From The Pastor’s Desk After a busy summer of school and a busy two months getting caught up at the parish, I’m enjoying a week of vacation. I’ll be back in the office on Wednesday.

On Thursday, October 3, please join me at a presentation on the Eastern Catholic Churches. The goal of the presentation will be to broaden our understanding of what it means to be Catholic. The Roman Catholic Church is one of twenty-four Catholic Churches. The Roman Catholic Church is the only Western Church. The other twenty-three Catholic Churches are Eastern. Come and learn a bit more about these important churches. The talk will begin at 7:00 p.m., in the Community Room.

Next weekend, we will hold our annual Mission Appeal Weekend. As we did last year, the appeal will be made for the Archdiocese of Madurai, India. This is Father Britto’s home. Not only do we have the chance to support a worthy cause in India, we have a chance to support our very own Father Britto and express our gratitude to his Archbishop for sharing him with us. I thank you in advance for your generous support.

Today is the Feast of Ss. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, the Archangels. God, in his greatness, has given us the angels to watch over us. We do well to call upon their assistance. There is a tradition of praying the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel after Mass. It might be a nice thing to recover, especially in our challenging times. Please join me in praying this prayer frequently.

St. Michael the Archangel, Defend us in battle, Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, By the power of God, Thrust into hell Satan, And all the evil spirits Who prowl about the world Seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

-Fr. Aaron J. Esch

Retirement From Active Ministry I wanted to give our wonderful faith community notice that it is time for me to retire from active ministry. My covenant with the parish runs until December of this year.

In light of the fact that Fr. Aaron will be leaving on sabbatical at the same time (end of December), returning at the end of April, we have chosen the weekend of April 25/26, 2020, as the formal closure date. At those weekend liturgies, I will deacon at all Masses and preach. Please be aware that I will retain my diaconal faculties and still be able to do baptisms, funerals and witness mar-riages as requested. The reason I have chosen to retire is simply this…I will be 75 years old in October, and have been a deacon for 35+ years.

As I have advanced in years, my knees give out (sometimes without notice) and, from time to time, I miss a few things (memory issues). While this is a normal part of the aging process, I am making adjustments in my life to accommodate my comfort level. -Deacon Ted

A Word Of Thanks Thank you to the St. Alphonsus organizations who contributed to the parking lot improvement project! We have all benefited from the patching, resealing and repainting of the entire parish and school parking lots. And, let’s not forget the bright LED fixtures that have been installed in the church/school parking lot to help keep our facilities, parishioners, and guests safe in the eve-nings. The following organizations made it happen: 2019 Auction Donors who supported the Safe-ty 2.0 initiative, Athletics ($5,000), Home & School ($5,000), and Fish Fry ($10,000). Thank you all for coming together to support this important improvement to our parish campus. May God bless you abundantly! -Kathy Jaeckels, Director of Finance

Prayer For Peace Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Lover Of Nature Saint Francis was born in the town of Assisi in Italy, in 1182. At the age of 20, he devoted himself to a life of prayer. Three years later, Francis embraced a life of poverty and dedicated himself to God.

Francis was a lover of nature. He took long walks through the countryside and studied its plants and trees. Francis felt that all plants and animals were part of God’s kingdom.

Saint Francis is the founder of the Franciscan religious order. He is the patron saint of those who care for plants and animals.

His feast day is celebrated on October 4. Blessing of the Animals celebrations are held on October 4, the feast of Saint Francis, all over the United States. They are often held outdoors. A priest blesses each pet by praying a special prayer and sprinkling the pet with holy water.

A Stewardship Moment In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a warning about living selfishly in his parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. The Rich Man holds sumptuous feasts and dresses in fine clothes. But despite his afflu-ence, he does nothing to relieve the painful hunger and debilitating condition of his neighbor Lazarus. He neglects to love his neighbor as he loves himself and is sent to hell for his lifestyle and desire for self-gratification. The Rich Man represents those who spend their money on their own personal pleasures with no regard for sharing their material possessions with the poor and needy in their own neighborhood. Good stewards realize the practical implications of not only loving God, but loving their neighbor as they would love themselves. Who are the less fortunate in our neighborhood? Do we share a portion of our own blessings with them?

School Scene As a middle school reading teacher, I find that some people may be surprised to know that I still read aloud to my students. Why not? I have found that reading aloud even at this age brings great rewards and has been endorsed by many of the reading workshops that I have attended. My students often enter the room saying ”Mrs. Radish, are you read-ing to us today?” I wish adults could observe my room and see the expressions on my students' faces as I read to them. The room is completely silent, and they are as focused

as ever just waiting for the words of the story to unfold. I encourage parents to read aloud with their children as well. It is a wonderful activity that brings connections far beyond the book being read. As Author Mem Fox says, “You never outgrow being read to.” How true! -Maureen Radish/Catholic Educator

Mission Appeal For The Archdiocese Of

Madurai, Tamilnadu, India On behalf of my diocese, “Madurai Archdiocese,” I come to you for your kind and generous help for our missions in our Archdiocese in India. Our diocese will be grateful and thankful for any support and help you show toward this noble cause. In short, I will explain the need and purpose of the “Mission Appeal.” The purpose of this Mission Appeal is for the construction of the New Pastoral Centre Building. (Although we promoted and made the Mis-sion appeal last year for the same above project, we do it again this year because of the huge amount we are in need of to complete the project. The construction work is on its way.)

The Archdiocese of Madurai has a very long history. The Archdiocese of Madurai has its origin in Madurai Mission established by Fr. Robert De Nobi-li, SJ, the pioneer and foremost figure of inculturation, i.e., social and cultural adaptation of Christianity in 1606, and is closely associated with great mis-sionaries, like St. Francis Xavier, the Apostle of the East, St. John De Britto, a martyr, Fr. Constantine Beschi, SJ, a great missionary and master of Tam-il literature.

Madurai was made a diocese on January 8, 1938, and raised to an Archdio-cese on September 9, 1953. It covers an area with a population of 7,981,450. The Catholics are about 145,000. About 110 active diocesan priests are working in and outside of the diocese. We carry out various pas-toral and social ministries, including to the non-Christians through the dioce-san Pastoral Centre, which is the heart of our diocese. The Pastoral Centre regularly holds seminars and workshops for the personnel involved in edu-cational, health care and social work apostolates so that they are carried out in line with and contribute to the overall pastoral plan of the Archdiocese. Ministries relating to families, spirituality, faith formation of Catholics, cate-chetics, evangelization, ecumenism, inter-religious harmony and dialogue, youth formation, basic Christian communities, the imprisoned in jails, the substance and alcohol addicted are our main focus as well. All these minis-tries have their offices in the Pastoral Centre building, which was built in

1940, to be a printing press and later on it was converted to be the Pastoral Centre in 1970s. Due to lack of space to accommodate the increased num-ber of departments and offices, some of them are forced to function out of other buildings on the campus including the archbishop’s office.

The building that is currently accommodating the Pastoral Centre is in dilapi-dated condition, constructed almost 80 years ago and having used impover-ished construction materials to save cost. Also, the skills employed during the construction of the building were defective, and the supervision at times was minimal or left in the hands of unskilled foremen and have contributed to the fast deterioration of the building. The civil engineer was invited to inspect the building and gave his opinion that no repair and renovation is possible at this late stage and that the building had to be demolished and a new one put up in its place. So, as per the direction of the civil engineer, we have demolished the old building last August, and started the construction work.

A building of reasonable size and at the same time functional, in contrast to the present one, is the need of the hour to accommodate the Pastoral Cen-tre and the offices of various diocesan commissions to carry out their func-tions. The proposed construction of the Pastoral Centre will be a stand-ing edifice to the generosity of all those concerned, including that of those contributing to the project for its implementation. On behalf of my diocese, I request your support with prayers to the Lord who is the prolific giver of all that is good.

I am planning to explain this project in detail, as I preach at all the Masses on the weekend of October 5/6, 2019.

My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glori-ous riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)

The Gift Of Our Guardian Angels It’s good to know we’re not alone. This October 2, we celebrate the feast of our guardian angels. This ancient belief has roots in Scripture. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus implies the special guiding care of the angels. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father” (Matthew 18:10). Our guardian angels are given to us by God to protect and watch over us from the moment of our conception until the hour of death. Let’s pray together to our own heavenly help: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side to light, to guard, to rule, and to guide. Amen. ©LPi

Prayers To The Archangels St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O prince of the heav-enly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

Blessed Saint Gabriel, Archangel We beseech you to intercede for us at the throne of di-vine mercy: As you announced the mystery of the Incarnation to Mary, so through your pray-ers may we receive strength of faith and courage of spirit, and thus find favor with God and redemption through Christ Our Lord. May we sing the praise of God our Savior with the an-gels and saints in heaven forever and ever. Amen.

Blessed Saint Raphael, Archangel, We beseech you to help us in all our needs and trials of this life, as you, through the power of God, didst restore sight and gave guidance to young Tobit. We humbly seek your aid and intercession, that our souls may be healed, our bodies protected from all ills, and that through divine grace we may become fit to dwell in the eternal Glory of God in heaven. Amen.

Greendale Veterans

Memorial Dedication Honor and remember our Veterans. The Greendale Veterans Memorial Dedication ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., on the corner of Broad Street and Southway.

Question Of The Week Theme: God cares for the poor and the op-pressed, and we should too! Question for Youth: The Gospel story tells us that we are judged by what we do or don’t do for the poor and needy. How are you cur-rently reaching out to those in need? What more could you do? Question for Adults: What choices can you or have you made to balance your own life with those who are homeless, poor and in need of assistance for daily living? How does this Gospel reading inform you about that?

Thursday, October 3, 7:00-8:30 p.m. “The Catholic Church: A Communion of Churches” with Rev. Aaron J. Esch, Community Room How well do we know the Catholic Church? When we speak of the Catholic Church, we often are speaking only of the Roman Catholic Church. However, the Roman Catholic Church is only one of the twenty-four Catholic Churches. The other 23 are fully Catho-lic: the Eastern Catholic Churches. This session will present an introduction to these Churches. Hopefully, we’ll broaden our perspectives and gain a deeper appreciation for the various rich traditions that comprise our Catholic Faith.

Father Aaron Esch, St. Alphonsus’ Pastor, holds a Licentiate of Sacred Theology from Gregorian Uni-versity, Rome.

To register, call 421-2442 x 225. No Fee.

Thursday, October 10, 7:00-8:30 p.m. “Your Chief Duty and Supreme Dignity: Living Out the Baptismal Priesthood”

with Michael Brummond, S.T.D. Community Room

Through baptism, each member of the lay faithful shares in the one priesthood of Je-sus Christ. God has made his new people, “a kingdom of priests to God the Fa-ther” (Rev.1:6), called to “offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 2:5). Come to explore how we live out our baptismal priesthood both at Mass and in our daily lives.

Doctor Mike Brummond is Assistant Professor of Systematic Studies at Sacred Heart Seminary/ST in Hales Corners.

To register, call 421-2442 x 225. Freewill offering.
