This is the time of year when our congregation shifts.
People have already left Ohio for vacation while others
are here to visit. Welcome to those who have come
today.
I recall meeting a family last year. They were
simply passing through on their way to some other
destination. Having stayed the night in a local hotel,
they chose to join us for Mass. It is always wonderful
when we others join us and expand our horizons a bit.
Whatever brings you here, please know that you
are always welcome. And if you are looking for a place
to celebrate Christmas – or any Sunday – please don’t
hesitate to come back.

Pastor’s note:
TWO VIEWPOINTS Last weekend’s snow offered a great
example of two ways to look at any
situation. For many, it was hard work
opening the driveway and a challenge
to drive the roads. But for many others – kids and adults
alike – the snow meant sledding, cross-country skiing,
and picture-perfect scenery. It seems there are always
various ways to look at any situation.
This is not to make light of the fender-benders or
more serious accidents. Nor do we want to overlook the
frustration of people waiting for tow trucks. But it is a
great reminder that people can find joy and fun in what
nature throws at them.
A number of years ago I decided that since I will
likely live most of my adult life in this area, I needed to
enter into each season. So I started cross-country skiing,
which I still truly love. And I learned to dress warm so
that I won’t spend my time complaining about the cold.
As for driving, I simply start earlier and am more cautious
when out.
We can’t always make everything come out the
way we want it. But we can find ways to appreciate a
good side of what comes our way. No, I am not saying we
should overlook the serious and horrible tragedies that
happen. But for the regular day-to-day activities, it is
easier to enjoy the elements than waste time and energy
complaining.
NO MASS ON THURSDAY
We will not have our usual 6:15 p.m. Mass on Thursday,
December 26. The regular Mass schedule will resume the
following week. Thanks.
MASSES NEXT WEEKEND
Please keep in mind that our Sunday Mass schedule for
Dec 28-29, will be the same as all weekends. And the
Masses for December 31 - January 1 (Solemnity of
Motherhood of Mary, close of the Christmas octave, a
holy day) will be 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 31, 2013
and 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
MONDAYS AT ST. CLARE’S
Each Monday we celebrate our parish Mass at 9:30 a.m.,
instead of in our own chape. However, due to a funeral,
there will not be a Mass this Monday, Dececmber 23.
![Page 3: Welcome to Blessed John - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/blessedjohnxxiii/documents... · December 26. The regular Mass schedule will resume the following week. Thanks. MASSES](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060404/5f0eee507e708231d441a4a7/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
FAITH ALIVE!
Our next Faith Alive! gatherings
will be 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.,
on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. At
these gatherings we continue the
Creed by exploring our “belief in
the Holy Catholic Church.”
Faith Alive! is open to parishioners of all ages.
Registration at this time, since we are at the midpoint, is
$10 a session. If you are interested in attending these
gatherings and have not yet registered please do so on the
Parish Website under life-long faith formation.
Parents with children in grades K-5, remember
Faith Alive! is our ongoing religious education process.
Students and their families in these grades are expected to
participate every year and all year, not just when they are
in a sacramental program. Home lessons need to be
completed and turned in on Faith Alive! Sunday. Thanks
to all those parents who take their children’s faith
development seriously and attend Faith Alive! with
FIRST COMMUNION AT
THE 11:30 MASS Congratulations to Emily Keiser,
Zachary Bernhoft, Bennett
Bernhoft, Aidan Stevenson-Powell,
Joshua Gumpf, Jeffery (Brock)
Gumpf and Tyler Gumpf who will
receive the First Communion at the 11:30 a.m., Mass this
weekend. Welcome to the table of the Lord!
FIRST EUCHARIST CLASSES TO
BEGIN JANUARY 9 Classes begin for our second graders and their parents at
7:00 p.m., Jan 9. The first session will be a coaching
session, so one parent and the child need to attend.
Babysitting will be provided.
SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Our Sunday offering for last weekend was $11,721.50.
Thank you. As winter storms come and often affect
Sunday Mass attendance, please consider ways that you
can continue support your parish.
Some parishioners may want to make a special
‘end-of-the-year’ gift.’ Please know that if you choose to
do this, it would be well appreciated as we continue to
thrive as a parish, thanks to all who are actively
committed to our vision and purpose as a parish.
WELCOME HOME
We love seeing sons and daughters of the parish who are
home for Christmas and subsequent days. If you are now
college students, working out of town, or in the military
service and have been able to join us, a very warm
welcome to you. Take a moment to let us know how you
are doing. Blessings!
ON THE ROAD
As many of our parishioners take to the roads these
weeks, please know that you go with our prayers for safe
travels. Also we pray that your time away, whether
visiting relatives or vacationing, will be restorative. We
look forward to seeing you when you return. For those
like me who will remain in town, also be sure to give
yourselves some rest time.
FOR SALE AFTER MASS TODAY
Looking for that unique gift from someone who is
interested in local history? We have photo-pictures of the
Toledo Diocese, first printed five years ago when the
diocese celebrated its one hundredth birthday, for sale
after Mass. They have been discounted, but the
information and photos are timeless.
Because people have asked, we also will have our
premium coffee from Guatemala for sale after Masses
this weekend. You can also buy some coffee with one of
the St. Vincent de Paul cook books – two great gifts
together!
WINTER WEATHER MASS POLICY
If and when snow days occur this winter,
please know that we cancel weekday Masses
on those days when the Perrysburg schools are
canceled (not delayed). As for Sunday Masses, they are
almost never canceled!
PARISH WEBSITE
Our parish website is updated regularly
and can probably answer almost any
question you have. Even more, it is a
good introduction for you to the life of
this parish. Please visit it often. And don’t forget you
can stream Sunday Masses live or watch them in the
website archives. Website: www.blessedjohn.org.

Sponsors, we invite you to come and join your candidates for dinner, prayer, the final session, and Mass (4:45-8:00 p.m.) on this day! This will be a special moment for both of you to share in the faith together.
IMPACT “I Believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic
Church” We had a lot of fun last week at the Impact Christmas party! It will be exciting to see you all again in the new year for our next Impact meeting, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Wednesday January 15, in the Atrium! The next part of the Creed we are talking about is our belief in “One, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.” Through this night we will come to understand more about our Church and how the faith has been passed down to us through thousands of years! It’s sure to be a very fun, and interesting night!

BLESSED JOHN XXIII
WOOD COUNTY, OHIO December 22, 2013
NO MUSIC REHEARSALS THIS WEEK
Music rehearsals will resume normal schedules the week
of January 5.
CHRISTMAS MASS PRELUDE
MUSIC Because we know many families will arrive
early for each Christmas Mass, we will be
singing many of your favorite Christmas
carols 30 minutes prior to each Mass. Be
sure to come in time to join in the fun!
CHRISTMAS MUSIC PREVIEW
We have a lot of great music planned for our
Christmas celebrations However, there are
two songs you may want to check out ahead
of time and add to your Christmas playlists.
Be sure to take a listen to When Hope Came Down by
Kari Jobe and Love Has Captured the Night by Josh
Blakesley.
CHURCH DECORATING TODAY
Join us today, beginning at 1:00 p.m., as we
decorate the church for Christmas. We can
use people of all ages. Lots of fun and you
will feel good about your contribution to the parish.
CHRISTMAS MASS PLANS
Although many of our families will be out of town,
many others will have guests. We are happy to have
them at Mass with us. As you plan ahead, please
remember the following:
All Masses will be crowded. Plan to come early.
All Masses may take longer than usual (because of
crowds), so do not schedule dinner so close to Mass
time that you get distracted or feel you have to rush
out.
Consider the less crowded Masses, even if it means
making adjustments with your other schedules.
Which Masses are less crowded? Christmas morning
at 10:00 is probably the least attended. By far and
away, the most crowded is 4:30 Mass.
Please show great hospitality to all those who are
coming, especially people you don’t recognize. We
don’t want visitors to have to stand during a long,
boring homily.
Please show great patience in all matters.
If you have family from out of town, bring them
along.
If there are people unable to attend because of
sickness or snow-storms, then don’t forget all our
Christmas Masses will be streamed live through our
parish website.
![Page 7: Welcome to Blessed John - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/blessedjohnxxiii/documents... · December 26. The regular Mass schedule will resume the following week. Thanks. MASSES](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060404/5f0eee507e708231d441a4a7/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
FINAL DAYS OF ADVENT
For many of our parishioners, today (Sunday) marks
the beginning of Christmas: school is out and lots of
folks are taking vacation days. However, in the church
we are still in Advent.
Monday, December 23, we have our regular 9:30 a.m.
Mass at St. Clare’s.
Monday, December 23, there will be time for
Sacrament of Reconciliation, 4:30-5:30 & 7:00-8:00
p.m.
Our church is open all day on Monday (9:00 a.m. -
8:00 p.m.); stop in for a short prayer to ‘calm the
spirit’ before the rush of the holidays.
TIME TO REGISTER?
Whether or not you are registered as parishioners, you are
always welcome here. At the same time, if you are a
regular participant, you may find now the time to register.
What happens when you ‘sign up’ is that you help us get
to know you. But you are also making a personal
commitment to your faith growth.
We have discovered that when people register,
they usually take the commitment very seriously. That
means they invest themselves more in this journey of faith
that we are all on. So we encourage you to pick up one of
the Parish Registration Intent forms at the church doors
(or on line) and complete it today.
OFFICE CLOSED
Blessed John parish offices will be
closed on Tuesday, December 24
and Wednesday, December 25.
The parish center will be open on
Thursday and Friday, December
26-27, 9:00-4:00.
POPE FRANCIS’ EXHORTATION
Join Fr. Herb at one of his Saturday morning “Going
Deeper” sessions, 9:00-10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 18,
for a session that will review Pope Francis’ recent
published exhortation, “Evangelii Guadium” (The Joy of
the Gospel). This man, who has excited Christians and
non-Christians alike, has brought about a statement of
faith that men and women of faith in the 21st century will
want to read. Come and enjoy this session at what Fr.
Herb likes to call informal but informative discussion. No
registration necessary.
PRAY FOR NEW BISHOP
By the time you read this, our
diocese will likely have what is
called a Temporary Administrator.
This person is elected from the
College of Consultors, a group of
eight priests who have actively
served on various diocesan committees. (I have been one
of these Consultors for a number of years.) The
Administrator will fill in until a new bishop is appointed
by Pope Francis.
You may notice that we are omitting the name of
the bishop in the Eucharistic prayer during this time when
there is no bishop within the diocese. I suspect I and some
other priests will continue to pray for Leonard, out of ten-
years-worth of habit. But I will try to catch myself. Not
saying a name is a great reminder that we have a ‘Vacant
See,’ that is, no bishop at this time.
I think we all know how significant a leader can
be and how any leader can set a tone for an organization.
The same is especially true for a bishop and a diocese. My
own personal prayer is that, following the vision and
understanding of Pope Francis, we will receive a bishop
who is pastoral and truly willing ‘to get his shoes dirty’ as
the pope says.
Meanwhile, we also pray that Archbishop Leonard
Blair of Hartford, will be guided by the Holy Spirit in his
new ministry. - hw
RETIRED RELIGIOUS FUND
Thanks to all who have remembered the Retired
Religious Fund last two weekends.
There are envelopes in your packets to
help you with this national collection,
which is held each December to support
various religious communities of sisters
(nuns) and brothers. Many of these
communities are made up primarily of
retired persons, and many are simply
not prepared financially for the future.
The Catholic Church in this
country owes much to religious sisters
who taught in schools, served in hospitals, ran
orphanages, and did consistent outreach to immigrants
and the poor. Often they were paid little or nothing for
their services.
There are special envelopes in your church
packets. In addition, you will see special envelopes on the
chairs in the church. Thank you.

BLESSED JOHN XXIII
WOOD COUNTY, OHIO December 22, 2013
NEW BUILDING
PROJECT
BEING UNVEILED Hundreds of parishioners came to
one of the four sessions that we
had to show the early architect’s
renderings of our new parish
offices and church building. With
our over-flow that Sunday
Masses as well as lack of room for staff offices, meetings,
and faith formation classes, we must move ahead. The
new church building will seat 800-900 persons and have a
large gathering area (narthex). There will be more offices
and, together with our present Parish Life Center, we will
have more meeting rooms to meet all our needs. The
parish continues to grow rapidly and this building will
provide the necessary new home.
WHEN OUR PATRON GETS CANONIZED
In four months we will be facing something that very
few parishes experience. Pope John XXIII, pope from
1958 to 1963, will be canonized a saint on April 27,
2014. At that time, our parish will no longer be called
‘Blessed John XXIII’ but ‘Saint John XXIII.’ We are
honored that this great leader and humble servant of the
Lord will be recognized as a holy man and saint. For
us, the occasion will allow us to celebrate the pope’s
legacy and find new ways to be inspired by his faith
and way of looking at service in the church.
We are not certain yet just how we will observe
this momentous event. But we want our emphasis to be
on the ways in which our parish will continue to reflect
our motto, paraphrased from Pope John’s own words,
“A community carried by God, carrying God to others.”
Watch for more details in the next couple of months.

DIFFICULT TIME OF YEAR
There are many who find this to be a difficult time of the
year. They are the ones who are acutely aware of
separations from family members, those who suffer
seasonal depression or anxiety, and those who suffered
the death of a loved one in the last year or two. In
addition, people are often anxious and discouraged when
they can’t do all they want to support their families or
help the poor.
For all who struggle at this time of year,
especially when the constant message is that you are
supposed to be ‘deliriously happy,’ we want to offer our
prayer and support. Know that you are not alone and that
people care and hold you in prayer. And, most of all,
please remember that the real understanding of Christmas
is that Jesus came to those who were down and out,
feeling lost and abandoned. He is our hope.
CONDOLENCES AND
PRAYERS
We offer our prayers and support to
the family of Kathy and Dennis
Kraynak at the death of their son George. May he
rest in the fullness of life that comes with Christ.
We also offer our prayerful thoughts and
support to Gerry Lucas and family at the death of
her husband Jerry. May he be seated at the table of
the Lord at the heavenly banquet.
GRIEVING THE LOSS OF SOMEONE?
We have a number of ‘Care Notes’ for those who are
suffering the loss of someone through death. You can
check out these Care Notes just to the south of the
gathering space in the hallway of the Parish Life
Center. Please take what you likely with read…or pass
on to those who need them.
