Call to Worship

In the Garden of Eden, temptation arrived to disrupt our relationship with God.

Reveal yourself to us now, O God, as we face temptation.

In the face of death, we look for God.

Reveal yourself to us now, O God, as we recognize our mortality.

In the wilderness, the Israelites quarreled with each other, with Moses, and with God.

Reveal yourself to us now, O God, as we struggle.

In their mourning, Martha and Mary turned to Jesus seeking comfort and hope.

Reveal yourself to us now, O God, as we look for hope.

Jesus rode through the streets of Jerusalem as the crowd cheered and death awaited.

Reveal yourself to us now, O God, as we seek your Son Jesus Christ.

our fear that quickly becomes self-centeredness and call us to following Christ into our

broken and hurting world. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen (Time of silent

GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

286Breathe on Me, Breath of God

In both Hebrew and Greek, the words for “spirit” can equally well be translated as “breath” or “wind,” so itis very appropriate to address the Holy Spirit as the “Breath of God.” This tune by an English organist hasbecome the customary one in North American hymnals.

Prelude

Opening Prayer Lisa Patterson

*Hymn 1 Holy, Holy Holy! Lord God Almighty! NICAEA

Prayer of Confession (unison)

O Lord, if you held our sin against us, who could live, who could stand? We seem to

have more faith in death than hope in your promise of life. We face adversity and

quickly abandon the hungry, sick, and dying, even as we care for ourselves. Forgive us

our fear that quickly becomes self-centeredness and call us to following Christ into our

broken and hurting world. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen (Time of silent

confession).

Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

The Call to Faithfulness Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is

this: when God is revealed, we will be like God, for we will see God as God is. And all who have this

hope in God purify themselves, just as God is pure.

*Sung Response Hymn 585 Glory to God, glory to God, glory in the highest! Glory to God, glory to God, glory to Christ Jesus!

Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Spirit! To God be glory forever! To God be glory forever!

Prelude

Alleluia, Amen! Alleluia, Amen! Alleluia, Amen Alleluia, Amen! Alleluia, Amen! Alleluia, Amen!
