I think there must be something in the water around Sutherland PCYC with Sam Goodman now qualified for Elite World Championships in Hamburg and Josh Fitz-patrick winning a silver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas on 24th July and Jacob Sheridan has been selected for the first 2018 Youth Olympic Camp. Sean Fitzpatrick has concentrated his efforts at the junior end and it is paying
off now as his charges move from Junior to Youth and then to Elite. There is noth-ing like seeing skill win over strength and power and in my mind and a sweet look-ing boy or girl who climbs in the ring and becomes a unstoppable force is what box-ing is all about. The Adidas sponsored junior development days championed by Sean and is being taken all around Boxing NSW are proving very popular so if you have a junior program climb on board. However if you want to have that pathway for your students with Boxing Australia (NSW) there are conditions for your gym. Your academy must be an affiliated member of Boxing Australia NSW which btw gives you the best insurance deal ever . You must be a minimum Level 1 Coach with Boxing Australia with now the opportunity to renew online makes it easier than ever. You cannot be switching back and forth from the ABL as we are no longer prepared to have gyms “have their cake and eat it to”. No one says that you can’t be in the league but you are ultimate-ly going to have to choose. We are under instructions from Boxing Australia and if we want to stay with the only AIBA Olympic sanctioned body in Australia we must follow their rules too. At the 2017 Boxing Australia (NSW) AGM Boxing Australia directed us to change our constitution to allow us to suspend athletes and coaches for cross code boxing. They are yet to force us to enforce this yet but its coming. Boxing Australia (NSW) committee apart from our fantastic Executive Officer are volunteers so nearly all the money received is invested back into the sport so we are supporting as many competitors as we can for travel and accommodation to tourna-ments. Never enough we understand but we are balancing keeping our association viable as well as doing the absolute best we can for the sport in NSW and beyond. This year has seen Boxing NSW run and control it’s own tournaments and with the second Swinging Sunday under our belts plus several other state and tournaments done in a joint venture with the PCYC’s we are gaining great momentum. We are also grateful to our good commercial promoters both within and out of Syd-ney who stick with and believe in Boxing Australia (NSW) and value the quality of competition that brings to their promotions. How can we make it better ? We need more people through the doors at our events we only want to break even or make just a little bit so bring your friends and family along it’s the cheapest price for the best quality boxing around. More gyms affiliating , more coaches qualifying and ultimately more competitors. There are only about 1000 competitors who register per annum with Boxing Aus-tralia NSW in a population of some 7.5 million people who live in NSW. We have plenty of room for growth !
