If God knows we’re going to keep sinning why does He keep forgiving us?◦ Answer: Love, Mercy, and Grace


God’s Love, Grace, & Mercy◦ 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions

and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. People seem to generally know what Love is ◦ (See 1 Cor. 13:4-7; God is Love – 1 John 4:16)

But “Grace” and “Mercy” are thrown around

What is Mercy? ◦ Answer: Forbearance or kindness shown to

an offender

◦ (some define it as not getting what you deserve)


What is Mercy? ◦ Example:

You have a college scholarship. If you fail a class you lose it… and you can’t afford to lose it. Yet you slack off anyway and fail.

Realizing your error, you see the Dean & beg to keep your scholarship, assuring him you won’t fail again.

The Dean knows you deserve to have it taken away but shows you MERCY, allowing you to keep it and letting you off with a warning.


What is Grace? ◦ Answer: ?


What is Grace?◦ Answer: Showing kindness through undeserved

gifts or favor

◦ (some define it as getting what you don’t deserve)


What is Grace?◦ Example:

You clean your act up in school and just barely graduate. You go to the Dean that showed you mercy and ask for another favor; a job reference.

The Dean sees you’re not qualified, but pleased with your efforts he shows you GRACE by doing even more: Freely giving you an easy going career with a 6-figure

salary, that provides free housing & forgives all your debts


God forgives us (even if He knows we’ll sin again) because He’s merciful toward us.

He showed us so through the loving, gracious sacrifice of His only Son Jesus the Christ!


1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1-2

God punishes those who live in sin (Heb. 10:26)& forgives believers who slip in sin (1 John 2:1)


There’s an astronomically high probability that we will sin again, yes

Yet, as long as we:◦ Don’t mock God, using (the cross as) an excuse

to sin◦ Do have a relationship with Christ, and ◦ Do strive to live holy & righteously in God’s

sight

God will continue to forgive us through Christ because He is so gracious, loving, & merciful.
