How would you define ‘family’? Who would you say is in your family? The increasingtrends toward cohabitation, same-sex couplehood, divorce, remarriage and singlehoodhave led to the emergence of diverse family patterns and changes in family life insocieties in many parts of the globe. This Reading Group aims to reflect on thedefinition of the traditional nuclear family consisting heterosexual married parents andtheir biological children, as well as examine some of the shifts in family life by takingstock of various configurations of familial relationships, using Singapore as a case-study. In so doing, it seeks to investigate some of the public policy and on-the-groundchallenges in addressing these changing experiences of family within society.

Street art is among the biggest cohesive art movementsexploding all around the world today. From urban graffiti toaward-winning commissioned pieces, street art has broughtaesthetics out of private galleries and museums into the publicdomain to amuse and disturb. The latest incarnation, 3Dinteractive art, is being fuelled by the boom in internationaltravel, the ubiquity of smartphones (and smart cameras), andthe connectivity of social media. This Reading Group willprovide students with some of street art’s historical andscientific underpinnings. Students will explore some of thesocial and theoretical aspects of the movement.
