3rd Sunday of Lent The Prodigal Son Our story begins with the younger son demanding his inheritance, meaning he wished his father dead, since no gets an inheritance until the parents have passed away. The father surprisingly agrees without objecting, nor does the elder sonoppose. So off goes this boy and wasted his entirefortune. Only when he is in the dumps does heconsider returning home. Now the big question is: atwhat stage do you think the son repented? While in thepig sty the boy came to the senses and rehearsed whathe would say to his father, "I will go back to my fatherand say to him, 'Father I have sinned against God andbefore you. I no longer deserve to be called your son.Treat me then as one of your hired servants.'" Youmight think this is when the son repented. However hiswords seem programmed and lack emotion. So henwhen does he repent? When he approaches the housestill in certain of what to expect, he is greeted by adeeply moved father who 'threw hi arms around hisneck and kissed him. The son said. "Father I havesinned against God and before you. I no longerdeserve to be called your son..." The son neverfinished his well-rehearsed speech. Why? It is at thatmoment that he has broken down in tears. It is thefather's unexpected generous love that made the sonrealize the misery of his own life. What he did confessthough was enough: he was a sinner and he didn't liveup to being a son. We too have been called God'schildren and we can never be anything less. Then wehave the elder son who refuses to go home. He is likethe farmer who was given three wishes by God on thecondition that his neighbor receives double. So his firstwish was for a thousand acres of the best land andthere it was before his eyes. Overjoyed he ran to hisneighbor only to find that his neighbors had been giventwo thousand acres. He next wished for a thousandfine cattle. Again overjoyed he went to tell his neighborwho had been given two thousand fine cattle. Finallyfor his last wish he asked to be blind in one eye..Godcried. Are we like the elder son who has much but isnever satisfied? Do we want mercy for ourselves andjudgement for our brothers and sisters?

Pope Explains Why Humans Should Rejoice Says We Are Dust That Is Loved by GodSays We Are Dust That Is Loved by God

ROME, FEB. 18, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Human beings are fragile creatures destined to return to the earth -- dust, yes, but dust that is loved and molded by the love of God, Benedict XVI says. The Pope made this reflection Wednesday from the Basilica of Santa Sabina, where he celebrated a Mass for Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Like the other members of the congregation, the Holy Father had ashes placed on his head, according to the traditional rite. The imposition of ashes, he said, is essentially "a gesture of humility that means: I recognize myself for what I am, a fragile creature made of earth and destined to return to the earth, but also made in the image of God and destined to return to him. Dust, yes, but dust that is loved and moldedby his love, animated by his life-giving breath, capable of recognizing his voice and responding to him; freeand thus also capable of disobeying him, of yielding to the temptation of pride and self-sufficiency."Cardinal Jozef Tomko, 85, retired prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, placed theashes on the Pontiff. The cardinal is the titular bishop of the basilica. The Holy Father, in turn, imposed asheson numerous cardinals, among whom were his secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone; the vicar ofRome, Cardinal Agostino Vallini; and the former vicar of Rome, Cardinal Camillo Ruini. Before the celebration,Benedict XVI had presided over the traditional penitential procession from the church of St. Anselm on theAventine Hill to the Basilica of Santa Sabina.

Praying Lent This YearPraying Lent This Year

Lent offers us all a very special time to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment toa way of life, rooted in our baptism. Inour busy world, Lent provides us withan opportunity to reflect upon ourpatterns, to pray more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've doneand failed to do, and to be generous tothose in need. For centuries, the Liturgyof the Hours and the Eucharist haveguided our Lenten reflection. Readingthe Holy Bible and praying the Rosarytogether as a family will be a greatpreparation for Holy Week and Easter.May Our Lord grant us all the graces weneed and desire in this time of grace.

"ALL THE KINGSTHROUGHOUT HISTORY

SENT THEIR PEOPLE OUTTO DIE FOR THEM

BUT THERE IS ONLYONE KING

WHO SAID I WILL DIEFOR MY PEOPLE...

OUR ONLY KING JESUS!"

As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a young woman ahead of himpicking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the youth, heasked her why she was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die ifleft to the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish”countered the old man. “how can your effort make a difference?” The young woman looked

at the starfish in her hand and threw it safely in the waves“It makes a difference to this one,” she said.

Prayer with Saint SharbelSaint Sharbel, I trust you a lot and ask of you to accompany

me in my daily life thus becoming my patron ,and my closest friend which I turn to in every decision I

make. And who helps me live always near God and with him.Bless me and bless my family, friends and contacts.

Teach me to surrender myself to God’s will always, thusaccepting with joy, life’s hardships because

He is the essence of utmost love and eternal life on thisearth and the after life.

Saint Sharbel, Stay with me. Amen.

A couple of months later, in January 1993, another incident occurred, this timein Lebanon, with 59-year-old Nouhad El-Chami in the main role. Nouhad,a mother of 12 children, suddenly became paralyzed as a result of a narrowingof arteries in a very advanced stage. On 21 January 1993 Nouhad had a"dream". Two monks came towards my bed. One of them, St Charbel, camenearer, uncovered my neck, put his hand on it and said: I have come to operateon you. I turned my head to see his face, but I couldn't, because the light comingfrom his body and eyes was too blinding and powerful. I was so confused, andasked him:” Father, why do you want to operate on me? The doctor didn't say Ineed an operation.” But St Charbel said:” Definitely, you need an operation, andI, Father Charbel, have come to do it for you.” I looked towards the statue of the Virgin, placed near me,and said:” Holy Mary, please help me; how are these monks going to operate without anesthetics orsutures ?” Then I realized that the Virgin's statue was standing between the monks. Suddenly, I felt aterrible pain under Charbel's fingers, which were rubbing my neck. When St Charbel finished theoperation, the other monk approached, put me in a sitting position, and placed a pillow behind my back.He reached for a glass of water, put his hand behind my head and said:” Drink this water.”” I cannotdrink without a straw”, I said. He replied: “We have operated on you, and now you will drink this water;then you will stand up and walk.”I woke up and felt water running down my throat, and found myself sitting in the same position as theFather had placed me in. Suddenly I felt a burning in my neck, and unconsciously put my hand there, tofind out what was happening. Then I realized that my paralyzed hand had become normal again; I feltmy [paralyzed] foot moving normally under the blanket. I got out of bed in a semi-conscious state andknelt before the picture of St Charbel and the statue of the Virgin, to thank them. I went to the bathroomand looked in the mirror; I saw two wounds of twelve centimeters each, at both sides of my neck. I wentto my husband's bedroom and turned on the light. My husband looked at me and shouted:” Woman! How did you get here alone? Now you'll stumble and fall and a new catastrophe will be added uponanother!” I raised my paralyzed hand and told him: "Have no fear, St Charbel operated on me, and now Ican walk." This story, described in a second booklet published by the Monastery in which Charbel lived, has a follow-up to it: after another dream, in which Charbel appeared to her, Nouhad discovered thatthere was oil flowing from a portrait of the Saint. This has continued up to the present moment, as ourcolleague in Lebanon, Nabil Matraji, was able to verify for himself: "It is an amazing sight," he said. However, it is not only Charbel's portrait in Nouhad's home which oozes healing oil. The samephenomenon is happening with oil flowing from the portrait of a fourth century saint the founder of theMaronite Order, St Maroun (given in the English and American reference books as St. Maroun) afterwhom the order was named. The same Maroun, Nouhad learned in a later dream, was the secondmonk who had helped in the operation which cured her.
