Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.
Yo soy la esclava del Señor; Que se cumpla en mi lo que has dicho.
Soon to be Bishop McKnight asks each of us to find personal ways we might reach out to serve the physical and spiritual needs of the communities where we live and serve. The call reminded me of the misión, simple yet profound, our Blessed Mother asked of Juan Diego. There was no way Juan could ever understand the immense results of his simple “yes” to Mary. We too, cannot know the size of the task. nor the result achieved, but that should never limit our desire to answer “yes” to the call to be of service.

Dear Friends in parishes of the Jefferson City Diocese - We've had a busy fall thus far. Lots of activi-ty at the Abbey Guest Center. Here are three more retreats and days of reflection that we're offering dur-ing November and December. God's blessings to you all. Abbey Guest Center, Conception, MO 64433, 660 944-2809; email: [email protected]; Site: www.conceptionabbey.org/guests
December 30-Jan 1 Annual New Year’s Retreat Begin the New Year in prayer and reflection. Staff and Monks will look forward to the feast of the Epiphany—a reflection upon what the Lord has made known to us and how we will reflect that in our daily lives. Take time to bring in the New Year with more than resolutions. How do we make what the Lord has manifested in our lives become the gifts we offer to others? We will also offer special sessions and handouts in Spanish. Room/Meal/Director fees: $180 single room; $300 double room ($150 each)
All our retreats and days of recollection provide a setting for quiet reflection, personal prayer and relaxa-tion along with the opportunity to join the monastic community for prayer and Eucharist. Day programs can include overnight accommodations upon request.
Parish Nursing Program... The Faith Based Health Ministry Network (a program sponsored by Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri) will sponsor a parish nursing course in spring, 2018. Get to Mass early; don't calculate how late you can be, Pope says By Editor, Catholic News Service, December 20, 2017
(CNS) Don't be late for Mass believing the introductory rites do not matter, Pope Francis told visi-
tors. The words and gestures that open the celebration help the faithful come together as one and pre-
pare them to listen to the Word of God and celebrate the Eucharist worthily, he said. "It is not a good
habit to be looking at the clock" and calculating how much of the beginning of Mass would be OK to
miss and still fulfill one's obligation, he said. Get to Mass early, not late, he said, because it is during
the introductory rites that "we begin to adore God as a community" and "to prepare the heart for this
celebration with the community. Understanding these holy signs is necessary to experience the Mass
and all of its beauty," the Pope said.
The gestures that accompany the Mass "risk going unnoticed," he said, but they "are very signifi-
cant because they express from the start that the Mass is an encounter of love with Christ," who offers
his body on the cross, becoming victim and priest. After the entrance, the celebrant bows and kisses
the altar as an expression of veneration because the altar is a symbol of Christ, the pope said.
Everyone gathers around the altar, "not to look at each other. No. But to look at Christ," who is at the
center of the community — not far away.
With the sign of the cross, the priest and assembly recognize the liturgy is carried out "in the name
of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." It is a sign of the mystery of the Trinity, of Christ's
loving sacrifice and resurrection, and of each person's baptism, he said. Pope Francis again urged par-
ents and grandparents to teach children from a very young age how to make the sign of the cross
properly and what it means. He said so often kids are just gesturing "a picture of something" that is
definitely not a cross. "Explain to them that they will have Jesus' cross as protection," he added.
The celebrant will then greet the assembly, for example, with "The Lord be with you," and the
assembly's response, "And with your spirit," shows the community of God in dialogue, he said. "We
are entering into a 'symphony,' " he said, "in which different tones of voices resound, including mo-
ments of silence, with an aim of creating an 'accord' among all participants, that is, to see each other as
animated by the one Spirit and for the same purpose. One expresses in this way the common faith and
the mutual desire to be with the Lord and to live in unity with the whole community," he said.
The penitential act following the greeting invites all to recognize their sins and ask for forgiveness.
It is more than a moment of self-reflection, he said; it is "an invitation to admit that one is a sinner
with humility and sincerity, like the publican at the temple. The first thing we have to do is recognize
our situations of death in order to be able to rise up with him toward a new life."

We lift up to the Lord in
prayer all those who enter the
eternal peace of Christ, espe-
cially Kerry, the son of Mari-
lyn O’Toole . For all the sick,
especially Clark and Melba
Hackney, may the promise and the gift of the peace of Christ fill their hearts
and minds, and may almighty God always provide their every need. We pray
too, for those who struggle with grief or addictions and those who labor to
provide our well being and freedom especially first responders and military,
and for those separated from their loved ones and family.

Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.
As the ordination of our new bishop draws near, my thoughts turn to ways we of Saint Mary might continue to build up the kingdom of God. Soon to be Bishop McKnight asks each of us to find personal ways we might reach out to serve the phy-sical and spiritual needs of the communi-ties where we live and serve. The call reminded me of the misión, simple yet profound, our Blessed Mother asked of Juan Diego. There was no way Juan could ever understand the immense re-sults of his simple “yes” to Mary. We too, cannot know the size of the task. nor the result achieved, but that should never limit our desire to answer “yes” to the call to serve God and his creation.

(CNS) Callista L. Gingrich presented her letters of credential to Pope Fran-cis, formally assuming her duties as U.S. ambassador to the Holy See. Gingrich met privately with the pope Dec. 22 after introducing her husband, former House Speaker Newt Gin-grich, and members of her staff. Neither the Vatican nor the U.S. em-bassy provided details about their private discussion.
In a statement, the embassy said, "Ambassador Gingrich looks forward to working with the Holy See to de-fend human rights, advance religious freedom, combat human trafficking and to seek peaceful solutions to cri-ses around the world." But in the weeks before her papal audience, Pope Francis and U.S. Pres-ident Donald Trump had very public
disagreements on other issues. Pope Francis had asked Trump to respect the "status quo" of Jerusalem by not recognizing it as the capital of Israel until the city's status was deter-mined by a peace process. Also, the Vatican expressed disap-pointment that the Trump administra-tion pulled out of the U.N. process for drafting global compacts on migration and on refugees and that the admin-
istration withdrew U.S. support for the Paris Accord on reducing climate change. Meeting Pope Fran-cis, Gingrich gave him a collection of sacred music recorded by the choir she was a long-time member of at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immacu-late Conception in
Washington, the embassy said. She also gave him a donation for the char-ity of his choice. After meeting the pope and Cardi-nal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, the new ambassador was ac-companied to St. Peter's Basilica by Msgr. Francis Kelly, a priest of the Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, and a canon of St. Peter's Basilica
