WelcomeWelcome to Carew Academy. We offer our Lower School students a core suite of curriculum subjects that provide a solid foundation of learning and experiences that are meaningful and relevant in 21st century Britain. In addition, through our Enrichment program, we offer a range of extra-curriculum subjects

and experiences that enable students to realise their potential in a variety of settings beyond the classroom and improve their self-esteem.We want to ensure that our students move through Carew as confident, well-rounded individuals who define themselves by their strengths rather than their weaknesses.

Always attend. We love coming to school. The teachers work really hard to make sure lessons and activities are enjoyable and engaging.

Behave in every lesson. We are a Rights Respecting School. We respect each other’s right to come to school and have an education. To give ourselves and each other the best chance we work hard in our lessons, ask for help when we need it and never give up.

Challenge ourselves. We think it’s important to challenge ourselves in ALL areas of our learning. We work hard in the classroom to develop our academic skills, like spelling, reading and number. We also work really hard in our other activities such as life skills, options and enrichment, which are designed to develop our confidence, curiosity and communication.

Here we follow the ABC of success!

Our PathwaysAt Carew Academy, we have three Curriculum Pathways:

1) Skills for Life 2) Skills for Work 3) Skills for Further Education

All students follow a programme of study based on the National Curriculum, but adapted to suit their individual needs and to help meet the outcomes of their Education, Health and Care Plan.

Our Skills for Life Pathway focuses on students increasing their independence throughout their time with us, with lessons focusing on literacy, numeracy, personal care, travel training, personal safety and independent living.

Our Skills for Work Pathway focuses on students obtaining the skills they need to be successful in securing either paid or voluntary work in the future, with a focus on literacy, numeracy and work skills including personal safety and relationships education.

Our Skills for Further Education Pathway focuses on students achieving accredited outcomes which will provide them access to courses in Further Education Colleges when they leave Carew. This includes preparing for GCSE and Functional Skills exams.

Placement on a particular pathway is not fixed and students may change pathway as they move through the school, based on their progress and in discussion with parents.

Students have Enrichment for three afternoons per week and will do a different activity each day. Each Enrichment will change every half term which means that over the course of a year, they will have the opportunity to experience eighteen different activities. These include: jewellery making, social groups, indoor rock climbing and caving, horse riding, craft and cycling.

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and Health EducationThe RSE and Health Education curriculum is split into three strands. Each pathway will explore the following:

Teachers at Carew Academy will deliver lessons which are sensitive, age and developmentally appropriate. The topics aim to give students the knowledge and skills to create a happy and successful adult life, developing positive and healthy relationships and being able make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and self-efficacy.

Pupils will continue to develop their resilience, understand boundaries and privacy, develop knowledge to recognise and report abuse, and to understand their rights over their own bodies.

Extra-curricular activitiesMost of our extra-curricular activities are run during lunchtimes so as to enable the maximum number of students to participate. These clubs include library, colouring, dodgeball, football, rugby and choir. We take part in a number of different sporting competitions and events throughout the year, giving students exciting and memorable experiences whilst also teaching them the important skills of being good team players and being a good sport, both in victory and defeat.

Throughout the year, classes go on different day trips which tie into the curriculum theme for the term. In the Summer term there is a one-night sleepover each for Year 7 and Key Stage 2, which are always a lot of fun!

One of our most popular trips involves spending a week living on a farm. This is always an extremely rewarding experience for students - as well as preparing home-cooked meals and working with a variety of different animals, there is a high therapeutic input from trained farm staff.
