7th Sunday of the Holy Cross

Sunday of Christ the King)

Reading: Romans 2:9-21

Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46

“Come, you who are blessed by My Father; take your

inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the

creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me

something to eat, … I tell you the truth, whatever you did

for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did it for

Me.” (Matthew 25:34, 40)

God will judge us in accordance with our reaction to human

need. His judgment does not depend on the knowledge we

have amassed, but on the help that we have given, and the

help which we must give. It is a case of giving help to the

people we meet everyday for giving a hungry man a meal,

or a thirsty man a drink, welcoming a stranger, cheering the

sick, visiting the prisoner. These are things which anyone

can do.

It must be help which is an uncalculated reaction of a loving

heart. It is still true that there are those who will help if they

are given praise, thanks and publicity, the help which wins

the approval of God is that which is given only with the aim

of helping a fellowman.

Jesus confronts us with the wonderful truth that all such

help given is given to Himself. If we help a friend in need,

we will know the joy of helping Jesus Christ Himself.

NEWS & VIEWS FROM OUR SPIRITUAL LEADERS

Pope canonizes 7 new saints,

including 2 from North America

His Beattitude Patriarch

Bechara Peter El Rai Maronite Visit to India

Pope Benedict XVI presided at the canonization of 7 new

saints—including St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St. Marianne

Cope—at a Mass celebrated for a congregation of 80,000

people in St. Peter’s Square on October 21.

Along with St. Kateri, the first Native American saint; and

St. Marianne, who worked with lepers at Molokai, the Pope

also canonized:

St. Jacques Berthiue (1838-1896), a French Jesuit martyr;

St. Pedro Calungsod (1654-1672), a Filipino lay catechist

and martyr;

St. Giovanni Battista Piamarta (1841-1913), an Italian

priest;

St. Maria del Carmen (1848-1911), born Maria Salles y

Baranguera, a Spanish religious; and

St. Anna Schaeffer (1882-1925), a German laywoman.

In his homily the Pope pointed out that by ―happy

coincidence‖ the canonizations took place on World Mission

Sunday, as the Church reflects on ―how to be evangelizers,

called to bear witness and to proclaim the Christian

message.‖ The 7 new saints answered that challenge in their

own different ways, the Pontiff observed. ―They are sons

and daughters of the Church who chose a life of service

following the Lord.‖

The witness of these newly canonized saints, the Pope

continued, is ―an eloquent confirmation of the mysterious

saving reality‖ that springs from the Church. Noting how

frequently participants in the Synod of Bishops have

mentioned the need for personal holiness as a prerequisite for

effective evangelization, the Holy Father said that this

observation is ―true both for the mission ad gentes and for

the new evangelization in places with ancient Christian

roots.‖

The unprecedented canonization of two North American

saints in a single day drew thousands of Americans to Rome

for the October 21 ceremonies. ―This is a great weekend for

America in the Vatican,‖ observed Greg Burke, the Vatican’s

communications adviser.

"These new saints, different in

origin, language, nationality and

social condition, are united

among themselves and with the

whole People of God in the

mystery of salvation of Christ the

Redeemer,‖ the Pope said. He

urged all of the faithful to imitate

their example, ―configuring

ourselves to Christ.‖

Patriarch of Lebanese Maronite Syrian Church, Bechara

Boutros al-Rai, who is on a four-day visit to Kerala, on

Thursday attended a special mass at the St Peter’s Cathedral

of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church.

The Patriarch, who arrived on Wednesday, would be the chief

guest tomorrow at the 82nd anniversary of the ―Reunion‖

movement, which marked the joining of a section of Malankara

Orthodox Church followers to the Catholic fold, leading to the

formation of Syro Malankara Catholic Church.

The spiritual head of over 3.5 million adherents of Maronite

Church, Patriarch al-Rai was given a warm reception by senior

bishops, clergy, religious and laity of the Malankara church on his

arrival here.

October 11th is the day designated by our Holy

Father Benedict XVI to begin the celebration of

the “Year of Faith” for 2012-2013.

My hope and prayer that each one of us look into

our own hearts and ask ourselves if we are doing

all we can to increase our own faith

Do we take time for our daily Mass? Do we

spend time in daily prayer? Do we prepare

ourselves to be the Evangelist of today and to

proclaim Christ for our people?

O Lord,

may everything we do begin with

your inspiration,

continue with your help

and reach perfection under your

guidance. Amen

Year of Faith: Oct. 11, 2012-Nov. 24, 2013

In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that God has

opened the door of faith for the early Church. But did

you know that God has opened the door of faith for each

one of us and he invites us to step through the threshold

into a deeper relationship with him. The upcoming Year

of Faith is an opportunity for every Catholic to turn

towards Jesus Christ, encounter Him in the Sacraments,

especially the Eucharist and rediscover the Faith and

Church.

With his Apostolic Letter of October 11, 2011, Porta

Fidei. . . , Pope Benedict XVI declared that a "Year of

Faith" will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on

November 24, 2013. October 11, 2012, the first day of

the Year of Faith, is the fiftieth anniversary of the

opening of the Second Vatican Council. . . (Vatican II)

and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of

the Catholic Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics

are asked to study and reflect on the documents of

Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen

their knowledge of the faith.

"…They called the church together and reported what God had done with them

and how he had opened the door of faith..."(Acts 14:27).

"The 'door of faith' (Acts14:27) is always open for us,

ushering us into the life of communion with God and

offering entry into his Church."---Pope Benedict XVI,

Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei for the Indiction of the Year

of Faith.

The upcoming Year of Faith is a ―summons to an

authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One

Savior of the world‖ (Porta Fidei 6). In other words, the

Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to

experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter

into a deeper relationship with him. The ―door of faith‖

is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics

are called to open it again, walk through it and

rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and

his Church.

On these pages you will find videos and links to a

variety of resources to help you renew you baptismal call

by living out the everyday moments of their lives with

faith, hope and love.

THOUGHTS TO PONDER The Power of Attitude

Earl Nightingale :"You become what you think about. Negative thoughts reap negative results. If you think

positive thoughts, you will get positive results.“

What most people fail to realize is that your attitude not only impacts your happiness and your success, it also

can impact the happiness and success of all the people around you...your family, your friends, and your peers

at work. Attitudes truly are contagious, and from time to time we need to ask ourselves..."is mine worth

catching?“

It's my hope that this book will be a useful tool in helping you:

• Manage your energy levels

• Keep your soul alive

• Take new paths

• Reduce stress

• Develop the "Human Touch"

• Attack your fears

• Live in awe

• Savor small successes

• Burn brightly without burning out

• Hang on when the storms blow through

OUR FILIPINO COMMUNITY NEWS Blessed Peter (Pedro) Calungsod ROME, OCT. 16, 2012 (Zenit.org).- On Oct. 21, Pope Benedict XVI will

canonize Blessed Pedro Calungsod who gave his life for the faith on April

2, 1672, in Guam.

Calungsod was a Filipino lay catechist born in 1654 and was doing a

missionary work in Guam. Blessed John Paul II beatified him on March 5,

2000.

He died trying to protect his mentor, Jesuit Father Diego Jose Luis San

Vitores, a missionary who was killed. Two Chamorro chiefs pursued the

missionaries when they learned Father San Vitores had baptized a chief's

daughter without his consent.

Calungsod, a native of Cebu province in the Philippines, "was the first to

be attacked in the assault," explained Msgr. Ildebrando Leyson of the

Cebu Archdiocese. "And they marveled how he was so skillful in evading

the darts of the spears ... until finally he was hit in the chest. He fell and

the other assassin split his skull."

He will be the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz.

To mark the event of his canonization the Church in the Philippines will

undertake a nine-year spiritual program, starting on the date of

Calungsod’s canonization, and lasting until March 2021.

Prishes, youth organizations and religious groups will hold activities

during the canonization day of Blessed Pedro Calungsod on October 21,

according to news posted on the Web site of the Bishops’ Conference of

the Philippines.

In the Archdiocese of Manila people, particularly the young, will gather at

the St. Niño de Tondo Parish for a program on the canonization of Pedro

Calungsod which will be held from 2:30-7:00 p.m. followed by a youth

mass at 8:00 o’clock in the evening.

Another group will also organize an event titled ―San Pedro 10.21‖ at the San

Juan Arena in San Juan City from 1:30-6:00 p.m. bringing the canonization rite

in Rome to the Philippines via satellite feed in real time.

Meanwhile in Cebu, the Commission on Youth of the Archdiocese of Cebu and

the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City, together with the city

administration, are inviting people to watch a live telecast of the canonization.

―From his childhood, Pedro Calungsod declared himself unwaveringly for

Christ and responded generously to his call,‖ said Pope John Paul II in his

homily when he beatified Calungsod and others on March 5, 2000.

―Young people today can draw encouragement and strength from the example

of Pedro, whose love of Jesus inspired him to devote his teenage years to

teaching the faith as a lay catechist,‖ John Paul II said.

In a spirit of faith, marked by strong Eucharistic and Marian devotion, Pedro

undertook the demanding work asked of him and bravely faced the many

obstacles and difficulties he met,‖ the pope added.

Today he intercedes for the young, in particular those of his native Philippines,

and he challenges them, John Paul II commented. ―Young friends, do not

hesitate to follow the example of Pedro, who "pleased God and was loved by

him" (Wis 4: 10) and who, having come to perfection in so short a time, lived a

full life (cf. ibid., v. 13).‖

MIRACLES OF SAINT SHARBEL Thank you Abouna and may you also be blessed to overflowing. I

wanted to share a miracle that happened after reading the Saint

Sharbel article that you had in your August issue.

I had prayed to Saint Sharbel in our church a couple of months ago for

Luc’s sisters little girl who had a hole in her eardrum and this was

going to require surgery if it didn’t close. I asked Saint Sharbel to

heal this for Alexandra through his intercession and I mentioned it to

Luc’s sister (Natalie). She was also praying for a miracle. After this

she went to the doctor and they still reported the hole.

Then you send me the August newsletter which I only got to read

yesterday. I was so touched to tears when I read the article that I felt

like I had to re-ask Saint Sharbel again for a healing. I forwarded the

article to Natalie and asked her to pray too. I didn’t know that Natalie

was due to take Alexandra to the doctor that day. The doctor looked

into Alexandra’s ear and said that she can see that Alexandra had had

many ear infections in her time and that there was scar tissue

there. Natalie said that the doctor should be able to see a hole as this

was always clearly visible. The doctor confirmed that there is no

longer a hole in her ear. We are so delighted at this very special

intercession of Saint Sharbel and we give God all the glory for this

healing. I’m sure that Natalie will take Alexandra to an ear specialist

to obtain his opinion but in the meantime we keep thanking Jesus for

this precious healing. It is amazing that He uses His sinful children to

ask for these miracles and then He listens and answers us through His

mercy – it takes my breath away.

Healing of Marie-Berthe

Abi Rached

In May 2004, Marie-Berthe suffered from a

headache. She went to the hospital and the

medical tests revealed that she had a 15 cm-

tumor. She underwent a surgery and the

surgeon extracted 4% from the external

tumor but he couldn’t injure the brain. She

prayed deeply saint Charbel asking him to

heal her. He appeared to her and said: ―I

chose you among many‖.

Later on, she underwent a test and found out

that the tumor was gone.

She visited the tomb of saint Charbel and got

her healing registered on February 14, 2011.
