The Open Hand Monument happens to be the most
iconic symbol of Chandigarh. In the words of Le
Corbusier, it connotes the city’s motto - ‘Open to
give, open to receive’. It is perhaps apt that only 15
km from this landmark, in a state-of-the-art campus
at Mohali, the Indian School of Business will be
opening its doors to thousands of students and their
aspirations.
This booklet is compiled to serve as a ready reckoner
for you as you join the ISB family at Mohali. As
you browse through these pages, you will realise
that an exciting lifestyle awaits you in the Tricity of
Chandigarh, Mohali and Punchkula. Welcome to
ISB’s Mohali campus.
Chandigarh - The Story ofThree CitiesThe most striking thing about the city is the expanse
of resplendent blue sky with the mountains in the
backdrop. When you are approaching the city, you
would see the jagged skyline of the Shivalik Hills
looming large over the city and the faint image of
an old temple dedicated to Goddess Chandi, from
whom the city got its name.
Chandigarh may appear oddly familiar to Western
visitors and idiosyncratic to the rest of India. The
city is aptly branded ‘City Beautiful’ with its tree
lined roads, big and beautiful roundabouts, parks,
shopping areas and renowned Capitol complex for
its architecture. The city tops the list of Indian States
and Union Territories with the highest per capita
income in the country at Rs. 99,262 at current prices
and ranks highest on Human Development Index. It
has the maximum number of vehicles per capita (2:1)
in the country. Yet thanks to wide, well maintained
roads and ample car parking, traffic is relatively
smooth. You can get to most places within the Tricity
within a half hour drive. Chandigarh is a very safe city.
With the lowest crime rates in the country you can
feel safe at any hour.
Mohali and Panchkula are Chandigarh’s 2 satellite
towns and they are together called the Tricity.
While Mohali is an extension of Chandigarh
into Punjab, Panchkula falls within the state of
Haryana. Chandigarh is a Union Territory and is
the administrative capital for both the neighbouring
states.
After the partition, Punjab became a state without
a capital with Lahore going to Pakistan. Shimla
in Himachal Pradesh, served as its temporary
secretariat. The political leadership decided on the
construction of a modern and accessible capital. This
was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s Dream City of modern
India - Chandigarh, the first planned city of India.
The responsibility for the design was given to the
French architect, Le Corbusier. With the help of his
cousin Pierre Jeanneret, and that of the English
couple Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew (along with a
number of Indian architects including Chief planner
Narinder S. Lamba and Chief Engineer J.C. Verma)
Chandigarh came into existence at the foothills of the
Shivaliks in 1953.
The Master Plan of ChandigarhLe Corbusier conceived the master plan of
Chandigarh to be analogous to the human body,
with a clearly defined head (the Capitol Complex),
the heart (City Centre), the lungs (the leisure valley,
innumerable open spaces and sector greens), the
intellect (the cultural and educational institutions), the
circulatory system (the network of roads, the 7Vs)
and the viscera (the industrial area). The concept
of the city is based on four major functions: living,
working, care of the body and spirit, and circulation.
Residential sectors constitute the living part whereas
the Capitol Complex, City Centre, Educational Zone
(Post Graduate Institute, Punjab University) and
the Industrial Area constitute the working part. The
Leisure Valley, gardens, sector greens and open
courtyards etc. are for the care of body and spirit.
The circulation system comprises 7 different types of
roads known as 7Vs. A pathway for cyclists called V8
was subsequently added to this circulation system.
The Capitol Complex comprises three architectural
masterpieces - the Secretariat, the High Court and
the Legislative Assembly, separated by large piazzas.
In the heart of the Capitol Complex stands the giant
metallic sculpture of The Open Hand, the official
emblem of Chandigarh, signifying the city’s credo of
‘open to give, open to receive’.
The City Centre is the heart of Chandigarh‘s activities.
It comprises the Inter-State Bus Terminus, Parade
Ground, District Courts, etc. on one hand, and a
vast business and shopping center on the other. The
4-storey concrete buildings house banks and offices
above and showrooms/ shops at the ground level
with wide pedestrian concourses. The Neelam Piazza
at the center has fountains with light and water
features. Proposal to set up a 11-storey building at
Sector 17 is in the offing. Sector 34 is another newly
developed commercial sector.
The Tricity is spread over approximately 175 sq kms
with a population of about 15 million.
Mohali is now renamed as Sahibzada Ajit Singh
Nagar Mohali (SAS Nagar Mohali) in the memory of
the Sikh 10th Guru Gobind Singh’s eldest son. The
city is famous for its international Cricket Stadium.
Panchkula gets its name from the five irrigation
canals that distribute water from the river Ghaggar.
The canals are a beautiful example of community
property and are maintained by the villagers along the
way, with distribution days decided. The prestigious
Chandimandir Cantonment Headquarters of the
Indian Army Western Command, is also located at
Panchkula.

and winter is separated by a transitional autumn,
which is perhaps the best season of the year. May
and June are the hottest months of the year with the

Delhi, depending on the time of the day.

400 acres and already boasts of more than
10,000 professionals. Infosys, Bharti Airtel and
Tech Mahindra are some of the key players in the

ecosystem for young entrepreneurs. Chandigarh also
happens ot be the northern region headquarters of
the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Tricity Attractions and Things to DoThe Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in
Mohali is widely regarded as the best cricket ground
in India for having excellent practice facilities and a
spectator friendly environment. The venue boasts
of world-class amenities and has hosted some very
crucial international matches.
Rose Garden is the largest of its kind in Asia. Named
after India’s former President, Zakir Hussain, this
beautiful garden was set up in 1967 with the support
of Chandigarh’s first Chief Commissioner, late Dr
M S Randhawa. Chandigarh rose garden contains
more than 17,000 plants with nearly 1,600 varieties
of roses. A spacious garden covering an area of 27
acres, Dr. Zakir Rose Garden also houses trees of

and Yellow Gulmohar. The Rose garden also serves
as the venue for hosting the annual ‘Festival of
Gardens’, a major cultural event of the city.
Rock Garden, Chandigarh is an epitome of
creativity and innovation. It is a unique garden that
consists of various art objects. But the best part
about the rock garden is that each of its artwork has
been made by using industrial and urban waste. It is
located in Sector 1 between the Capitol Complex and
Sukhna Lake. The credit for laying its foundation goes
to Nek Chand, who was the then Road Inspector in
the Engineering Department of Chandigarh Capital
Project. Rock garden has been established in the
form of an open-air exhibition hall. The garden
houses sculptures made by using a variety of different
discarded waste materials like frames, mudguards,
forks, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles,
porcelain, auto parts, broken bangles etc. Rock
garden in Chandigarh, India is a unique creation and
connoisseurs come from different parts of the world
to see this amazing garden.
Sukhna Lake strikes you for its natural beauty. It
lies in the foothills of the Shivalik range, surrounded
forests. It is a manmade lake 3 km long lake created
by dam built on the Sukhna Choe, which is a
seasonal stream flowing down from the Shivalik hills.

popular picnic spots. A mini zoo, plants nursery, a
Japanese garden, historic palaces and picnic lawns
await tourists. Especially at weekends, fountains are

Gardens for the Baisakhi (spring) festival in April and
for the Mango Festival in June and July.
Gurudrwara Nada Sahib: Nada was a very small
