LAST fIvE GAMES (4-1-0)LAST fIvE GAMES (4-1-0)

QUOTEWORTHyQUOTEWORTHy

Here are a few notable quotes following last Friday's win at Philadlephia:

Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce ArenaOn the key to securing the win despite playing the final 31 minutes with 10 men:Arena: “A lot of smart play. I think our 10 players working together. Brad Knighton came up with some big plays. The backline did a good job. Carles [Gil] came in the game and gave us position at times when they needed. I thought Teal [Bunbury] worked very hard. The play of [Tommy] McNamara and [Matt] Polster in the midfield was excellent. Our center backs, the whole backline did a good job. So collectively, the guys did a very good job, and we had a chance to get that second goal as well, so I think during those last 30 minutes, we did a pretty solid job of defending well, being able to keep the ball a little bit, and backing them up as well to give us a little bit of a breather also.”

Revolution Midfielder Matt PolsterOn the character the team showed in this win: Polster: “This group just wants to win. I think the boys have said it a cou-ple times. Sometimes we don’t care how we win, we just want to win. Granted, I don’t think we would want to go do that again, per se, but it’s good to show that grit and character and winning mentality in these kinds of environments. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. So, to come out of here with three points is huge, because now we have a three-day break and we can just regain and go for the weekend against [New York] City now. So, it’s really positive. I’m really proud of the boys. I don’t think we played particularly well, but, you know, we can clean that up. I think the most important thing is the mentality we showed tonight, which was whatever it takes to get three points, and we showed that we can do that.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. NEW YORK CITY FC: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2021TEAM NOTESTEAM NOTES

A trio of Revolution players excelled on the international stage during September's World Cup Qualifiers as Adam Buksa (Poland), Tajon Bu-chanan (Canada), and goalkeeper Matt Turner (United States) combined to earn nine caps and go undefeated in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers for their respective countries.

Buksa, 25, scored four goals in his first three caps with the Poland National Team in World Cup Qualifying matches against Albania on Sept. 2, San Marino on Sept. 5, and England on Sept. 8. On his international debut, Buksa started and scored the winning goal in a 4-1 win over Albania. The striker followed that up with a second-half hat trick in a 7-1 victory over San Marino. He added another start and a 62-minute shift in Poland's 1-1 draw against England.

Buchanan, 22, has earned all 12 of his senior caps with Canada in 2021 , with seven coming in World Cup Qualifiers. The Brampton, Ontario native played in all three matches for Canada, starting twice, and recorded a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over El Salvador on Sept. 8. Buchanan now owns two goals and four assists in his national team career.

Turner, 27, improved to 8-0-2 in 10 starts with the U.S. Men’s National Team, with a 0.29 goals against average on the international stage. Turner started all three of the United States' qualifiers during the September window.

The Revolution remain on pace to set a club record for most points won in a single season (59) and challenge the MLS single-season mark (72). New England is outpacing its 2005 Revolution side, which captured 59 points en route to an appearance in MLS Cup. The club also has a league record in its sights -- with a 2.17 points per game average, the Revs are on course to threaten LAFC's MLS record of 72 points won in 2019.

New England enters the weekend 14 points clear of second-place Orlando City SC in the Eastern Conference and 10 points ahead of Seattle in the Supporters' Shield standings. The 2021 Revolution are on pace to eclipse the 1998 LA Galaxy (2.13) for the most points per game in MLS history and the 2019 LAFC team for most points in a single season.

Nine games un-beaten is tied for the third-longest undefeated streak in club history. The club had never previously won eight of nine games in league action. New England's club record of 11 games without a loss was set in 2005 and matched in 2019 during Bruce Arena's first run of games at the helm:

The Revolution's success can be largely attributed to the team's domi-nance at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution own a 9-1-1 record in Foxbor-ough this year as the team approaches double-digit wins at home for the sixth time in team annals. The club's .864 winning percetnage at home is best in MLS. New England's 5-0-0 start at home was also the club's best ever. Despite finishing second in Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year voting last year, Turner ranked atop the charts in several advanced and traditional statistical categories, including goals allowed minus expected goals al-lowed. According to American Soccer Analysis, Turner's -7.27 goals al-lowed minutes expected goals (GA-xGA) was the best mark among MLS goalkeepers in 2020 by a margin of 1.96.

For his career, Turner has totaled -23.69 goals saved above expected, the best total in MLS since the statistic began being tracked by American Soccer Analysis in 2013. Turner's impressive total comes despite him playing only four of the nine seasons during that span and seeing approx-imately 10,000 fewer minutes than the three next-closest players.

He anchored New England to a new club record for best goals-against average (1.09) in a single season, set a new career high with six shutouts - two shy of the league lead - despite the shortened season, and conceded only 24 goals through 22 starts. He finishing the year ranked among the top five league-wide in saves and saves percentage.

In both MLS and international circles, Turner has also become notorious for his heroics on penalty kicks, including saving one from Orlando City SC's Nani in the 2020 Eastern Conference Semifinals to help secure the win. He was recognized for his blistering scoring pace with MLS Player of the Month honors for July. It marks the first time in Revolution history the club has produced back-to-back Player of the Month winners, following Carles Gil's win for June.

Revolution captain Carles Gil, Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month for June and a leading MLS MVP candidate, returned to action on Septem-ber 3 after being sidelined for the month of August with a muscle injury. Gil owns 15 assists on the season and earned the June honor after recording five assists in three games durign the month. Despite missing five games, Gil's league-leading 15 assists remain nearly double that of any other player in MLS.

Gil, who signed a new multi-year contract with the Revs on May 24, either leads or is among the league leaders in virtually every attacking category, staking his claim as a frontrunner for Landon Donovan MVP consideration:

Midfielder Tajon Buchanan was named Best Young Player for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup after leading the Canada Men's National Team to the Semifinal. Buchanan was Canada's catalyst throughout its run at the tour-nament, starting all five of the Canada's games and recording one goal and five assists, including his first international goal in the Semifinal against Mexico.

In MLS play, the 2021 All Star continues to establish himself as one of the league's most explosive wingers. He has already posted single-season ca-reer highs in both goals (6) and assist (4). The 22-year-old has scored in three straight games and tallied four times in his last six outings.

Now the owner of 12 international caps with two goals and four assists, Buchanan made his senior-team debut earlier this summer with four ap-pearances in 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. He notched two assists in his full international debut before adding three substitute appearances. Bu-chanan than added three appearances, two starts, one goal, and one assist in September's qualifiers.

In March 2021, Buchanan, the 2020 Canadian Men’s Youth Player of the Year, made his first international appearance at any level when he featured for the Under-23 MNT in the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

His ability to beat defenders one-on-one and draw fouls in dangerous positions has set up several advantageous set-piece opportunities for the Revolution. Despite missing five games for international duty, he remains tied for third league-wide in fouls won in the final third:

BUCHANAN NAMED GOLD CUP'S BEST yOUNG PLAyERBUCHANAN NAMED GOLD CUP'S BEST yOUNG PLAyERGoalkeeper Matt Turner and defender Henry Kessler were crowned Conacaf Gold Cup champions after helping the USMNT top Mexico, 1-0, in the tournament Final.

Turner was named Man of the Match for both the Gold Cup Final after his five-save effort, and for the Semifinal win against Qatar. He also took home the Golden Glove as the tournament's most outstanding goalkeeper after conceding only one goal -- a penalty kick against Martinique in the group stage -- across six games. He was one of two USMNT players (Miles Robin-son) to play every minute of the tournament. Now the owner of seven caps, Turner is yet to yield a goal from open play in international play and received a call up for the USMNT's World Cup Qualifying matches in September.

Kessler also made his first career international appearance at the senior level when he entered the Final as a substitute in extra time. Turner and Kessler join an exclusive group of Revolution players to lift a Gold Cup trophy with the USMNT: Juan Agudelo (2017), Clint Dempsey (2005), Pat Noonan (2005, 2007), Michael Parkhurst (2007), Steve Ralston (2005), Matt Reis (2005), Kelyn Rowe (2017), Taylor Twellman (2007).

Turner earned his Gold Cup call-up on the heels of his best showing of the MLS season against New York City FC on June 19 -- a seven-save effort highlighted by a penalty kick denial of Valentin Castellanos that saw him voted MLS Player of the Week.

His penalty save against New York City was the fourth of his MLS career across all competitions. He has faced 10 penalty kicks across all competi-tions with the Revs, giving him a 40 percent save rate on bids from the spot. Turner also became the first USMNT goalkeeper to save a penalty in his senior team debut in the modern era when he recorded a stop in his first cap against Trinidad & Tobago on Jan. 31, 2021.

The New England Revolution have transferred 22-year-old midfielder Tajon Buchanan to Club Brugge of the Belgian First Division A for an undisclosed fee. New England also retains a percentage of Buchanan’s future sell-on rights. Buchanan will remain with New England through the end of the 2021 Major League Soccer season.

Buchanan, who made the 2021 MLS All-Star Team as a commissioner’s pick, has recorded six goals with four assists through 17 MLS appearanc-es this season. The Brampton, Ontario native owns 50 MLS appearanc-es, eight goals, and eight assists with the Revolution, plus an additional four starts and one goal in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. A first-round MLS SuperDraft pick in 2019 out of Syracuse University, Buchanan has showcased his versatility as an attacking midfielder, winger, outside back, and wingback during his MLS career. Buchanan will join fellow Ca-nadian internationals Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Cyle Larin (Besiktas) as former MLS players featuring for European clubs.

On the international stage, Buchanan, 22, owns 12 caps with the Cana-da Men’s National Team, five of which came in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup this July, and has been called up for Canada's World Cup Qualifying matches in September. Buchanan was named to the Gold Cup Best XI and earned the tournament’s Best Young Player Award after catalyzing a Canada squad that reached the semifinal round. Buchanan tallied his first international goal in the semifinal match against Mexico. The 2020 Canada Men’s Youth International Player of the Year, Buchanan also fea-tured at the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship in March 2021. Buchanan was also named the Canada Soccer Men's Player of the Month for August after scoring three goals and recording an assist for the Revolution.

Bruce Arena continues climbing the MLS record books in what is now his 17th MLS season as a head coach. Already the winningest active coach in MLS, he eclipsed the late Sigi Schmid last season for most MLS Cup Playoff games coached (54).

Arena owns 268 combined regular season and postseason wins in MLS. In 2019, he became the second head coach in MLS history to eclipse 700 regular season points earned, joining Sigi Schmid (843). With an all-time regular season record of 234-135-109 (32-14-20 with New England), Arena ranks second in league history in regular season wins and points earned.

One year after Revolution II -- the Revolution's USL League One outfit -- was established to bridge the gap between the club's Academy and first team, the pipeline is already bearing fruit for the senior side.

On May 12 at Philadelphia, defender Jon Bell made his MLS debut and played 90 minutes in central defense. He was joined in the starting lineup by midfielder Lucas 'Maciel' Felix, who made his MLS debut on May 1 vs. Atlanta. It marked the first time two Revolution II alums appeared in the same match for the Revolution.

Bell slotted in alongside Andrew Farrell in three consecutive games be-tween May 12 and May 22, and then returned to the starting lineup on June 19 and scored his first professional goal. Bell's aerial dominance has been particularly noteworthy -- among MLS defenders who have played 500 minutes this season, he ranks sixth in aerials won per 90 minutes.

Maciel has also made 15 appearances this season, including 13 starts, es-tablishing himself as a staple in the team's starting lineup. He ranks second among Revolution players in pass completion percentage with an 88.89 clip. In his MLS debut on May 1 vs. Atlanta, he completed all 33 of his passes. BRUCE ARENA• Named the Revolution’s sporting director and the club’s eighth head coach on May 14, 2019.• Holds a record five MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997, 2011, 2012, 2014), and shares the all-time record with three MLS

Coach of the Year honors and three MLS Supporters’ Shields.• The winningest active MLS head coach and one of two coaches in league history to eclipse 200 regular

season MLS wins and 700 career points.• Reached the MLS Cup final in seven of 15 seasons as an MLS head coach, with a record 35 MLS Cup Playoff

wins and 54 postseason games coached.• Managed the U.S. Men’s National Team through two separate stints (1998-2006, 2016-17) and two FIFA Men’s

World Cups in 2002 and 2006, and won three Gold Cup titles.• Built a dynasty over 18 seasons as head coach at the University of Virginia, winning five NCAA Division-1

National Championships and six ACC titles.

Bruce Arena is in his third season as Sporting Director and Head Coach of the New England Revolution after his appointment to the position on May 14, 2019. The five-time MLS Cup winner is the eighth head coach in club history and oversees all soccer operations for the New England Revolution, including head coaching duties, roster man-agement, scouting, and the oversight of Revolution II and the Revolution Academy.

In his first two seasons at the helm in New England, Arena has led the Revolution to consecutive MLS Cup Playoff appearances, including a berth in the Eastern Conference Final in his first full season in New England. He made his return to the MLS postseason in 2019 by leading one of the most remarkable turnarounds in league history. After a 2-8-2 start had the Revolution sitting in last place in MLS, Arena went unbeaten in his first eight games on the sidelines and helped New England reach the postseason, ending a three-year drought for the club.

The team’s historic turnaround in 2019 came despite Arena only making one in-season addition to the roster, bringing in Argentine striker Gustavo Bou via a club-re-cord transfer in July. In his first offseason, Arena further bolstered the roster with a combination of MLS veterans and international signings highlighted by young Polish striker Adam Buksa. The roster improvements paid dividends as Arena led the Revolution on a run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2020, highlighted by away wins against the top-seeded Philadelphia Union and fourth-seeded Orlando City SC.

The Long Island, N.Y. native joined the Revolution with one of the most decorated coaching careers in American soccer history that has spanned more than 40 sea-sons at the collegiate, professional, and international levels. Arena’s MLS resume includes a record five MLS Cup titles, three Supporters’ Shields, seven conference championships, one U.S. Open Cup title, and one Concacaf Champions' Cup. He has reached the MLS Cup final in seven of his 15 seasons coaching in the league. Arena has earned three MLS Coach of the Year selections, tied for the most all-time, first winning the honor in 1997 with D.C. United before being recognized in 2009 and 2011 with the LA Galaxy.

With more than 250 combined regular season and postseason wins in MLS to date, and a regular season record of 218-131-105 (.596) entering 2021, Arena is the league’s winningest active head coach. He is one of two coaches in league history to have surpassed 200 regular season wins and 700 career points, along with Sigi Schmid. Arena is the league’s all-time leader in MLS Cup Playoff games coached with 54 (35-13-6), while his 35 playoff wins are also the most in league history.

On the international stage, Arena, 69, coached the U.S. Men’s National Team over two separate stints from 1998-2006 and 2016-17, amassing the most wins in the program’s history with a record of 81-35-32. He led the Stars and Stripes to a Quarterfinal finish in the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup – the country's best showing since 1930 – as well an appearance in the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Arena also guided the U.S. Men's National Team to more Gold Cup titles than any other coach, cap-turing the continental trophy three times in 2002, 2005, and 2017.

Before his time in the professional ranks, Arena began his head coaching career with one season at the University of Puget Sound (1976), before being named the head coach at the University of Virginia in 1978. During his decorated 18-year tenure at Virginia, he led the Cavaliers to five NCAA Division-1 National Championships, including four in a row from 1991-94, as well as six ACC Men’s Soccer titles (1988, 1991-95). While at Virginia, Arena coached a number of American soccer legends, including Claudio Reyna, John Harkes, and current D.C. United Head Coach Ben Olsen.

In 1996, Arena received an offer to lead the United States Under-23 Men’s National Team in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Shortly after the Olympics, he as-sumed the head role with D.C. United, where he led the Black-and-Red to a 61-35 record, including the first two MLS Cup titles in 1996 and 1997, and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title in 1996.

Following the 1998 FIFA Men’s World Cup in France, the United States Soccer Federation turned to Arena, who helped the team qualify for the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup. In the tournament, Arena’s team recorded an impressive win over powerhouse Portugal and topped Mexico, 2-0, in the Round of 16 en route to the nation’s first appearance in the Quarterfinals in a 72-year span. That same year, Arena led the USMNT to the Concacaf Gold Cup title, one of his three triumphs in the competition.

In 2005, Arena won his second Concacaf Gold Cup ahead of the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Germany. In the 2006 tournament, the United States earned a 1-1 draw against Italy, but a 2-1 defeat to Ghana sent the USMNT home early.

The next season, Arena took charge of the New York Red Bulls, where he spent the end of the 2006 season and all of the 2007 campaign. In 2008, Arena joined the LA Galaxy for what would be an incredible nine-year tenure that included three MLS Cups in a four-year span and two Supporters’ Shields in 2010 and 2011.

Following his decorated career with the Galaxy, Arena rejoined the U.S. Men’s National Team in November 2016. In his second run as head coach, he lost only two out of 18 games at the helm, though the United States fell short of qualification for the 2018 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

A 2010 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Arena was named the 2015 Werner Fricker Builder Award recipient, earning U.S. Soccer’s highest honor for his more than 40 years of service to the game.

A talented lacrosse player, Arena grew up on Long Island and would go on to attend Nassau Community College, where he played both lacrosse and soccer. Arena then transferred to Cornell University in 1971, where as a goalkeeper, he led his team to the 1972 NCAA College Cup Final Four and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Defensive Player award. During the 1973 season, Arena contributed as an assistant coach with Cornell, before then accepting a head coaching position at the University of Puget Sound.

Off the field, Arena has authored a number of books and is a member of the NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame, after receiving induction in 2008. He and his wife, Phyllis, live in Boston. Arena’s son, Kenny, was an assistant coach under his father with the LA Galaxy from 2014-16, before joining the staff of Los Angeles FC in 2018, where he currently serves as an assistant coach.

In his role, Onalfo works closely with Sporting Director Bruce Arena managing the club’s day-to-day soccer operations, includ-ing oversight of Revolution II, the Revolution Academy and the scouting department.

The Sao Paulo, Brazil native and Ridgefield, Conn. product joins the Revolution following an extensive coaching and playing career in Major League Soccer and with the United States Men's National Team. Onalfo has won MLS Cup as both a player and a coach, including one as a member of D.C. United in 1999, and three as an assis-tant coach with the LA Galaxy in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

Onalfo owns 12 total years of MLS coaching experience, highlighted by stints as head coach of D.C. United (2010), the then-Kansas City Wiz-ards (2007-09), and the LA Galaxy (2017). While continuing as an assis-tant with the Galaxy, he also served as the inaugural head coach of USL Championship side LA Galaxy II from 2014-16, where he led the club to a Western Conference title in 2015. When he departed “Los Dos” to take over head coaching duties with the Galaxy first team, his overall record with the developmental side finished at 46-29-20.

On the international level, Onalfo spent six years as an assistant coach for the United States Men's National Team under Bruce Arena. He served as an assistant for the USMNT from 2002-07 – including at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA Men’s World CupTM – and also worked as an assistant with the U.S. Under-23 MNT in 2002. Prior to joining the Revolution, he most recently assisted the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team from 2018 through May 2019, including in Poland at the FIFA U-20 Men’s World CupTM, and briefly served as acting head coach of the U-19 side for a training camp in January 2019.

Onalfo, 50, entered the coaching ranks an assistant with D.C. United in 2000 following his retirement. He remained with the Black and Red un-til September 2002, briefly serving as interim head coach in 2001. He led Kansas City for two-and-a-half seasons, compiling a 27-29-22 record, and helped the club reach the postseason twice, includ-ing a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2007. In December 2009, Onalfo was named head coach of D.C. United, where he would remain for eight months before departing the club.

In four seasons with the Cavaliers, he earned a pair of All-ACC First Team selections and helped the team win the 1988 ACC Championship. He began his pro-fessional career with French side La Ciotat in 1991, before featuring for the Connecticut Wolves of the USISL from 1994-95, and Mexican second division side Tampico Madero in 1995.

Onalfo was selected by the LA Galaxy in the inaugural MLS Draft and would make 13 appearances for the club in 1996, helping it reach the first ever MLS Cup. The defender went on to register 23 appearances across four seasons in MLS, spending additional time with San Jose (1997) and D.C. United (1998-99). He recorded one international cap with the U.S. Men's National Team and featured extensively at the youth level, includ-ing the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship, the 1991 Pan American Games, and the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Onalfo’s journey took a detour soon after the 1992 Olympics, when a di-agnosis of stage three Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 24 disrupted his career and nearly ended his life. After surviving his arduous battle with cancer, Onalfo resumed his playing career with Connecticut and then Mexican side Tampico FC, before joining the Galaxy for the inaugural MLS season.

DIRECTOR Of SCOUTING & PRO PERSONNELRemi Roy is currently in his 12th season with the New England Revolution and his fourth as the club's Director of Scouting & Player Personnel, having been named to the posi-tion in January 2018. Roy has been with the club since 2010, previously serving as an assistant coach with New England for eight seasons.

In his current role, Roy is focused on scouting and talent identification in players at the collegiate, national, and international levels. He works closely with the Revolution technical staff in player evaluation and has a role in all soccer-related aspects of the organization, including com-munication with agents and facilitating MLS communication and com-pliance.

Roy was heavily engaged in the Revolution's scouting operations throughout his tenure as an assistant coach, contributing to the club's domestic and international scouting efforts. As an assistant coach, first under Steve Nicol and then for six seasons on Jay Heaps' staff, he worked primarily with the Revs' first-team goalkeepers and also provid-ed additional training for the Revolution Academy goalkeepers.

During his time on the Revs' coaching staff, Roy mentored several tal-ented goalkeepers and helped them each achieve success in the pro-fessional ranks. In addition to coaching former Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis in his pursuit of MLS longevity and success, Roy helped Bobby Shuttleworth establish himself as one of the league’s premier goalkeep-ers since his debut in 2010. In 2016, Roy’s guidance helped Brad Knigh-ton start a career-high 13 matches, including six wins.

Roy joined the Revolution after 10 years as the assistant coach/goal-keepers coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams at the University of Mobile in Alabama, his alma mater. During his tenure in Mobile, Roy was also a member of the Region III goalkeeping staff. Ad-ditionally, he served as the Puerto Rico national team's goalkeepers coach in its preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
