Vol. 47 No. 12 29th August 2013

Dear Members of the Saints Family,“You really do have a wonderful school here, we are most

impressed”.

One of the comments from a very impressed parent who was at our recent Cerise and Blue Open Evening and attending for the third consecutive year, even after their son was already accepted into Saints for 2013! This parent was obviously wanting to get more of a feel for the culture of the College as it is such a powerful quality that we never take for granted and continually build upon as teachers.

Another comment reflected how confidently our well-groomed hosts performed their duties of directing guests around our College. Some of the guests were just impressed by how clean and organised we are as a College.

The Cerise and Blue Open Evening gets bigger and more successful each year with more of the community taking an interest in what we have to offer our students. I walked away from the evening with a smile on my face.

The College offers many opportunities for staff to interact with students, not only in class but also outside of school hours which is one of the major strengths that parents see in our school. Our “Activities Week” was a fine example of the generosity and professionalism of our staff with a large percentage of them off campus and on duty at camp. Year 8 missed out on the action with a modified program at school after being on camp during Term 1. Year 9 ventured to ‘Sugarbag Station’ near Mt Surprise which offered students an outback experience linked more closely to the ‘Karma Waters Experience’ offered in Year 10. The ‘Retreat’ for the Year 11

cohort was the highlight for the week while Year 12 were preparing for QCS tests under the watchful eyes of teaching staff back at school.

I am currently engaged in my 25th year as a Marist Educator at St Augustine’s College. My time at Saints has been characterised by quality relationships with staff and students of which I am very grateful. I have had the privilege of working with a large number of staff who are very loyal to the Marist faith over my years and they have been very influential in my direction as an educator and spiritually. I recently gave my commitment to the Catholic Church and strengthened my association with the Marist Brothers who have been so supportive of myself over this time.

The sense of community here at Saints is evident in everything we undertake and is one of the special Marist qualities that sets us apart from other schools. At the recent Australian Marist Schools Conference, Br Emili Turu stressed the importance of having God in your heart, working closely with our students and operating as a team – attributes that Champagnat saw as the building blocks of Marist Education and the way of the future. Champagnat would be a proud man if he were to see what is happening in this nurturing environment at St Augustine’s College. I can only see a vibrant future with a new College Principal next term and Year 7 starting at the College in 2015.

From the Acting

Principal

Dear Member of the Saints Family,

“The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change.”

This oft quoted dictum is believed to have first been penned by the 6th Century BCE Greek philosopher Heraclitus. Heraclitus’ notion on universal flux (all things in change) influenced such notables as Plato and Aristotle. His notion of universal flux centered on the belief that all things are in a constant state of change and that each time we encounter something, that thing differs from previous encounters. Heraclitus extended this to include humans as well and noted that each new encounter with a person is essentially an encounter with a new person. Heraclitus only wrote one book and did not have devoted students. Indeed Plato was not particularly a fan. However, this notion of change is particularly poignant for St Augustine’s College at this present time.

Some 100 parents joined the College last week for an Assembly to farewell Br Bill. Br Bill was Principal of St Augustine’s College for a little over 3 years. In the speeches that were delivered at the assembly some of the achievements of Br Bill during his tenure were celebrated. Amongst those were the increase in attendance rates, strong OP results, improved fundraising targets and extensive renovations of the College facilities. However, it was Br Bill’s strong pastoral approach and positive relationships with families, staff and students that stand out as his crowning achievement. The Assembly was a very fitting farewell and the College community thanks Br Bill for his caring leadership as we continue to pray for him and wish him every success in the future.

Just prior to the Farewell Assembly, Br Peter Carroll, in his capacity at the time as Acting Provincial of the Australian Marist Brothers, informed the staff and students of the appointment of Br Darren Burge as the new Principal for St Augustine’s College. Br Darren is at present concluding his time as the Principal of The John Berne Centre in Sydney and will join Saints at the commencement of Term 4. The College will formally welcome Br Darren at an Assembly early in Term 4. Further details to follow. We very much look forward to Br Darren joining the Saints community.

One item of significant change for most Queensland Secondary Schools is the introduction of Year 7 into secondary schools in 2015. In preparation for this event there is a lot of change in management occurring “behind the scenes”. The most obvious change will be the demolition of the J-block building and the building of 4 new science labs, 16 new classrooms, a hospitality centre and new amenities block. In addition to this, there will be a new boarding building to accommodate the additional demand on boarding. In 2015, the College will welcome 120 Year 7 students as well as our normal intake of Year 8 boys. The new year level will also allow the College to add to its teaching and support staff. This is an exciting opportunity for the College.

An annual change that the College needs to cater for is the movement of families away from Cairns. If you anticipate withdrawing your son from Saints for 2014, may I ask that you contact the College as soon as possible.

According to Heraclitus, “It is not possible to step twice into the same river”. The same can be said of St Augustine’s College. However, with its 84 years of tradition, culture and Marist spirituality the core elements of Saints that are so valued by its community will continue to inform every change and new opportunity.

Sincerely,

David HarrisActing Principal

Year 10 Karma WatersThe boys have returned from the camp most positively with many stories and renewed enthusiasm at school. The major focus of the camp was about challenging the boys, improving teamwork and developing leadership skills. It was also a chance for the boys to enjoy the environment and make some new friends. For most boys, they were way out of their comfort zone and it come as a shock on the first day walking 7-10 km and arriving at campsites on the Mitchell River without any signs of civilization along the way.

The Explorers group had a navigation exercise on the second day that resulted in a mars bar and coke for success in finding the correct grid reference point on the map. The Prospectors had a relaxing day at Dog Grave Crossing after a 3 km walk. This year a new initiative of a ‘Movie Night in the Sand Dunes’ was trialled at Dog Grave Crossing with a large number of the boys happy to relax and enjoy “Fast and Furious 6”. With high spirits the two groups powered through the 7km walk on Wednesday which includes two river crossings and traversing some difficult terrain. Lantern stalks were an eagerly anticipated night time activity and the staff found it most enjoyable to spotlight the boys as soon as they made a noise while moving in on the target. The last night was spent at Nychum Crossing for the Prospectors and Horn Valley for the Explorers with preparations being made for an early rise and walk to the buses for transport back to Cairns.

I take this opportunity to congratulate the boys on their positive attitude and participation in the camp. Thanks must go to all staff involved whether they were hiking, operating support vehicles or driving buses. This camp would not be possible without the support of Alan & Karen Pedersen of Karma Waters Station.

SENIOR FORMALThe College Senior Formal was held at the Pullman Cairns International Hotel on Wednesday 7th August. It was a glittering affair with our Year 12s exhibiting a high degree of sartorial elegance, only to be completely surpassed by the sheer glamour and elegance of their partners. The evening started with the usual extraordinary array of vehicular conveyances making their way up to the imposing hotel entrance in front of an enthusiastic crowd of onlookers. A journey down the red carpet led every couple to the reception line where each Senior introduced his partner to Mr David Harris, the College’s Acting Principal. It must have been an interesting moment when it was the turn of Mr Harris’ son, Ben, to introduce his partner. After a most appreciative speech of welcome from College Captain, Matt Hancock, each class, in succession, escorted their partners onto the dance floor where they were most accomplished in performing a gypsy tap. A sumptuous meal was provided and then the mainline, if less formal, dancing got seriously underway. Before anyone had realized it, the clock had struck 11pm and it was time to depart, a splendid night having been had by all. It was a wonderful and memorable evening, yet another rite of passage as our Seniors continue to make their transition into adulthood.Mr Andrew Dorahy - Year 12 Coordinator

Gildas GamesREGINALD WINS 3rd Annual GILDAS GAMES!

Two years after winning inaugural Gildas Games contest, the Year 8 Reginald team (Jesse Hyden, Gus Magor, Bayley Quirk, Mitchell Schulze) restamped their names on the perpetual trophy with a win over Walter (Matthew Cheesman, Jack Dwyer, Connor Mitchell and Jak Morgan) by 24 points to 20 during the College’s Cerise & Blue Open Night. The Gildas Games is based upon how fast and accurate the Year 8 lads can demonstrate a set of research skills acquired during Activities’ Week. These skills hopefully will strengthen their assignment writing in the future.

Semi- Final Results: Reginald (25) d. Heavey (20)

Walter (22) d. Phelan (20)

Mr Chris Wright - Director of Gildas

Cerise and Blue: Congratulations to all students who presented work, demonstrated techniques and projects, and performed for our visitors in the Art Room, FTV Room, McLaughlin Theatre, Music Room, Arts Quad and under Ambrose for the Cerise and Blue Open Night last week. Feedback from our visitors was very positive and Saints arts students really stepped up to present our varied, high quality arts program in the best light. Thank you students and teachers for your presence and contributions on the night. The combined schools music items (with St Monica’s students) sounded really great too and demonstrated the wonderful musical links that the two Colleges enjoy.

Term 4 Tour: A reminder to all members of the Concert Band, Big Band and String Orchestra to return the tour confirmation slip that was handed out two weeks ago.

Riverland Big Band: This regional secondary school big band performed with the SAC Big Band on Thursday to an appreciative lunch time crowd in the under Ambrose area.

ACO2 Concert: All classroom music students and string players are encouraged to attend the upcoming Australian Chamber Orchestra 2 concert at the Civic Theatre on Tuesday, September 10 from 7.30pm. Letters to all these students have been distributed. Any student who is intending to attend should return the slip and payment of $21 in an envelope as soon as possible.

Br Bill’s Farewell: Thank you to the Cantors and musicians who presented music for the sad occasion of farewelling Br Bill Sullivan last week. Br Bill made comment many times on the very high standard of the Arts program here at Saints. Well done to you all.

Saints Musicians Performing in the Community: Last weekend a number of our wonderful Saints musicians performed in various venues and events around the Cairns district. Congratulations to Ryan O’Grady, Daniel McNae, James McNae, Michael Elston and Andrew Martin for your performances with the Cairns Youth Orchestra at their major concert at St Monica’s Cathedral. Ryan led the orchestra for part of the concert. Also to Lyle Bray for performing in the Cairns Festival parade on drumkit and to Jordan Brodie for his solo performances at Yungaburra. Also, Jack Boylan-Ascione and Andrew Martin are regular performers with Cairns Brass as they prepare for their competition trip these coming holidays. Well done everyone: it is great to see all this community music involvement in our students.

SAINTS YOUTH THEATREThe SYT actors are currently working hard on a performance of Arabian Nights. This student directed work beautifully brings to life the art of storytelling through the fables of the Orient. Students will present their production to family and friends mid term 4. New members are welcome. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday from 3.30pm – 5pm in the McLaughlin Theatre.

At times, anyone can feel a bit overwhelmed/ unable to cope. At those times, you need to be able to talk to someone and not be afraid to ask for help. Many of us don’t like to ask for help. We don’t like to burden other people; we are worried about what they will think about what we tell them; we don’t want them to tell other people; we are scared they will laugh at us. Yet most of us would want to help our friends and family if we thought they were having a hard time, so why would they feel any differently towards us?Sometimes you can feel better just talking to somebody about a problem. Asking for help is important. It can be anything from talking to someone about your bad day, confiding in someone about your problems, discussing some options. The important thing is to not try and cope with everything on your own. It is not good for any of us to spend too much time on our own, especially if we are feeling low and vulnerable.Talking with friends and family can help you to see things more clearly, but if there is a more long term mental health problems, you need to seek professional support and ongoing counselling. 1. Think about who would be the best person to talk to

(only YOU can decide who you feel most comfortable talking to).

2. Choose a good time and place for this discussion (so that you are not interrupted or uncomfortable in the surroundings).

3. Think about the outcome that you want from this discussion. Do you simply want to tell someone how you are feeling? Or would you like more practical or emotional support?

4. Remember, however difficult it is to talk about your feelings, you will probably feel better just talking about your problems. It is important that you are not on your own and struggling on your own when you are feeling low. People who care about you will want to help you.

5. Counselling help: Contact your School Counsellor or agencies such as Headspace.

Please Note: Friends and family can provide personal support and a listening ear; but you do need to seek ongoing professional help if there is a recurring pattern of feeling overwhelmed/depressed/out of sorts.Ms Jenny Jensen - Counsellor

Cerise and Blue Open eveningCerise and Blue Open Night was a chance for us to showcase our wonderful College. The sheer volume of parents and prospective students visiting the various displays and presentations, musicals, facilities and resources was overwhelming. The Science Department had the young minds in deep thought; the Food Tech Department filled hungry bellies; while all the other Departments through their various displays, provided a valuable drawcard to prospective students. Thanks to all the dedicated staff and current students for their efforts in making this a very successful night.

On Saturday 17th August the Tablelands Country Dinner brought together boarding families from the Atherton Tablelands and surrounding areas along with staff including Mr David Harris (Acting Principal at Saints), Br John, Mr Andrew Dorahy, Mr Czek Kersevani, Mr Glenn McKenzie, Mrs Kastelle Gane, Mr Richard Bassano, Mr Simon Martino, Mr David Lawrence Mrs Jane Keilar, Mrs Caron Gates and Ms Kirsten Sharpe (Principal at St Moncia’s College) and myself and my own family.

It was a relaxed gathering catered for jointly by Saints and the families in attendance who brought along some delicious desserts that were enjoyed by all.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to Mr Cam Duffy and Mrs Andrea Duffy for hosting the dinner at their home at Malanda. Their generosity is much appreciated by the College and I’m sure by all of the guests on the night.

The Country Dinners are a very important contact between Saints and its boarding families and they help maintain a vital partnership between the College and the Boarders’ homes. I encourage all families who are able, to attend their own Country Dinner when it comes to their area.

We again thank the Tablelands families for the hospitality and friendship extended to the staff of Saints on Saturday night.

collegeOn 28th August flashing light school zone signs were installed on Scott Street.

St Augustine’s College was nominated to receive these new signs as part of a $10 million Queensland Government commitment to improve school road safety.

You will notice that the new signs look similar to standard school zone signs with the important addition of a red flashing ring around the speed limit as well as two flashing yellow lights at the top of the sign. The installation of flashing light school zone signs is proven to improve visibility of school zones, serving as an active reminder for motorists to slow down. The school zone on Scott Street will be an all-day school zone and the flashing light school zone signs will operate between the hours of 7:00am and 4:00pm during school days.

So next time you’re dropping off or picking up your child, keep an eye out for the new signs and make sure you stick to the signed speed limit.

OUR SUNS SHONE BUT THE LIONS ROAREDWednesday afternoon last week our recently crowned Gold Coast Suns Cup champions met with the Brisbane Lions Cup winners (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS) in the play off for the AFL under 14 State Title. The afternoon began with the Saints boys making the trip out to the airport to pick up the visitors. The coach trip from the airport to Cazaly’s Stadium saw the two teams sizing one another up and anticipating who would be playing on who. Upon arrival at Cazalys, the boys had a short warm up before the much anticipated opening bounce.

The Saints squad knew that it would be a tough match but they stepped up in true Saints spirit and met the boys from Palm Beach head on. Our boys did their very best and showed courage and commitment against the team from the AFL School of Excellence. In spite of our boys’ determination and tenacity, the outstanding skills and strength of the Palm Beach boys was evident from early on in the match and they held the lead convincingly at each change, running out winners 15.13 (103) to 3.1 (19). I must add here that our score was one of the highest scores to be recorded against the Palm Beach Under 14 side this year, so well done to our boys for their efforts and achievements.

Our goal scorers were Jack West, Lochlan McDonald and Jacob Heron and the best on ground for the day was Jacob Heron. Throughout the campaign, our Gold Coast Suns champions remained undefeated and had an outstanding season. Our most improved player for the campaign was Harrison Cozens and the best player for the campaign was Jack West. Thanks and congratulations go to all the boys and also to the coach, Mr Matt Walsh.
