Carew Newton HouseThis attractive Edwardian six-bedroom family home, which is set in nearly five acres of grounds at Carew Newton within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, occupies an elevated position with views towards Carew Castle.

“My parents bought the property in 1986, when my father retired from working in London and wanted to move to the country,” recalls Katie. “We’d holidayed in the area several times before that, getting to know the area and making friends. Carew House offered the country lifestyle that my parents envisaged and so my brother and I as children were able to enjoy the freedom and fun of a large garden and keep horses in the paddocks.”

“The house was reroofed and the exterior re-rendered,” remembers Katie. “Otherwise my parents just updated the interior in their own style. The only other major change came more recently, when the ground floor study was converted into a wet room. While two bedrooms have full en-suite facilities, the other four all have sinks put in by the previous owner, which was very useful not only to us as a family but also for guests that came to stay. Four ground floor reception rooms, including a family room next to the kitchen, provided us with plenty of space for every kind of social occasion. In addition, the cellar had been converted into a studio with a bar area by the previous owner; it became our games room and was a great place for us and for our parents to entertain too.”

“The gardens are quite private, being surrounded by many mature trees,” continues Katie. “There are two interconnected walled gardens at the back, each with a gated entrance from the road. One features an ornamental pond, while the other has a pergola with a stone table, where it’s nice to sit out. There are lawns to each side, one of which was used to erect a marquee for my brother’s engagement party. The flagstone terrace on the south side of the house provides views down the hill over the front lawn and paddock to Carew Castle. The garden has seen all kinds of entertaining from barbecues to hosting the hunt; we’ve had bands playing on the terrace too. The main driveway comes up from Butts Lane past the paddocks and front lawn to a parking area by the house. The paddocks still have a water supply although there are no longer any stables.”

“While the house is out in the country, a wide range of amenities are accessible at Tenby and Pembroke Dock, including stations, supermarkets and secondary schools,” adds Katie. “Nearer to hand there are farm shops, notably at Milton, and primary schools at Creselly and Sageston. As well as Pembrokeshire’s lovely scenery and beaches, the Bluestone National Park Resort and Oakwood Theme Park are also nearby.” “Carew Newton House was a lovely place to grow up and was a gathering place for the wider family too; I hope its new owners will enjoy it as much as we did,” concludes Katie.*
