Morning Routines (8:45-9:10)

Your child is responsible for getting ready each morning! Turn in any notes and homework to the teacher.

Put daily folder, backpack away.

Sharpen 2 or more pencils.

Check book basket.

Use the restroom/ Get water.

Organize desk.

Go to the media center.

Science & Social Studies We alternate units so that we are teaching either science

or social studies.

4 Science units will be: Solids and Liquids, Weather, Sound, and Life Cycles.

4 Social studies units will include: Civics and Governance, History and Culture, Economics, and Geography.

Specials

Our specials are PE, art, music, media, technology, science, and guidance.

On PE days, please send your child dressed appropriately for active play (tennis shoes).

Even though media is a special, your child can go and check out books at any time. They may check out as many as they can be responsible for.

Literacy Block (Daily CAFÉ) (before and after lunch)

3 mini lessons: focus on reading comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary.

After each mini lesson, I work with students in guided reading, strategy groups, individual conferences/goal setting, and assessments (new state M-Class tests this year).

If you eat outside, you may only take your child.

If your child wants to invite one friend, you may sit at an empty table in the cafeteria.

Please do not share food with other children.

Please make sure your child’s lunch account is kept up to date. You can pay by check or online (https://mylunchmoney.com/). If a child doesn’t have money in the account they may have fruits and veggies.

Writing The writing process involves creating plans using thinking

maps, writing drafts, editing, and revising.

We work in 3 genres, each with a specific rubric (narrative, informational, opinion).

Students create pieces including:

Personal narratives

Realistic Fiction

Opinion Writing/Reviews

Fairy Tale Adaptations

Non-fiction (All About) writing

Short reports

Math

We are using Math Expressions along with Wake County Alignment lessons.

Topics include: place value, addition and subtraction (3 digit), money, time, geometry, fractions, measurement, and data.

Students need to explain their reasoning and problem solving verbally (math talk), with drawings, and with written explanations.

Help your child practice math addition and subtraction facts at home to develop fluency (www. xtramath.org, flash cards, etc.)

Students may monitor their own growth over time by using graphs and charting their fact fluency scores.

Recess

On hot days, please send in a water bottle.

We would love donations of playground balls, jump ropes, and Frisbees.

Students are responsible for keeping up with items that are brought from home. Please monitor what your child brings (we have had items lost or damaged in the past).

Snack (during recess) Please send in one nutritious snack and drink if desired.

Please be aware that we have students with allergies. Students are NEVER allowed to share food.

Birthday Snacks: We will be doing a monthly birthday celebration (at recess time). The homeroom parent will coordinate with the parents who have children with birthdays in each month.

**ALSO, we are not allowed to send home party invitations. There will be a PTA directory for mailing purposes.**

Team Time Team Time will be a time when we focus on

specific math and literacy skills in a differentiated learning environment.

Team Time will begin 2nd quarter.

All 2nd grade teachers participate in team time.

Homework (Monday-Thursday)

Read 10-15 minutes each day.

Math (a practice page from that day’s lesson or activities from a website such as Study Island or xtramath.com)

Word Work (Words Their Way Activities): Students were given a spelling inventory to determine their current levels. Word work activities at home and school are differentiated based on these levels. Spelling checks are every Friday.

Homework is for practice and the benefit of your child. Homework will never be graded, but is important for adequate review of a skill!

Responsibility

Students are responsible for turning in all notes, paperwork, lunch money, etc. during their morning routine!

Students are responsible for completing homework and returning it to school each day.

Students are responsible for packing up (homework, daily folder, lunch box, etc.) at the end of each day.

Communication [email protected]

Email is the best communication tool!

I will check my email before school (9:10) and after school (4:15). I try to check email during my planning period, but some days I am unable to. Please send emails before 9:15 if you need me to see them that day- otherwise there is a chance I will not read them until 4:15!

I will respond ASAP.

If you don’t hear from me within 24 hours, please resend your email or send a printed copy with your child. I might not have received it!

Communication Continued

Students are responsible for giving all notes/papers to the teacher. Please be sure to send a note in the daily folder after your child has been absent.

Friday Folders will be sent home each week. Please review and return the folder on Monday!

Data Envelopes will be sent on weeks when common 2nd grade assessments have been given. Please sign and return the assessments in the envelope on Monday.

A class newsletter will be sent via e-mail every two weeks and posted on the website.

A calendar will also be posted on the website and e-mailed each month. Please print a copy and put in your child’s daily folder.

Conferences We will have 2 official conferences

this year.

The first conference will be student led.

The second will be a parent-teacher conference.

Report Cards and Interim Reports We have a new electronic grade book

(PowerSchools). Proficiency levels will be 1, 2, 3, 4 (higher level, independent thinking). There will no longer be a 3*.

September 27, December 20, March 28, June 27
