More information about how to register for racing will be in the next issue of OTW.

We had a great t ime in the BVIs back in Jan 2017 ? it seems so long ago!!
And now we are thinking about the Cold Winter of 2018 and have decided to try out our favorite cruising grounds of St. Vincent & the Grenadines. This cruising area is a port ion of ?The Windward Islands.? It definitely will include the beautiful Tobago Cays; which many sailors consider the most beaut iful anchorage in the Caribbean.
If you would like to know more or are interested please send me an e-mail [email protected] or call (401) 575-6493 and I will put you on the mailing list .

Frostbit ing: It?s not your father?s Sea Dog
by Barbara DawsonBefore the Wickford Yacht Club was established, a frostbit ing group called the ?Windingers? was act ive in Wickford Harbor, sailing from Fales dock (now WYC). Most of these hardy souls became early members of the WYC. Rollin Whyte, Bill Sabo, Al Henry, Ken Paine, John Heard, John Gidley, Ralph Vale, Paul Sollit to, Bruce Dawson, Ron Loring and Bud Nannig were among those who sailed every Sunday from November to April. Some winters as many as 25 Sea Dogs have sailed on Sunday afternoon.
Each New Years Day a special ?Hangover Bowl? has been held with its own trophy and prest ige. A highlight of the season is the Sea Dog Worlds, an annual
competit ion between the Wickford and Sachem?s Head Fleet from Guilford, CT. In the days before inflatable dinghies, many Sea Dogs served as tenders on yacht club cruises which led to informal harbor racing.
Start ing as a simple sailing version of a rather heavy and t ippy rowing dinghy, the Sea Dog has evolved with considerable input from the racers into a more ?high performance? , self-rescuing model with finely faired bottoms and blades, more rigging adjustments and North sails. You could buy one in 1970 for $435 as a kit . Today it will cost you $4,000 to get a new one all up! The molds are now owned by Wickford Frostbiters and Jibe Tech in Portsmouth is the builder.
Second generat ion club members and others have joined in, and the fleet typically turns out about 19 hardy sailors. Frostbit ing has been the first associat ion with WYC for many sailors who have gone on to become club members. Peter Greene has been a constant star, and is st ill winning and championing improvements in the boats today.

Right : Compare the 2017 self-rescuing Sea Dog with a modern seat configurat ion with
the 1970 model. Quite an improvement !
The following are excerpts from Fidelia Reed Heard's Journal during a t rip from Boston to Melbourne, August 13, 1853 to December 17, 1854.
Fidelia was the great Grandmother of Wickford Yacht Club's second Commodore, John Heard. Thank you to Louise Heard for the story!
