Pastor
Dear Friends,
The Fourth Sunday after Easter is known as “Good Shepherd Sunday” because the gospel reading is
always taken from one of Jesus’ teachings about being a loving and caring shepherd. In today’s
passage Jesus emphasizes his willingness to lay down his life for his sheep, to sacrifice himself in
order to protect his sheep and to ensure their well-being. Such heroic words anticipate his coming
death and resurrection and his willingness to do that for all, including some who are not yet part of
his flock. Even though shepherding is not a familiar career for most of us, the image and solicitude
for the sheep do not need a lot of interpretation. Religious artists down through the centuries have
translated them into familiar and inspirational paintings, mosaics and sculptures.
“Pastor” is the Latin (and Spanish) word for shepherd and so all the connotations of good shepherd-
ing are expressed in the word “pastoral”. We have “Pastoral Councils” in parishes, “Pastoral Care”
departments in hospitals, “Pastoral Leadership” programs for laity and clergy, and “Pastoral Migrato-
ria” programs for immigrants and refugees. Oh yes, we have “pastors” and “associate pastors” in
parishes too. Qualities of care and service are implied in those words, even if the roles also require
ministerial and other administrative skills as well. It is no surprise that one focus on this Sunday after
Easter has always been vocations, calling and inviting young people to consider possible vocations
to priesthood, the diaconate or vowed religious life. It is a well-known fact that our Church needs
many more people to step forward to embrace those vocations and to dedicate their talents and en-
ergy to the service of God’s people. But the word “vocation” applies to other calls as well and
“shepherding” is a role exercised by parents, teachers, nurses, doctors, counselors, therapists, public
officials, firefighters, police officers, social workers, and those who dedicate themselves to the care
and service of others. Our family life and our society could not function without “good shepherds” of
many kinds.
When I was eighteen years old I left home to explore a possible vocation with the Viatorians as a
priest and a high school teacher. I was pretty sure that I did not want to be a parish pastor and so I
did not choose the diocesan priesthood. Funny how things change, isn’t it? I wonder how many
young people choose their marriage partners for certain reasons and then find themselves loving
their spouse for a whole different set of reasons years later. “Shepherding” each other (and future
families) was probably not high on the original list of criteria. People called to the single life often
make some of the best “shepherds” because their energies are more outwardly focused and grand-
parents usually find “shepherding” to be a joyful second career. Wherever you are in your life this
Sunday, think about the qualities you look for in a “good” shepherd - and pray for those virtues in
yourself.

Queridos Amigos,
Me
"Pastorear" unos a

~JOHN 10:14-16
When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants !om you? How do you listen for His response? Usually, the answer is in “quiet whispers”, so take time ever" day, in silence, to actively listen for His response.
