Team of the Week

U11C Rugby Team

The U11 Cs played in an absolute thriller against Shrewsbury House, winning by one try 50-45. The game was filled with good quality rugby and the progress the boys have made was clear to see. Defensively the tackling

was strong and we ripped the ball out of the tackle on a number of occaisions. It was really pleasing to see the boys rucking quickly and effectively to maintain possessions. Downsend went into an early lead and just after half time found themselves comfortable leaders at 35-15. But Shrewsbury House stepped up a gear and overhauled the Downsend score and went into the lead. With two minutes left Downsend trailed 40-45. At this point the drive, determination and pride the Downsend team showed was really pleasing as they put together a fantastic team try filled with good offloads, passes and footwork. In the last minute Louis H, on debut, broke the line and scored a fine individual try to win the game. Well done to all the boys for their fantastic play and hard work. In their first four matches against Aberdour, Ripley Court, Chinthurst and Newland House the ‘A’ team scored nineteen tries between them and conceded only five. This put us into a play-off against the strongest team of the other group, St George’s Windsor. This was a great test and some very impressive sevens rugby was played by both teams. At the final whistle the two sides could not be separated, the final result being 15-15. It has been great to see the boys progress with their sevens. The squad proved more organised in their defensive line in the second tournament, attacked with increased depth and speed and passed more often and at the right time. Downsend’s final try also included a great switch between Louis (who won the Sportsman award on the day) and Reiss. Special credit should go to Rory for his ten tries and being chosen as Downsend’s Player of the Day. The whole squad who turned out for both these tournaments should be congratulated for their excellent play, passion and progress.

Squad: Sonny A, Adam G, Alex W, Louis P, Tom J, Reiss C, Rory D, Jake W, Lachie T, Toby W and Jake T.

Downsend U13A Rugby Sevens The team took part in two tournaments this week. The first of these was on Wednesday at the Aldro 7's Festival with a strong group of schools taking part. The Downsend boys made a slow start playing a B team from Danes Hill. A loss to Cranmore was followed by an excellent performance against Feltonfleet which ended as a 19 -19 draw. In keeping with the running of the new festival format, the Downsend team then went on to play The New Beacon, Cumnor House and Rokeby. These were all comfortable wins under the circumstances, particularly satisfying against The New Beacon and Rokeby, overturning the results from the 13 a side season. As a result of these wins, the team won the group and the Lombardi Cup. Millfield Sevens

On Saturday, the U13 7's team went on the annual trip to the Millfield Rugby Festival, playing a number of different schools to the normal Surrey circuit. The team began really well with wins against Clifton College and Halliford but were hard pressed by a strong Millfield team in the group. In the next round of matches, the boys began by playing and winning a very competitive game against Dulwich. They then lost their way with consecutive defeats by Shrewsbury and a very strong Port Regis side. Overall, the boys should be pleased with their efforts as they are now playing with much more style, determination, speed and initiative, at times showing themselves capable of some outstanding phases of play. Well done Everyone!

Team from - Josh L (Capt), Leyton T, Daniel G, Billy P, Jake B, Oliver C-W, James M, Toby R, Yuvi S, Fraser L and Oliver C.

U7A's reach two finals in two weeks - winning the Parkside Football Tournament! Having lost in the final to Parkside last Saturday at the Hawthorn Tournament, I was delighted with the team's progress; winning the event without conceding a goal in normal play! Having won their group comfortably they proceeded to claim victory of two penalty shootouts in the quarter final and semi-finals. In both matches against Prior Prep and Shrewsbury Lodge, having dominated play, we were unable to score in normal time. Well done to Henry J in goal and to our penalty takers who were certainly more composed than the coaches and spectators!

In the final we played Rokeby who we had beaten in our group stage one nil. As always revenge was on the cards, but thankfully we continued to play super football and maintained position brilliantly. Another penalty in normal time was awarded and Kian Buckley scored with a thunderbolt! Great work from everyone, but particularly Sebastian P in defence in the final game. This is the first time Downsend have won the Parkside tournament and all the boys should be incredibly proud! Thanks as always to our amazing spectators and to Mr Evans and Mr Thomson for their hard work throughout the year!

Swimming

Guildford High School Invitational Gala – 13 March 2017

On Monday a team of swimmers headed off to compete in the annual invitational gala at GHS. The event consisted of individual races and relays to culminate in an overall team score. With heats and finals in all events we arrived prepared with a determined team looking to qualify for as many finals as possible. Potentially some swimmers could swim in 6 races that afternoon!

After some fantastic swims from all our individuals in both year groups a significant number had qualified for the finals. Next up were the relay events and yet again Downsend proved to be dominant in these events with all three out of the four teams going through to the finals.

We knew we were in a solid position going in to the finals of both the individuals and relays but it was now we now needed to start the points scoring! The girls displayed some fantastic swimming and great team work and encouragement. Once all the swimming was finished the girls headed up to teas and for the presentations. With the points doubled in the relays we were unsure of where we would finish as a team. The U9 team finished in a fantastic =6th place (out of 11 schools competing) and the U11 team narrowly missed out on medals finishing in =4th place.

Football Well done to Ralphie A, Alex D, Luca CS, Charlie K and Louie L, as members of the Ashtead FC Under 9 team, for winning a very exciting and tense semi-final match in the Epsom & Ewell Youth League Presidents Cup.

Good luck to the boys who now play in the cup final on Saturday 22nd April.

Jake W and Rory D in Year 6 played for their football team, Bookham Colts Eagles U11s, and won their President’s Cup semi-final on Saturday against Whyteleafe FC. This is the top level cup in the Epsom and Ewell Youth League, the largest local league. They are also going strong at the top of the First Division. After going 3-0 up, Bookham were pegged back to 3-3 before winning in a penalty shootout. Jake was man of the match, after a great goalkeeping performance during the match and then two outstanding saves in the shootout. Well done and good luck for the final on 29 April.
