Weekly News & Match Bulletin – Season 2012/13 No.25
21st January 2013
All Saturday’s fixtures were wiped out by snow and frozen pitches. The scene at Bognor’s
Nyewood Lane (pictured by Tommy McMillan) is typical.

THE combination of snow and frozen pitches caused all Saturday’s 33 scheduled Ryman League fixtures to be postponed.
That followed the near wipe-out on December 22, when the only game to take place was on Maidstone’s 3G pitch. On that occasion heavy rain was the culprit.
The last completely blank Saturday was February 4 last year, again due to frozen pitches, and only two games took place the following Saturday, both on the Sussex coast.
December was the worst month of the 2010-11 season, with two games taking place on the 4th, none
at all on the 18th and only five on the 27
th.
The 2009-10 campaign was very badly hit, especially around Christmas and the New Year. Only two games were played on Saturday December 19 and, after Boxing Day went reasonably smoothly, 22 games were postponed on December 29 – and, of the four that started, one had to be abandoned because of an injury to a player.
A full programme on January 2 was cut in half by 16 postponements, and that was just the overture. There was no further action for a fortnight, during which 75 matches involving Ryman League clubs were called off, including cup ties.
The bad weather returned in Easter week, with 26 league games being called off during the week ending on Easter Saturday, April 3.
Going back 50 years, the 1962-63 season was notorious for the ‘Big Freeze’, which virtually wiped out football nationwide for two months.
More recently, the 2000-01 season ended in near-chaos, and five matches were left unplayed.
Many teams were in action at least three times in the last five days. Hornchurch played a home game against Ware and an away match at Clapton on the same night while their neighbours Romford took the field 16 times in 26 days.
Canvey paid the price for reaching the second round of the FA Cup and the FA Trophy final by playing their last eight league games in nine days, the last five in successive days when they managed to record three wins and two draws. They recovered to win the Trophy final eight days later.
Mind you, it’s not always bad weather that causes problems. The 1952-53 season, 60 years ago, was free of major troubles but Corinthian-Casuals still had to play ten league games in ten days towards the end of a 28-match programme, including away matches against both Clapton and Wycombe on April 25. Goalkeeper Spelling managed to play in both.
Of course, there were no floodlights and no penalty shoot-outs in those days and the complications for Casuals included a London Senior Cup tie against Finchley which needed four replays, with each game taking place on a Saturday.
Casuals, in fact, were in action on every Saturday except one from January 3 to April 18 but played league matches on only three of them.
The missing Saturday was April 4. Why? Unlikely though it may seem to present-day followers, Casuals were on an Easter tour to Libya.

Attendance Review
More People Watching Ryman Football
The attendance figures for matches played up to and including 31 December 2012 have now been
released which show a 2.3% overall increase in attendances and particularly show a 4.3% increase in
attendances during December.
Season on season attendances in the South Division show an increase of 24% namely thanks to the
home coming of Maidstone United FC who have achieved an average of 1,581 across their 9 matches
played at home during this period. It is a staggering increase of over 300% from last season.
Other success stories are Whitehawk FC who show a 27% increase following their promotion to the
Premier Division and Burgess Hill Town FC who show a 29% increase in the 8 matches they have
played at home so far this season.
The season highest attendance is at Maidstone United FC but there was another 4 figure crowd over
the Christmas period at Hythe Town FC when they entertained Folkestone Invicta FC and also at
Lewes FC on Boxing Day when 883 persons went to the Dripping Pan for the visit of Bognor Regis
Town FC. In Division North the best Boxing Day attendance was 322 at AFC Sudbury but this did not
beat the season high which was registered at Tilbury FC’s ground for the visit of Grays Athletic FC
during October when 421 spectators were recorded.
Sadly the increases in Ryman South Division are not matched in Ryman North Division and in the
Premier Division. In the North Regional Division attendances are down 15% during the first 5 months of
the season but it is to be hoped that the impact of the promotion of Wroxham FC and Witham Town FC
will reflect in increased attendances during the remainder of the season. In the Premier Division whilst
attendances are down by a matter of 6% it is to be hoped that the lost supporters will be discovered in
the remaining 4 months of the season so as to ensure that the success of the last few seasons is
continued as attendances have been rising overall over the past 3 seasons.
