TERMINOLOGY - HARDWARE VS SOFTWARE
Hardware – Definition:Any part of a computer that you can physically touch
Software – Definition:Programs installed into the computer. Cannot be physically
touched other than the disk you may have used to install the program. But once it is installed, it is just a set of instructions in your computer to carry out a predetermined task. Example: the software program Word will allow you to create a letter.
COMPUTER HARDWARE
Why is this important to know:
• Talk effectively with a computer repair tech.
• Know what you are purchasing in your next computer.
TYPES OF COMPUTERSDESKTOP Also called a Tower. All parts are separate pieces, upgradable.
ALL-IN-ONE DESKTOPThe computer is built-in behind the monitor. Most All-in-One units have a touch screen, rarely upgradable.
LAPTOPThe attached base contains the keyboard, mouse pad, and computer.
Typical screen size is between 15” to 21”. May be a touch screen.
TABLETS
Screen and computer in one.
Some offer a detachable keyboard.
Designed for Internet and email. No CD Rom Drive.
All are touch screens.
MONITOR
The screen displays what the computer is doing. Touch screen monitors recognize a finger touch on the screen the same way a mouse is used.
KEYBOARD & MOUSE
Both devices input
commands and information
into the computer.
MOTHERBOARD
All parts of the
computer are attached
to the Motherboard.
CPU – Central Processing Unit
This computer chip is responsible for interpreting all the input and converting it to output.
Input = keyboard, mouse clicks, screen touches, USB files, and downloads.
Output = images on your screen, printed pages,Sounds, file uploads.
HARD DRIVE The “brain” – Long term memory
Storage of installed software Apps and data created in the Apps.

RAM
RAM allows the computer to multi-task. The
more RAM, the better your computer can
multi-task and the faster it will perform.
Nothing is permanently stored in RAM.
Randomly Accessed Memories“short term memory”
CD/DVD Drive and USB Key
CD/DVD: Can install programs or files,
and save files for storage.
USB KEY – (Memory Key, Thumb Drive)
Most commonly used for picture and
document file storage, and to transport
files from one computer to another.
VIDEO CARD
Converts the computer
information into a viewable
image and displays in on your
monitor (screen).
Responsible for all sounds that
the computer produces (music,
audio portion of movies or
videos, computer sounds).

We will be discussing several terms in class. I will provide detailed explanations of any term that is not common language.
Don’t worry – by the end of this class you will have added several GEEK words to your vocabulary.
BASIC PC KEYBOARD LAYOUT
Text Keyboard Commands
SHIFT – Capital Letters & characters
CAPS LOCK – On/Off – All Capitals
BACKSPACE - erases to the left
DELETE - erases to the right
HOME – takes cursor to start of line
END – takes cursor to end of the line
PGUP / PGDOWN – moves one page
TYPING KEYS: Certain keys (beyond the alphabet) are used specifically for typing text.
Combination Keyboard Commands
CTRL – to add more control to the key
ALT - to add alternative feature to the key
ESC – escape key – used to exit from a screen
WINDOWS KEY – (left of the spacebar) opens the programs menu, and when used simultaneously with some letters to access special Windows 10 features.Some keys are designed to work
together with other keys to create special commands…FN - Used simultaneously with an F key to turn on a special function

NUMLOCK – ON enables the right side keys to be used as numbers, OFF enables directional keys.
Arrow Directional keys – can be used to move in the direction of the arrow, OR as video or audio control buttons.
TAB – in a text document, moves the cursor 5 spaces right, OR, on the web or in a form with boxes, TAB moves the cursor box to box.
Mouse Commands
LEFT MOUSE BUTTON one click – select the item
two clicks – open a program on the desktop or start menu
RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON one click – displays a pop-up menu
specific to what you clicked on.
You must then use the LEFT mouse button to select an item from the
pop-up menu.

Today’s class will provide you the basics to create a text document, edit, print & save it.
HOW DO I CREATE A WORDPAD DOCUMENT?
STEP ONE –OPEN THE WORDPAD APP
Option 1
LEFT CLICK on START icon
Select Windows Accessories
Select WordPad
Option 2
Type WordPad in the Search Box on Taskbar
Click the App Link in thesearch results.
When do I name my new file?
STEP TWO – name it NOW. The document is not truly a “file” until it is given a name and “saved”.
Mary likes an apple for lunch.
John likes an orange as a snack.
SAVE TIME when editing… In this lesson we will type
two brief sentences.
Next, we will move words around without
having to retype them.
o Copy-n-Pasteo Cut-n-Pasteo Click-n-Drag
Selecting words one at a time…
o Option 1- Double Click the Word
o Option 2 – using your left mouse button, click and hold it down while you drag it over the rest of the word.
Mary likes an apple for lunch.
John likes an orange as a snack.
Double Click the word “apple” to select it. Now Press CTRL X to “cut” it from the sentence.
Mary likes an for lunch.
John likes an apple orange as a snack.
Next, click your mouse in front of the word orange and press CTRL V to “paste” apple. Press your space bar to make a space between apple and orange.
Mary likes an for lunch.
John likes an apple orange as a snack.
Now do the same with “orange” to move it into the first sentence. This time use the Click & Drag technique.
Click your mouse in front of the word “orange” and drag (slide) your mouse over the entire word.
Next, press CTRL X to “cut” orange out of the sentence.
Mary likes an orange for lunch.
John likes an apple as a snack.
Next, move your mouse in front of “for” in the first sentence, and press CTRL V to paste it. Press the space bar if needed. You did it!
Mary likes an orange for lunch.
John likes an apple as a snack.
This time, let’s use CLICK& DRAG to move the words.
You can still use the DOUBLE CLICK to select the word, but this time we will DRAG it to the new location.

Let’s REVIEW…1. Use the keyboard arrow keys to move 1 letter or 1 line.2. Use CTRL and arrows keys to move 1 word or line at a time.3. Use HOME and End keys to go to beginning & end of a line.4. Use Backspace to erase the word ORANGE.5. Use CTRL Z to undo the erasure. 6. Use CTRL P to open Print Window.7. Use ALT F to open FILE MENU.
How do I save my file when done ?
If you want to replace the original document with your current version, just click FILE > SAVE, (or CTRL S), or click the Save ICON.
HOWEVER, If you want to keep more than one version of the file, you must click FILE, then SAVE AS. You will now have the opportunity to name it by a different name, such as budget20202-1 and select the desired location to save it.

Today’s class will provide you the basics to enjoy the internet and email.
INTERNET LINGO – Speak Geek
NETWORK – A group of computers connected to each other either wired or wireless
INTERNET – a network of computer hardware sharing information worldwide
WWW – World Wide Web – non-governed collection of independent websites
BROWSER – Program that allows you to view web pages (Edge, FireFox, Chrome, Safari)
SEARCH ENGINE – WEBSITE that allows you to find other websites(Google, MSN, Yahoo, Bing)
SEARCH BOX – area that you can type in the words to search for a website
DOMAIN NAME – The name of the website (cpu-onsite.com, Amazon.com, Facebook.com)
WEB SITE – One or more pages of content that are associated to one domain name
FAVORITES or BOOKMARKS – A listing of websites that you visit frequently
DOWNLOAD – To transfer a file from an internet computer to yours
What is a BROWSER?
A BROWSER is a software program that is required to translate HTML code into a viewable website.
Why can’t I use Internet Explorer?
• NEVER use Internet Explorer!
• Edge is Microsoft’snewest and most secure browser.
GOOGLE CHROME
Chrome is possibly easier to navigatefor a new user, but it intentionally records more information about how you use the web than any other browser program.
FIREFOX BENEFITS
o Unlike Google Chrome, MOZILLA FIREFOX does not share your browsing history with third parties.
o FireFox offers better privacy than Chrome.
o It is fast at loading web pages.
EDGE BENEFITS
o Works together with Cortana for Website searches and bonus Cortana Features
o Reading View – Eliminate the clutter on the website for easy reading or printing
o “write” or “draw” on the web page – save & print
What is a SEARCH ENGINE?
Search Engines are simply websites that have a listing of many other websites. GOOGLE.COM – most powerful search engine at this time
YAHOO.COM – uses the Google Search engine with ‘news’ articles and ads
MSN.COM –a news and marketing site that also allows you to search the web
BING.COM – owned by Microsoft and automatically installed in all Windows 10 computer. Works hand-in-hand with Cortana for enhanced web searches.
INTERNET SAFETY RULE #1
If a message on your screen that demands you do something such as click a link, make a phone call, or download a program…
YOU ARE BEING SCAMMED!!!
Don’t click or do ANYTHING. Don’t even click to close the window!!! PRESS YOUR POWER BUTTON FOR 15 SECONDS to safely shut down. When you turn it back on the warning will likely be gone. If not, your computer will need to be serviced by a profession to remove the infections.
INTERNET SAFETY RULE #2
o Do not click on the items on the right side of Facebook – often contain infections.
o Nothing in the world if FREE. The secret is learning what the catch is and deciding if the “FREE” thing is worth it!
INTERNET SAFETY RULE #3
Be VERY careful how you type a website name.
Hackers often create websites full of infections and name them similar to popular websites.

Be sure you are running an Anti-Virus Program, PLUS MalwareBytes Premium.

These do not require you to install or configure any software. Simply go to their website, click the link to sign up for an account, answer a few questions and you are ready to send and receive email.

To open your Gmail, click the tiled square in the upper right corner, then click Gmail icon.
The Email Basics… Think twice about whether or not the content of your email is
appropriate for virtual correspondence - once you hit Send, anyone might be able to read it.
Use a professional font, not decorative.

Why is Email Etiquette Important?
o We interact more and more with the written word.
o Without immediate feedback from the reader, it’s easy to be misunderstood.
The Subject Line
Should give your reader an idea of the content of the email
Should be very brief – 5 words or less
When changing the email subject matter, start a new message
Responding to an Email
o Respond in the same time frame you would respond to a phone call
o Be conscious of responding to the sender only or Reply to all
o Be conscious of your recipient and their schedule
o Don’t expect an immediate response
Tone of Voice
o Write in a positive tone
o Use smiles , winks ;-) and other graphical symbols only when appropriate
o Use please and thank you
Email Content Do’s
Do check your grammar and spelling – See Toolbar
Do use proper structure and layout – Paragraphs instead of one block of text.
Do be efficient - Emails that get to the point are much more effective.
Do read the email back to yourself, before you send it!
Do try to keep the email brief (one screen length)
Email Content Don’ts
Tip: Leave the TO field blank until you are ready to send it.
Don’t Use all CAPITALS – it is considered YELLING!
Don’t Leave out the message thread. Use REPLY to respond to an email
Don’t Use long sentences. It is hard to retain the meaning.
Don’t send attachments that are over 5 mb, especially pictures!
Plz Don’t Abbrvt. You are not texting. Abbreviations indicate you were in a hurry and may not have taken time to compose your message carefully.
Your Email Signature
o Identify yourself (and job title if work related)
o Include your phone number if the reply may require a lengthy response. They may preferto call you.
Sending Email Attachments
o When you are sending attachments, include in the email the filename, and what it containsAttached: “Project3Proposal.doc” with my proposal.
o Attachments often carry viruses – don’t forward attachments unless you are requested to do so by the receiving party.
SPAM – Not the stuff in the can
o Don’t send Spam (unsolicited email to a group of people)
o Don’t reply to spam – you will only trigger more spam
o Don’t Click “unsubscribe”
