A Time, Again, to Exercise some Spiritual Muscle The etymology of the word “Lent” is inspiring … going to what we celebrate for over 40 days as a Chrisan church. Lentcomes from the old English “Lencten”, meaning, “Early Spring” or “Spring Coming”. As such, it is a special me for prayer, sacrifice, almsgiving and fasng as Scripture invites a Chrisan to live with seasons of more intense spiritu- al work, on the one hand, and mes of fesvity on the other (eg: Hebrews 12). The purpose of Lent is to have us exercise spiritual muscles, we haven’t used for awhile (a Early Spring training … if you like). The goal is to demonstrate not only to the world; but also, to actualize faith in ourselves … we can control and sacri- fice worldly desires and wants to God and for God’s sake. By doing so, we prepare for the lean mes that may present themselves in a soul’s lifeme. When I have a loss … when I experience desolaons and empness … when I am seriously hurt (or a member of the family is hurt) … when I am challenged by things of this world my pracces in Lent train me to know how temporary these situ- aons actually are. I learn I can and do endure for the sake of something greater than myself. Having Jesus as our Model and Guide at Lent, we realize as Chrisans, He is able to transfigure this world (and our lives) for the greater glory of God. When a soul prepares well: a good Lenten pracce will make for a good Holy Week celebraon. A good Holy Week cele- braon then makes for a wonder filled Easter Season. And, remembering that God will never be out done in love - I can tell you - when Easter comes around … WOW ! to fulfill the precept: “Be s-ll and know that I am God.”

Some Thoughts & Ideas for a Daily Lenten Pracce

“Be s-ll and know that I am God.” Thus does the LORD instruct us in Psalm 46,

verse 10. The s-llness to which we are called in Holy Scripture is a leAng go of ac-ons and

words that yields silence, both interior and exterior, and such silence is essen-al for every

disciple of the Lord Jesus. We need -mes of exterior silence in order to cul-vate interior

silence, and without interior silence we make it very difficult to hear the Word of God. For

this reason, silence is indispensable to authen-c and mature Chris-an faith and life.

Many Chris-an denomina-ons oCen emphasize the need for a daily “Quiet Time,”

which is accompanied by reading the Bible and keeping silent. This is nothing other than

the ancient Catholic prac-ce of lec-o divina, or divine reading, which is a medita-ve read-

ing of the Scriptures in a quiet place. Divine reading is understood to have four parts: lec-o,

medita-o, ora-o, and contempla-o. Reading leads to medita-ng on what is read, and our

medita-on leads to prayer that culminates in the contempla-on of the beauty of God. Un-

derstanding the parts, though, is not essen-al to the prac-ce of lec-o divina: simply set

aside -me each day, go to a quiet place, open the Sacred Page and read. “Be s-ll and know

that I am God.”

Exterior and interior silence is also essen-al in the sacred liturgy. We come to the

church from a life filled with ac-on and noise, and when we enter the sacred space of the

House of God, we need to be quiet. Conversa-ons should end in the ves-bule, so that by

the -me we reach the pew, we are on the path to being s-ll. Prayerful readings of the

Scripture lessons appointed for that Mass might be helpful, or perhaps it would be well

simply to kneel in silent adora-on of the Lord Jesus present in the tabernacle. “Be s-ll and

know that I am God.”

Once the celebra-on of Mass begins, the liturgy will be punctuated by several pe-

riods of sacred silence: at the peniten-al rites, as we remember our sins and ask for mercy;

during the Liturgy of the Word, to ponder the Scriptures; aCer the homily, to consider the

instruc-on given; before the end of the Communion Rite, to give thanks for the giC of grace

we receive in the Most Holy Eucharist. During these -mes of silence, we are not wai-ng for

the next thing to happen; instead, we are wai-ng together upon the LORD. “Be s-ll and

know that I am God.”

When Mass is ended, our need for silence does not end. The church is always a place of prayer,

even aCer the procession leaves the sanctuary. For the sake of those who want to linger in ado-

ra-on and of those who are arriving for the next Mass and need to prepare in s-llness, we

should save our conversa-ons un-l we reach the ves-bule or, even beGer, have walked outside

the church, preferably into Miller Square which is designed for fellowship aCer Mass. With such

reveren-al silence, we can begin to fulfill the precept: “Be s-ll and know that I am God.”
