We may have many visitors this weekend, people who
are in the area because of local high school graduations.
Welcome to all!
One couple from out of state recently told me
that when they come to visit family, they always make
a point of joining us for Mass. I appreciated the
comment. But what they perhaps did not realize is that
their presence also enriches us.
Visitors help us become a better faith
community. They keep us open and accepting,
welcoming and invigorated. We are blessed when
others come and pray with us. A parish that makes
room for others is more likely to flourish in the
Christian spirit of hospitality.

Pastor’s Note:
WE CELEBRATE Among our high school graduates,
there are some who were in the fourth
grade when our parish was begun.
They have been part of Blessed John
XXIII for eight years. Others among the graduates joined
the parish in subsequent years. All have become a very
important part of our parish!
Almost everything that can be said to graduates
has already been said during Commencement addresses.
So I will only share one point. That is that we as a parish
are celebrating with you graduates during this important
time.
Certainly, we know that parents and grandparents
are proud of their family members who receive diplomas.
Graduation is a big deal, and it should be observed as
such!
What the graduates may not know is that the rest
of the community also supports them. Graduates, we care
about you and we rejoice when you do well. We love to
see requirements accomplished and hurdles crossed over.
And we also love to hear about your dreams and hopes
for the future.
I took a few moments to look back at my
graduation. I don’t remember the speeches but I do recall
the feeling of reaching a milestone. Mostly, though, I
realize that the world today is truly different from the
world of 1965, when I graduated. Almost everything
about the country, the church, my family, and my own
sense of self has transformed in some way since then.
Many of the changes were by choice and very good.
Some were brought upon me and the rest of the world.
And some changes have been hard to deal with.
No one knows what the world will look like for
you graduates as you travel into the future. But please
remember that you are not traveling alone. You have our
love and our support.
MASSES THIS WEEK
Please note that there will not be a 9:00 a.m. Mass on
Wednesday of this week. On Friday, June 2, we will
have a 10:00 a.m. Mass at Portage Valley Nursing
Home, Pemberville Rd. Join us if you can.
![Page 3: ARISH TAFF Michael Puppos Fr. Herb Weberstorage.cloversites.com/blessedjohnxxiii/documents/... · 2013. 6. 3. · Graduation is a big deal, and it should be observed as such! What](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060710/60766ed2cc518c540b676793/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Our Sunday offering last weekend was $ . Thank you
very much. As summer comes upon us and people are
on the road many weekends, please remember to find
ways to support your parish. Thank you.
GIVING THROUGH DIRECT DEPOSIT
You can give to the church through direct deposit,
indicating how much you want to give weekly or
monthly. Please complete one of the forms found in the
magazine rack in the parish hallway and turn it in to the
parish office along with a voided check, needed for
routing purposes.
HAITI RESPONSE
Thank you for helping our parish
“Dining for Women” Haitian project a
HUGE success! You were challenged
to donate at least 200 onesies and
receiving blankets along with other
items for St. Therese Hospital in Hinche, Haiti. Your
response and support was overwhelming! Close to 2000
onesies, receiving blankets and cloth diapers were
donated along with innumerable sheets, towels and wash
cloths!
In addition your generous monetary donations
total $1706.00!! The money will be used to ship 50-
pound parcels of donated items to American volunteers
from ‘Midwives For Haiti,’ who will be traveling to Haiti.
They will take the parcel as extra baggage on their flight
to Haiti, and we will also be paying the extra baggage fee.
After a 2½ hour ride in the back of M4H's pick-up truck,
the midwife volunteer and the parcel will finally be in
good hands at St. Therese Hospital in Hinche, Haiti. This
is virtually the only way to get the items there safely. In
the Creole language of Haiti, "MESI AMPIL"! (Thank
you, very much!)

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
THINK ABOUT THE
EUCHARIST When we use the word ‘Eucharist,’ we
sometimes refer to the entire
celebration popularly known as the
Mass. Other times Eucharist means
Communion, which is a significant part of Mass. Both
uses of the word are acceptable even though this becomes
a bit confusing.
I like thinking about Communion as part of the
entire Eucharistic celebration because it helps us immerse
ourselves into the whole story. As Catholics we believe
the Sunday Eucharist is the very core of who we are. All
prayer and service during the week leads us to this
communal celebration. And all that will take place,
including our decision-making and attitudes, flows from
Eucharist. Receiving Communion is a highlight of the
Mass, but makes most sense as we celebrate the entire
Mass, both the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the
Eucharist.
That is why those who prepare to receive Holy
Communion – whether second-graders or adults – also
learn about the rest of Mass. Coming to a better
understanding of the Last Supper and Jesus’ entire
ministry, leads us to a fuller appreciation for this mystery
we celebrate.
As we are invited to the Eucharistic table, we are
truly invited to enter into the mystery of Jesus’ own life
and all that he is about. As Jesus loves others, we are
called to love in the same way. Truly the Lord is to be
part of our lives. St. Paul said, “It is no longer I that lives
but Christ lives in me.” (Gal2:20) That still takes place.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS RENEWAL
Today is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.
This is also the year when we re-commission our
Eucharistic Ministers at all Masses. May these men and
women serve the entire parish and through this ministry
come closer to the Lord in the Eucharist.
WHILE ON THE ROAD
As you are traveling this summer, please
check with www.masstimes.org. You will
be able to find the Catholic Church closest
to you, the times for Mass, and even
driving directions. Many parishioners enjoy talking about
their visits to other churches, so please don’t hesitate to
let us know about your experiences.
.
CCMT
We welcome Jeanie Hayward and Eric Stockard this
weekend as they share a few thoughts after Communion
at each Mass on the Central City Ministry of our
Diocese. In the past our parish has become quite
supportive of CCMT. Thanks for giving them your
attention and supporting CCMT in any way you can.
DO YOU WANT A MID-WEEK PICKER-
UPPER? Sometimes the week is long between Sunday and
Sunday. Many people appreciate what we call the “Mid-
Week Meditation.” It is a brief opportunity for people to
turn their attention to faith, especially experienced
through normal, daily events.
To add your name to the list, please go to
www.flocknote.com/blessedjohn. There you can register
(free of charge) and indicate how you want to receive
messages from Blessed John, either as email or on your
mobile device. Then subscribe to ‘Mid-Week
Meditation.’ Fr. Herb writes these brief reminders of faith
seen through everyday life. You can enjoy them and re-
RCIA FOR YOU?
We have already been contacted by
several future candidates for RCIA, which
will be starting up again in September. Is
this for you, too? Last year we had several summer
sessions for those who had expressed interest, so please
start thinking about this step as you explore where God is
calling you.
TIME TO REGISTER?
There are many who come here on a regular basis. If that
includes you and you have not yet registered as a
parishioner, we invite you to do so. (Registration forms
can be found in the Magazine Rack and on the parish
website.)
Why register? First of all, it helps us get to know
you. Secondly, when people register, they make a more
sincere commitment to their own faith. And as they claim
this parish as their own, they invest themselves more. We
want you to really be part of the parish family. Thank
you.
