The start of the school year has been very busy, with many activities throughout thedistrict. I hope you have had the opportuni-ty to attend one of the extracurricular eventsthis fall. Did you know that residents of ourschool district who are at least 65 years oldare eligible for a free all-sports pass? This isone of the many ways we thank our seniorresidents for their support of our school sys-tem. If you have not received a pass yet, seeMr. Altimus in the Athletic Director’s of-fice. He is usually available from 12:00-2:30 each afternoon. The pass is good foradmission to all home junior high and high
school athletic events.
We will also be thanking our senior resi-dents with a breakfast and entertainment program on October 22 at 8:15 in the au-diteria. All district residents, age 65 andolder are invited to join us for the 90 minute program. In addition to the breakfast, Dr.Miller will have a brief presentation regard-ing updates to our school facility. Themorning program will conclude with perfor-mances by our high school band and showchoir. Reservations are required and may bemade by calling 419-258-5421, extension2300 by October 16.
A big thank you to parents and students for
your cooperation with the change to the drop-off and pick-up of students around the largecircle drive. The change has led to a muchsafer and smoother flow of students in andout of our school facility. Please continue tofollow the directions of the aides supervisingthe circle drive and pull ahead as far as pos-sible prior to letting your child out of thevehicle or picking up your child. Using theentire circle drive will allow us to unloadand load children more efficiently. If possi- ble, have your child get in and out of the caron the sidewalk side. If you do not use thecircle drive, please park your car and comeup on the sidewalk with your child in themorning or to meet them at the sidewalk inthe afternoon. Elementary students are notallowed to walk through the parking lot bythemselves to get in a waiting car.
Our first quarter will end on October 16. Iencourage all parents or guardians to attendParent-Teacher Conferences. Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Oc-tober 27 and November 5 from 4:00-7:30.We will also have conferences in the spring.Communication between school and home isvital for the success of our students.
A reminder that our next Waiver Day In-service for staff is scheduled for Monday,October 19. There will be no school forstudents that day.

NOTICE: BOARD MEETING CHANGE
The October 15 Board of Education meet-ing will begin at 5:00 p.m. this month.
MR. BUTE—HS/MS PRINCIPAL
I want to thank the students, staff and com-munity members for the great start to our2015-2016 school year. As we move intoOctober, it is difficult to believe that we areapproaching the end of our first grading pe-riod (Oct. 16). Grade cards will be distribut-ed to the students during the week of Octo- ber 19-23.
NHS— The National Honor Society induc-tion ceremony will be held on Sunday, Octo- ber 11 at 2:00 in the auditeria. Placement inthe NHS is a prestigious honor that you and
your family can be extremely proud of. Iinvite the community and parents to attendand honor these and current NHS members.
FEES— Being beyond the midterm of thefirst grading period, I would like to empha-size the importance of paying for your son’s/daughter’s school fees. If you are unable to pay the entire amount at once, please contactthe school and set up a payment plan so thedebt will be cleared by the end of the 2015-2016 school year.
OGT Retakes —Any junior or senior whohasn’t passed all five sections of the OhioGraduation Test (Reading, Mathematics,Writing, Science, and Social Studies) will
take the particular test(s) during the week ofOctober 26-30. The student is responsiblefor being in attendance for the assigneddates. We have spoken with those studentsand assigned them a content teacher to pro-vide support in preparing for the contenttest. Please be in communication with yourstudent about his/her progress in preparingfor success on the test.
COMMUNICATION —Again this year weemphasize the importance of communication between the community and school. I en-courage the staff to contact at least two par-ents each week. I extend the encouragementto the community as well. Effective com-munication between community and school
plays a vital role in our district’s continualgrowth philosophy.
MR. MANZ—ELEMENTARY
As we pass the midterm of the first grading period, it is time to look ahead to many ac-tivities coming up in the near future. Theend of the first 9-weeks will be on October16. We would like to remind you that youneed to have at least $16.25 of your fees paid in order to receive your student’s reportcard. You may stop in the office to pay this portion, or pay the full amount of $65.
3GRG— We have recently completed ourscreening of students in K-3 in accordance
with the 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee(3GRG). This law requires the school toinform parents in writing if their child is indanger of not being “on-track” to be able toread at a third grade level by the end of theirthird grade year. If this is found to be thecase, these “not-on-track” students will re-ceive targeted intervention during their K-3grade years to help them reach this goal. For more information about this law, onecan go to the Ohio Department of Educationwebsite and click on the 3rd Grade ReadingGuarantee link.
DROP-OFF/PICK-UP— I would like toremind you of a couple of changes that wereimplemented with student drop-off and pick-up. In the morning when dropping off yourstudent(s), please pull forward as far as pos-sible so that we can fit more cars in the cir-cle drive, so we do not have cars waiting onthe road. When picking your students up,please do not park your car in the circledrive and walk to the doors to get yourstudent(s). If you want to walk up and pickup your child at the door, please park in the parking lot. If you park in the circle driveand get out, cars have to drive around you, which is a dangerous situation for your chil-dren. Please stay in your vehicle and pullahead when possible.
PTO DELIVERY— The PTO fundraiser pickup is Wednesday, September 30 from3:00-5:00. Please be prompt, or have ar-rangements made to pick up your sold items. All items are frozen and need to be put backin a freezer as soon as possible.
COMMUNICATION— Finally, I wouldlike to encourage you to continue to keep incontact with staff regarding questions orconcerns that you may have. Maintaining astrong line of communication is the first stepin helping to address problems or issues thatmay arise. I would discourage just keepingconcerns or problems to yourself, or onlydiscussing these with other parents/
community members. We at the schoolneed to be able to address issues that mayarise, and we cannot do this if we are notinformed accordingly. We need to worktogether to gather all of the facts so the situ-ation can be resolved in the correct manner. This contact can be achieved through phonecalls, emails, and/or parent teacher confer-ences that are coming up at the end of Octo- ber and beginning of November. Thank youfor your consideration in this matter, and welook forward to continued cooperation tomake this school year the best it can be.

Wewant them to take pride in their accomplishments. We have a school-wide assembly with a specialacknowledgement to each student’s achievement.John Gardner said, “Excellence is doing ordinarythings extraordinarily well.” Excellent things are
happening at Paulding Elementary and I am proudto be a small part of the process.
The importance of student recognition is valuedhere at Paulding Elementary. There is a connec-tion between positive student behavior and posi-tive student achievement. We are proud to recog-nize our children for their positive choices. Eachmonth we choose a Student of the Month fromeach homeroom class. There is a bulletin boardwith the child’s picture from each homeroom. Wehost a breakfast for them to enjoy with the Princi- pal. The student is honored at this breakfast with acertificate and treat. Everyone leaves smiling
with more motivation to continuing being that positive role model within our school community. We here at Paulding Elementary realize that char-acter education starts at home, but we are an ex-tension of the home, so we want to put supports in place to remind children of those positive charac-ter traits that help make our community a great place to be.
Oakwood Elementary-Jennifer ManzHello from Oakwood Elementary on a picture per-fect autumn day!! It is hard to believe 1st quarter progress reports will be going home with studentstoday (9/22). I spoke to the students about howimportant it is for them to review these reportswith their parents so they know what goals to setfor themselves for the remainder of the first quar-ter.One of the routines that teachers have been estab-lishing with students is what is expected of themin regards to homework. Students at all gradelevels have some form of homework throughout
the week. Homework is generally designed to practice skills being introduced in the classroom. It is not meant to be a frustration to students or parents; and if your child continually has difficul-ty completing assigned tasks, please contact theclassroom teacher to share what you are observingat home. Together, you can clarify expectationsand brainstorm ways to make things go moresmoothly. In mid-September, we observed Safe SchoolsWeek and practiced all of our Safety Drills. I amvery impressed with how seriously students tookthese drills and with the leadership displayed byour older students. While we hope we never haveto conduct any of our Safe School practices in areal emergency, it is good to know a workable plan is in place and is understood by staff and stu-dents.Last spring the teachers at Oakwood Elementarywere offered the opportunity to apply for CooperFamily Foundation Education Grants. In early
September, we learned the following teacherswere awarded their grants: Deedi Miller, ShelleyShinners, Kylee Miller, Kelly Snyder, Beth Nor- beck, Nancy Wehrkamp, Erin Schroeder, JillHohlbein, Caroline Arend, Sharyn March, andElizabeth Frankart. Over $4900 was awarded tothese teachers to purchase learning materials fortheir classrooms. We owe a special “thank you”to the Cooper Family. Their generosity this yearand in years past have allowed us to provide manyextra classroom experiences and interventions forour students. As always, we need and appreciate the support ofour whole community to make Oakwood Elemen-tary a great place to learn and grow – thank youfor being there for us!
Middle School-Chris EtzlerHello from Paulding Middle School. This schoolyear has gotten off to a very good start. I wish toTHANK everyone for all of their efforts in gettingus off on the right foot. I hope the entire year
goes as smoothly as the first few weeks. If thathappens, we will be in for a fantastic year. You should have received your student’s first nineweeks mid-term report. They were sent homewith your student on September22nd. PLEASE look these over very careful-ly. This is a prime time to examine these reportsto determine just how your child has started theyear academically. If all is going great - fantas-tic. If you notice that the grades are not wherethey should be at this time, please contact yourchild's teacher to discuss how to improve their performance. Here are just a couple of quick, helpful hints to look for if they are having a diffi-cult time: Are all of their assignments being writ-ten down in their agenda? Is the work they areturning in acceptable, grade level work? Is theirwork getting returned to the teacher finished andon time? Are they taking the time to properlystudy for tests and exams? Are they taking theirresponsibility of school seriously? All of these
hints are important steps for your child to be suc-cessful in school. The first nine weeks grading period ends on October 23rd. Grade cards will bemailed home on October 28th.On September 10, our students attended an assem- bly by Camfel Productions titled ‘Be Amazing’.It was a very positive experience for our students, and it challenged our students that in everythingthey do, each and every day, their goal should beto ‘Be Amazing’. I received many positive com-ments from students and staff after the presenta-tion.Just a reminder that breakfast is offered before thestart of the school day. Students have time to eattheir breakfast in the Auditeria before they reportto first period class. The week of September 14-18 was Safe SchoolsWeek. We practiced the following safety drills sowe will be fully prepared for emergencies shouldthey occur: Fire Drill, Tornado Drill, A.L.I.C.E.Evacuation Drill, and a Planned EvacuationDrill. The staff and students did a fantastic job of
taking these drills very seriously and I was very proud of them.

Faculty, sta, and students at all three WayneTrace Local School buildings connue to workhard everyday. Educang our youth is andalways will be a team eort, with connuedcooperaon and communicaon neededbetween parents and school personnel. The
more we stay informed about our children’s edu-caon, the more we can help pave the way to asuccessful school experience. As I’ve statedmany mes, feel free to frequently communicatewith your child(ren)’s teachers concerning educa-onal and co-curricular issues.
Speaking of communicaon, I strongly encour-age you to visit the school website(www.waynetrace.org) and review its newestfeature called “Who’s Telling Your Story?” Thislink is found under the “Administraon” tab andis full of great, posive stories submied by ourfaculty and sta members. So many wonderfulacvies are happening at Wayne Trace both inand out of the classroom right now, and this siteprovides a snapshot of several of these educa-onal and service-minded acvies. A hugethank you goes out to all of the teachers and stamembers who have submied arcles so far.
Concerning the world of transportaon, fall isright around the corner, signifying the beginningof shorter days and longer nights. As we con-nue to make safety a high priority, parents areencouraged to remind their student-drivers touse the “defensive approach” when operang amotor vehicle. As you’re well aware by now, texng while driving is a violaon in the state ofOhio, and drivers under the age of eighteen canbe pulled over simply for this violaon. Parentsare highly encouraged to remind their student -drivers of the dangers involved in driving at nightor in the early morning, especially when otheryoung people are also in the vehicle. Texts canand should wait. Everyone plays a part in gengstudents to and from school safely.
Our teaching sta has several new teachersthis year. As part of being an entry-level teacher, the Ohio Department of Educaon has outlined a“Teacher-Mentor Program.” Experienced teach-
ers work with inexperienced, developing teach-ers right in the classroom of the new teachers. As part of this program, experienced teachersmay videotape the new teachers presenng alesson to students. Noce: If you do not wantyour child to appear in any of these condenalvideos of new teachers, contact your child(ren)’sbuilding principal(s) in wring, stang that youdo not want your child to appear in a video. Ifwe do not hear from you within a reasonableamount of me, then we will consider it accepta-ble for your child(ren) to appear in these videos. Please understand: These videos are completelycondenal, with the sole purpose of the videosbeing to help inexperienced teachers improve, not to record the behavior of the students.
The JH/HS students are currently in the midstof another thrilling Homecoming week with“Spirit Week” planned for September 28-October3. As part of this much-ancipated week of fun
acvies, our students will parcipate in theannual bon re on Thursday evening, the varsityfootball game versus Holgate on Friday evening, and the semi-formal dance on Saturday night. Many thanks go out to our HS student council, under the direcon of Mrs. Annee Sinn, forcoordinang many extra-curricular events relatedto the annual Homecoming ceremony.
In school calendar news, please be remindedthat school will operate on a two-hour delay onFriday, October 9 for the purpose of a teacherin-service. We also have two-hour delaysplanned for in-services on November 13, Decem-ber 11, January 15, February 12, March 11, andApril 22. Buses will run two hours late on each ofthese Fridays with school starng two hours laterthan the normal start-me. We appreciate thecooperaon from our parents/guardians as weuse this me to conduct building-level iniavesthat will beer prepare our students for academ-
ic success. A big thank you goes out to everyone who
played a role in and/or aended the 2015 WayneTrace Sta Hall of Fame ceremony. This year’sinductees were Mr. Robert Mutschelknaus andMr. Larry Pressler. We would also like to expressour gratude to the members of the communitywho nominate former sta members for thisaward, as inducng our best faculty and stawould not be possible without those people whomake the nominaons.
Finally, please be aware of our annual parent-teacher conferences, scheduled for October 28-29. But also be aware that you may schedulemes to meet with your child(ren)’s teachers atany me during the school year, not just duringthe scheduled, annual conferences.
As always, if you have quesons or concernsabout your child’s educaonal experience atWayne Trace, feel free to contact your buildingprincipal or superintendent.
