Crossroads Youth and Family Services is a network of adult, youth and family homelessness and other support and counselling services.Crossroads Youth and Family Services are located across the North-West metropolitan region and the city, with the main office being located at 2/828 Sydney Road, Coburg North.

Research ProjectsCurrent Research Projects Include:

Outer North Project – to be undertaken in Partnership with Melbourne Uni the project aims to address emerging issues in communities in the Northern growth corridors of Metropolitan Melbourne by contributing to knowledge around the impact of demographic change in local areas and building a picture of some of the common themes which contribute to social cohesion and interconnection between the disparate communities.

Homeless Children – a study, in partnership with Council to Homeless People that explores the impact of homelessness on children through interviews with children.

Evidence-Informed Case Management Practice for Homeless Persons Agencies – a study that seeks to provide a contemporary and evidence informed insight into case management practices in the homelessness sector. This project is an AHURI research project managed by Hanover.

Community DevelopmentCommunity Development @ Crossroads has

involved taking a leading role in promoting the use of Community development strategies across Melbourne Central Division Networks.

Specifically this has included:- participation in the development and delivery of

Community Development training with Westcare the promotion of CD initiatives/partnerships between

Crossroads and local corps including, Preston & Plenty Valley community inclusion project & Stepping Stones project

participation in Whittlesea Community Futures Project the development of a research partnership with

University of Melbourne in the Social investment

Gardening for Growth

A community gardening program that currently has 5 community gardens at the Plenty Valley Salvation Army Corps, Mater St Garden in Collingwood and smaller gardens at the Anchorage Men’s Hostel, The Bridge in St Kilda, and Westcare VCAL Program in Sunshine. The Gardens aim to engage the local community and clients of The Salvation Army. The program has evolved to incorporate program development, new garden construction, community education, promotion of sustainable gardening, and community development.

Admin Support

The crossroads Administration Team currently consists of a Senior Operational Support Manager, an Operational Support Manager, Administration Coordinator and one Administration Support Worker located at the Crossroads North Coburg site. Two other Administration personnel work offsite, one at Family Housing and Support and the other situated with the Melbourne Counselling Service in Bourke Street.The Senior Operational Support Manager and the Operational Support Manager consult with Crossroads Program Managers in regard to budget preparation and the financial monitoring of all program areas.The Crossroads Administration Team are responsible for a number of functions across the network including the payment of all accounts, staff personnel records, property and vehicle matters etc to name a few and ensure all administration functions comply with the official THQ & DHQ processes.

Network Tenancy & Property

Crossroads Y&FS is accommodates, family housing, family violence and youth homeless program clients in properties that the Salvation army owns and Crossroads Manages. This position provides site, property and tenancy management for clients who are accommodated in our properties. Some duties include:

Coordinating repairs and maintaining the properties to a high standard Ensuring that relevant legislation is adhered to including the Residential

Tenancy Act. Furnish properties to the required standard and within budget Complete tenancy agreements, condition reports and other documentation

related to tenants moving into and out of a property Monitor collection of rent

A Tenancy and Property management procedure is available on the Crossroads IntraNet and incudes all the forms, procedures and links to relevant standards and legislation.

Network Chaplaincy Services

The Salvation Army is committed to providing a holistic response (physical, social, emotional and spiritual) to individual needs. Spiritual support is provided by our chaplaincy services. Salvation Army Chaplains are skilled listeners who respect the religious traditions of those who seek help.Chaplains can work with staff and clients.The highest level of professional confidentiality can be expected when you speak to a chaplain.

Chaplains are here to provide:Someone to talk to when you are upset, worried or anxiousSupport in times of crisisAn advocate when you need itA point of contact when you don’t know who to talk toCelebrant services for weddings, funerals and other significant life events.

Relationship to Rest of The Salvation Army

Crossroads Youth and Family Services is a network of programs within the Melbourne Central Division of the Salvation Army’s Australian Southern Territory. The Salvation Army’s Australian Southern Territory includes Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Territorial Headquarters (THQ) is based at Mont Albert.

Melbourne Central Division (MCD) covers the area of Metropolitan Melbourne which is west of Glenferrie Road.Divisional Headquarters is located at 1/828 Sydney Road North Coburg.Melbourne Central Division is led by the Divisional Commander.

History of Crossroads

Crossroads began in 1978 with the development of a youth refuge (Fitzroy Homeless Youth Program-Tranmere Street refuge). From the refuge Crossroads pioneered responses in crisis care and referral, employment opportunities and supported accommodation to homeless people. These programs further evolved throughout the 80’s and into the 90’s.In 1997 Crossroads Housing and Support Network split to become a number of networks, some of which are still in existence; e.g. the St Kilda Crisis Centre and Adult Services.

Fitzroy Homeless Youth Program (Tranmere Street refuge), was established in 1978.TSAY (Transitional Supported Accommodation for Youth) was established in 1979. Family Housing was established in 1992. Crossroads Jacana commenced operation in 1995Crossroads Currawong Service was established in 1995.Mary Anderson Family Violence Service originated from Hope Hall,established in 1887, as the original Salvation Army Women’s shelter. It evolved into Mary Anderson Lodge (a refuge) and in 2005 to it’s present form – a dispersed unit refuge and outreach Family Violence Service for women and their children.
