From the Pastor’s Desk

I just had the opportunity to watch the video of the press conference welcoming our new bishop-elect, Bishop Douglas Deshotel. It was announced on February 17th that Bishop Deshotel would be succeeding Bishop Michael Jarrell, who has served as our bishop for the last 14 years. The appointment will be effective on April 27th, with ceremonies of Reception and Installation to be held at the Cathedral.

Though his entire priestly service has been offered in the Diocese of Dallas, Bishop Deshotel (currently auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Dallas) was born and raised in Basile, and attended high school seminary here in Lafayette at Immaculata Seminary High School, before continuing his studies in Dallas. He will be the seventh bishop of Lafayette since the Diocese was established in 1918. Of the first six bishops, 4 were Louisiana natives, including Bishops Jeanmard, Schexnayder, Frey and Jarrell. The other two, bishops O’Donnell and Flynn, came to us from Missouri and New York respectively.

In some ways, it feels rather comforting to have a ‘native son’ return to us as our bishop. During the press conference in response to a question from Bishop Jarrell, Bishop Deshotel confirmed his Cajun roots (offering webbed feet as proof) and mentioning sausage, tasso and roux as items he as regularly brought back with him to Dallas. At the same time, even though he regularly visits family in Basile, having been away for all these years, he also spoke of much that he will need to learn about the Diocese, recognizing that much has changed since he lived here as a youth.

Yet welcoming a new bishop coming to us from Dallas is also a reminder of the universality of the Church. Certainly having been born in the Diocese of Lafayette makes him one of us in a special way. Yet had our new bishop come to us from Indonesia, Africa or even Argentina (!), he would still be ‘one of us’, since we remain unit-ed with Catholics throughout the world by a common faith and a common hope of salvation, in and through our shared belief in Christ our Savior.

Receiving a new bishop is always a momentous event in the life of any local church. We prepare to leave behind the familiar leadership and pastoral care provided by Bishop Jarrell, and what lies ahead remains as al-ways shrouded in mystery. Certainly many things will remain the same, and hopefully some things in need of transformation and growth will be changed. But as has been true since 1918, the Diocese remains a strong com-munity of Catholic faith, sustained by God’s Holy Spirit. The love of Christ urges us on!
