Wine GROWING AREAS of THE CAPE

Wine regions of south AfricaSouth Africa has a rich, diverse and proud viticulture heritage, and the Cape produces some of the finest wines in the world. Each region has its own uniqueness, beauty and heritage.

StellenboschHome to more than 140 wine farms, Stellenbosch, also known as the Eikestad (City of Oaks in Afrikaans ) is the second oldest town in South Africa. Stellenbosch and it’s wine lands boasts the largest concentration and variety of wine farms in the country and together form the wine making, research and viticultural hub of South Africa.

PAARLPaarl began as an outpost for trade between Dutch settlers and the local Khoi. It derives its name from the appearance of the Paarl rock, which resembles a glistening pearl (Afr: paarl) after rain.In 1687 Governor Simon van der Stel granted the first farms to free settlers in the Drakenstein, to which Paarl belongs. The following year the French Huguenots arrived; and with them, the knowledge of making wine - Paarl is now truly the gateway to Cape wine culture.

WELLINGTONWellington is one of the youngest wine routes in the Cape, although the viticultural heritage dates back to the French Huguenots of the late 1600s. Officially launched in the mid 1990s, the predominantly working but charming farms produce some top quality red and white wines. The town lies at the foot of the Groenberg Mountain and is home of the vines, quite literally - almost 90% of the country’s vines are grown in the nurseries here, before being transported for planting.

OVERBERGOverberg is the gateway to the famous lighthouse at L’Agulhas, the tip of the continent where the two oceans meet.More than a century ago, Sir Robert Stanford found the climate and soils of this area perfectly suited to growing vegetables and fruit to supply passing ships. This moderate climate is perfect for the cultivation of grapes. The Overberg wines range from crisp dry white to full-bodied reds. The young wine growers of this pocket have selected their soils well and each express their own terroir in remarkable style.

FRANScHhOEKFranschhoek wine estates are not only situated in an breathtakingly picturesque valley, but are also the best wine-producing areas in the Cape Winelands and produce some of the world’s finest wines.

CONSTANTIAThe oldest wine-making region in the southern hemisphere, dating back to 1685, Constantia Valley is today the Cape’s most intimate wine route consisting of nine wine farms, each with their own distinctive heritage and premium wines.Enjoyed by Napoleon Bonaparte and royalty in the 18th century, Constantia Valley’s unique combination of terroir and climate produces some of the world’s finest wines.

OLIFANTS RIVIEROlifants River Valley is one of the northern most wine regions in South Africa’s Western Cape. This wine route encompasses 200 km of stark contrasts and extraordinary beauty, and the wines produced are quality, value-for-money wines. Rainfall is low and soils vary from sandy to red clay loams, but the Olifants River provides an abundance of water. It wasn’t always so. Only after WW II was a canal built in the lower Olifants River and intensive wine farming began.

DURBANVILLEDurbanville is home to the Western Cape’s two coolest wine regions due to the icy breezes off the ocean and the mists that roll down the surrounding mountains in the early evening.

ELIMOne of South Africa’s coolest and newest wine regions - it’s an interesting place for growing wine grapes, witha chilly climate (by South African standards) and plenty of cooling breezes from the ocean. A strong nerve isrequired on the part of the winegrower some seasons will just be too cold to get proper ripening. The coolingbreezes can translate into damaging winds, which retard vine growth.

WORCESTERWorcester winelands incorporate over 250 years of winemaking knowledge to produce, amongst other cultivars,Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Columbar to national acclaim. The town of Worcester lies in the famousBreede River Valley and the Worcester district is the largest in terms of winegrowing area and volume, as itproduces 27% of South Africa’s total volume of wine

ROBERTSONIn the heart of Route 62 - the longest wine route in the country - Robertson Wine Valley lies surrounded by majestic mountains in the Breede River Valley. With a minimal annual rainfall and harsh weather conditions, including hot, dry days and cold nights, wines produced in this region of lime-rich soil yield some world-class and unique tasting wines.

TULBACHTulbagh is susceptible to extreme weather conditions. Summers can reach upwards of 35 degrees celsius, while winter snow on the mountain caps is common. There are cool summer winds, and a variety in the terroir and micro-climates, which makes for the ideal conditions for an array of wine types.

SWARTLANDInitially the Swartland was renowned for its full-bodied red and fortified wines but the area has recently produced some top-table white wines and continues to produce top port-style wines. Most of the vines are grown under dryland conditions, and because the vines are not irrigated they are favoured as a blend with wines produced from irrigated vineyards due to their excellent quality and flavour.

KLEIN KAROoA little surprising, that grapes can grow in a semi-arid area, but grow they do in this region, renowned for its extremes in soils and climate. Within the Little Karoo (Klein Karoo) are a number of microclimates allowing winemakers to produce a large variety of wines that include dry and fortified wines, such as South Africa’s champion Muscadel, pot-stilled brandies and a wide range of premium red and white wines.

DARLINGDarling is now a demarcated wine district and home to her own wine route, including five wine cellars all of which benefit from the cool breezes off the Atlantic Ocean and the long, hot summers to produce some stunning wines with concentrated flavour, depth and intensity. The Cape West Coast has recently been recognised as a viticultural region.

ELGINTraditionally an apple-growing region, the Elgin Valley is exquisite, with long stretches of forest and endless mountain peaks surrounding fruit orchards. The wines that have begun production here are predominantly fruity, and Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz do particularly well. Elgin is regarded as a cool climate terroir, which means that grapes grown here potentially ripen slowly.

ABINGDON WINE ESTATE

Whilst the Cape is heralded as producing the finest wines in south Africa, we are enormously proud of the endevours of a special boutique Estate on our doorstep and a Winelist in Kwa-Zulu Natal would not be completewithout a mention of Abingdon Wine Estate .

The Estate is located in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and has positioned itself as a serious single vineyard boutique wine producer in the geographical unit of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The farm was bought in 2000 by owners and winemakers, Ian & Jane Smorthwaite, and the first vines were planted in 2004. At 1118m above sea level, Abingdon’s wines are unofficially the highest altitude certified single vineyard estate wines in the country and the only certified single vineyards in the entire Kwa-Zulu Natal region.

The cultivars planted range from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier to Chardonnay. The soilsare Clovelly and Griffon and offer good drainage, which is most welcome, especially when rain shows itself in summer. The wines reflect the cool slopes upon which the cultivars are planted and the nuances that these wineshave lean to Old World style. The uniqueness of this terroir can be tasted in the glass - crisp, fresh, elegant, witha keen minerality.

We are delighted to share the Abingdon Blanc de Noir with you.

CHAMPAGNEChampagne can only be produced within the region of Champagne, France. The primary grapes used in the production ofChampagne are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The appellation laws only allow grapes grown according to these rules and in specific areas to carry the name Champagne.

Celebrate with Champagne -At the Beverly Hills we love a celebration! Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, a promotion, or a get together with friends and family there is always a reason to celebrate.

“I only drink Champagne when I’m happy, and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I’m thirsty.”- Lily Bollinger

CAP CLASSIQUEBOTTLE FERMENTED SPARKLERS

Whilst Champagne may be known as the most classic example of sparkling wine, in South African, we call it Cap Classique. In other countries it is also known as Espumante as in Portugal or Cava in Spain. Cap Classique follows the same method to that of Champagne and initiates a secondary fermentation in the bottle and it is this defining process that sparkling wines are classified.

CHENIN BLANC

As the most widely planted variety in South African and originally known as Steen. It is said that Chenin Blanc may havebeen one of the first varietals to be planted by Jan Van Riebeek in 1655, others believe it was only in 1685 that the varietal was grown when it was brought in by the French Huguenots fleeing France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Today it offers an enjoyable glass of wine in forming the base for some outstanding white blends, simply as a single varietal or even as a dessert wine. Established vineyards in South Africa along with the grapes diversity and availability in growing regions to that of winemaking styles make this a firm favourite among South Africans.
