DEVELOPMENT REPACKAGED: CHINESE INITIATIVES IN AFRICA Description: This panel explores the logics and motivations surrounding China's development projects in Africa, their relation to broader economic trends globally, and the possible impacts they can have on local communities.

Ilan Kapoor is Professor of Critical Development Studies at the Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University. He teaches in the areas of global development and environmental politics, and his research focuses on postcolonial theory and politics, participatory development and democracy, and more recently, ideology critique. He has twenty years of experience as an international development consultant, working with a range of development agencies and NGOs, including CIDA, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, and the UNDP. He is author of The Postcolonial Politics of Development (Routledge 2008), and more recently, Celebrity Humanitarianism: The Ideology of Global Development (Routledge 2008), and more recently, Celebrity Humanitarianism: The Ideology of Global Charity (Routledge 2013).

Stephen Brown is Professor of Political Science at the University of Ottawa. His research interests include foreign aid, democratization, and political violence, especially in relation to Sub-Saharan Africa. include foreign aid, democratization, and political violence, especially in relation to Sub-Saharan Africa. He has published widely on Canadian aid policy for academic and non-academic audiences, including in the Canadian Journal of Development Studies (2007), Canada Among Nations (2007 and 2013), L'aide canadienne au développement (2008), Readings in Canadian Foreign Policy: Classic Debates and New Ideas (2011) and Multilateral Development Cooperation in a Changing Global Order (2013). He is the editor of Struggling for Effectiveness: CIDA and Canadian Foreign Aid (2012) and co-editor of The Securitization of Foreign Aid and Rethinking Canadian (both volumes currently under review). He has also worked as a staff member or consultant for a number of development-related organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme, the OECD Development Assistance Committee and the International Development Research Centre.
