworth – Using picture books to teach understanding and acceptance of family members,

friends and classmates on the autism spectrum disorder.

Explicitly teaching acceptance of and empathy for others that are different from us should be a transformative

experience for young children and youth. Teaching with picture books can be the catalyst for children to make

personal connections and increase their acceptance of and empathy for family members, friends and schoolmates

Do what you do…just make one tiny tweak and turn the core classroom objectives and tasks into powerful tools to teach students executive control skills for classroom and treatment interventions. The ‘Get Ready * Do * Done’ program teaches students the process of how to visualize simple, multi-step and complex tasks and assignments and then sequence and plan the requisite steps to fully complete work.

Teach students how to break down complex tasks and assignments and then plan for, organize and initiate tasks

Long Term Project Management is a challenge for students with executive dysfunction as they struggle to see into the future to plan ahead for completing the smaller parts of the project. Learn how to help students visually break large projects into smaller steps, to estimate time to complete and schedule these steps, to visually learn the impact of procrastination and to prioritize steps of the project. FSC 113A: Megan Wiessner, Amanda Barton. Bringing It Home: What can I do at home to help my young child with autism? Therapists, teachers and other specialists have specific models and programs for teaching skills to young children with autism. But what can parents do at home that won’t take too much time away from daily activities or their other family members? This session will highlight easy-to-master strategies that can be incorporated into your daily routines and will help your child to increase interaction, play and communication skills. Video examples, handouts, and discussion will be utilized for multi-modal learning and practical application. Intended for parents with children under the age of 5. FSC 113B Elaine Roberts, Brenda Smith. Charting the Life Course - Creating a Vision and Planning the Journey to a Good Life. Everyone wants a good life and defines their good life in their own way. Forming a vision, as well as planning for the present and future, helps students plot a trajectory for a full, inclusive, quality community life. This interactive session will focus on The Trajectory and Integrated Supports Star, tools to help everyone of all ages – from the very young child to an adult or somewhere in between – think differently, plan support and explore life experiences for their journey that point their trajectory in the direction of a good life. This session is for educators and anyone who interacts with individuals and families at any age and stage of life. FSC 114: Lora Barthelman - Providing Evidence-Based Music Interventions to Enrich Lives for Those on the Spectrum

Participants will learn the What? Why? When? Where? And How? of music-based interventions used in music

therapy. Hands-on examples will be provided for a variety of goal areas and settings. Come experience the power of

music!

FSC 116 - Scott Swier – Essential Estate Planning Tips for Families Who Have a Child with Autism Raising a child is challenging. However, for a family with a child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, concerns about that child’s future are magnified. Some children with autism will have a higher degree of independence, while others will need special care for a life time. Planning for the future when you have a child with aut ism can be difficult. However, if you take a strategic approach, you can pave the way toward a successful life for your child. Learn how to infuse executive function based instruction into your existing writing curriculum to support students in developing executive control for the writing process, to improve initiation of writing tasks, to increase the quality and volume of their thought retrieval, to expand on their ideas and to

FSC 113A/B: Dr. Alex Kloth - Research Highlights from Sensorimotor Research in Autism Dr. Kloth will share an overview of autism from the neuroscientists' perspective--what the most interesting research is right now, and the science that everyone who has or works with an individual with autism should know. Issues with sensorimotor research are well documented in patients with autism, and neurobiologists are working to uncover the brain circuitry involved to better understand this component of autism as well as potential avenues for therapy. 3:30PM– Conference Concludes – please complete and submit your conference evaluation. PRESENTER INFORMATION

Vanessa Anderson-Smith, MA CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and owner of Anderson-Smith Speech Therapy, LLC in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She attended Augustana University for her bachelor’s degree and received her master’s degree from the University of South Dakota. In addition to being a TalkTools Instructor, she has received training in PROMPT, SOS Feeding Therapy, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, orofacial myofunctional therapy, sensory integration, and tongue/lip tie.

Dr. Julie Ashworth is an Assistant Professor of Education at Augustana University. She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Special Education and Deaf Education from Augustana College; her master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in science and technology from Augustana College; and her Ed.D. in Educational Administration and Adult Higher Education from the University of South Dakota. Her research and passion involves preparing future teachers to teach all students, especially students from diverse backgrounds, students living in poverty and students with disabilities. She created and directs Augustana FRIENDSLink which is a United Way Partner Agency that establishes authentic friendships between college students and their peers with disabilities.

Lora Barthelman, MS, MT-BC- Lora received a Master’s of Science in Music Therapy with an emphasis on research and music technology and a B.S. in Music Therapy from Indiana University and is certified through the National Certification Board for Music Therapists. She has completed an advance practice specialty in Neo-Natal Intensive Care Music Therapy from Florida State University and Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, and recently completed her Neurologic Music Therapy (NM T) credential from Colorado State University. She is a member of the American Music Therapy Association and a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional music organization. Lora is the chair of the South Dakota Music Therapy Task Force with the American Music Therapy Association. She is a graduate of Partners in Policymaking for South Dakota, year 13. Lora is a past chair of the governor appointed Family Support Council for the state. She is a certified trainer for the Tools for Positive Behavior Change parenting curriculum. Lora has been practicing music therapy in South Dakota and southwest Minnesota since 1993 in a variety of settings and populations. Her emphasis is early childhood special needs and individuals with developmental disabilities. Lora currently is in private practice with Music Therapy Services of South Dakota, LLC and holds contracts with school districts, agencies and private clients.

Amanda Barton, Ed.S., MCSP, BCBA, LBA is the outpatient behavior coordinator at LifeScape in Sioux Falls. Amanda has worked with individuals with autism and a variety of other developmental disabilities for the past eight years in the roles of special education teacher, school psychologist and behavior analyst.

Dr. Kathleen Cook joined the faculty in the Education Department at Augustana University in August 2015. She completed her Ph.D. in Special Education with an emphasis in autism spectrum disorders and applied behavior analysis from the University of Georgia in May 2015. She is a board certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D).

Kim Dobson has worked in the field of special education for 29 years. She has worked with students who have autism and/or cognitive impairments, worked as an Autism Team Leader, an educator on an autism team, an integration specialist, assistant professor in special education and is currently teaching in an elementary behavior program.

Rhonda Erickson is a certified Work Incentive Planning and Assistance Benefit Specialist for Black Hills Special Services Cooperative. She has been in the Human Service Field for 23 years with the last 6 of those years spent as a Benefits Specialist. Her interest in Social Security Disability benefits began while working as Vocational Director for a Community Support Provider agency and received notice of a LARGE overpayment due back to SSA. It was in this instance that she learned just how impossible security benefits were to understand. Rhonda is now proficient in the processes and documentation required by social security and will present simple, easy to understand information during her unquestionably fun session!

Vicki Kerkvliet is the Executive Director of Business Resource Network in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Vicki has a B.A. in religion with a minor in psychology from Augustana University. She has worked in the field of disabilities for 27 years striving for full inclusion of people with disabilities in employment, community living and all aspects of society. Vicki was born with the disease Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) and uses a wheelchair for mobility. Vicki is a member of South Dakota RehabACTion, the Sioux Empire Society for Human Resource Management, and the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of

Commerce. She serves on the South Dakota Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities Board and the USD Health Sciences Advisory Board. Vicki is a Peer Visitor for Independent Living Choices and plays flute at church and other community events. She was Ms. Wheelchair South Dakota in 1998. Vicki also received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Employee with a Disability in 2000.

Dr. Alex Kloth is a neurobiologist and Assistant Professor of Biology at Augustana University. He received his Ph.D. in 2014 from Princeton University, where he studied the function of the cerebellum in autism mouse models. Before starting at Augustana in Fall 2017, he did postdoctoral research on Angelman syndrome and Pitt-Hopkins syndrome at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Krystal Krull is a mother of a beautiful, happy, and strong-willed little girl (Nikole) who happens to have autism. When Nikole lost coverage for her ABA therapy at the start of 2019 after a year and a half of coverage, I was shocked and devastated. I quickly learned a lot about our current autism laws in South Dakota and realized things need to change. That is when I joined this fight. Since then, I have talked to many stakeholders in the Sioux Falls area with plans to better address autism-related needs in the community and organized what I hope will be an annual community event from now on, Autism Awareness in April and Always. I am excited for the positive changes that are before us and look forward to doing my part in making those changes happen.

Dr. Michelle Powers is an assistant professor, teaching special education and graduate education courses at Augustana University. She and her husband Pat are the parents of 7 children, ages 11-27. Their youngest daughter is on the autism spectrum. Michelle has advocated actively for reform in insurance coverage for ABA therapies in the state of South Dakota.

Elaine Roberts is a wife, mother and grandmother. Experiences include: Special Education Teacher, retired from Sioux Falls School District, past president of SDEA, former State Representative, and former Executive Director of South Dakota Parent Connection. She was one of the SDPC founding board members in 1985. Her work in special education began with her son long before there was a special education law. And... still learning every day about new technologies and ways to enhance the lives of children and families.

Brenda Smith has been involved in the disability field for over thirty years. She has a degree in Elementary/Special Education and is a Person-Centered Thinking Trainer. She currently provides training to direct support professionals, educators, families, and self-advocates. Brenda feels her greatest life teachings have come from her son, as well as from other individuals with disabilities and their families. She is passionate about helping families envision positive futures for their sons and daughters. Dr. Lisa Stanley’s journey with autism and advocacy began with her then four-year-old son’s diagnosis with autism in 2012. Through necessity, Lisa began advocating for autism insurance reform in South Dakota in late 2013. Lisa has been a registered lobbyist advocating for issues related to autism in SD. Lisa is the recipient of the Autism Speaks “Rookie of the Year” Advocacy Award in 2015 and the SD Center for Disabilities Outstanding Family Advocate Award in 2017. She has served on a state led work group for behavior analyst licensure, is a graduate of Partners in Policymaking and was appointed by the Governor to the ABA advisory committee under the South Dakota Board of Social Workers. She also serves on the Board of Directors for numerous groups including Disability Rights South Dakota, the Pierre Youth Orchestra and her local Rotary chapter.

Scott Swier is the law firm’s Founder, Managing Member and father of a child with autism. He also leads the law firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group and Education Law Practice Group. Scott is a highly sought-after author and speaker on legal and legislative topics for state agencies, constitutional offices, and professional organizations. Scott is an adjunct professor at the University of South Dakota School of Law where he teaches the popular “Education and Law” course. He is also the author of numerous legal publications on the topics of school law, estate planning, civil litigation, scientific evidence, and business law.

Darcy Weber is a parent of a child with autism, is a BCBA student at Arizona State University, and is employed at Behavior Care Specialists in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Megan Wiessner, MA, CCC-SLP has been a speech-language pathologist at LifeScape in Sioux Falls, SD for 13 years. As a member of the Autism Evaluation Team for 10 years, she has screened or evaluated over 1,000 children for autism. She has presented on topics related to autism and AAC at two ASHA national conventions and several locations across South Dakota. Megan specializes in developmental and behavioral intervention for preschool aged children with autism spectrum disorder.
