Holy Meals on Wheels

So far this summer we’ve run, paddled, and hiked—now it’s time for a Eucharist on a bike. Okay, maybe not on a bike, but we are going to go for a bike ride and then celebrate the Eucharist. We’ll meet at Govalle Park to ride the Walnut Creek Hike and Bike trail on Saturday, August 20, at 5:42 pm. The Walnut Creek trail is a bikes- and pedestrian-only paved path along Boggy Creek and Walnut Creek on the east side of Austin. Therefore, people of all ages, and bikes of all kinds are welcome. Some of us might ride 3 miles, others 23, but we’ll rally back at the park at 7:00 pm for the Lord’s Supper. Friends from St. James and St. Michael’s will be joining us, so come on out for some Episcopal camaraderie too. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Christian at [email protected]. Unabashedly Episcopalian

The Bishop of Texas, Andy Doyle will be joining us for St. Matthew’s Day on Sept 25. In preparation for his visit and all of the associated baptisms, confirmations, and receptions, we will be studying his book, Unabashedly Episcopalian, which introduces and celebrates our tradition. Contact Fr. Christian immediately so he can get you a copy of the book. This is going to be an especially joyous day, so if you’ve been considering officially becoming part of our family, now’s a great time! Submitted by Christian Hawley

To get to know Bishop Doyle and his vision for the church better, check out his interview with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry at http://www.epicenter.org/booklist/church-a-generous-community-amplified-for-the-future

Discovery Class Begins Sunday, August 21 Room B-18, Sanctuary Basement

If you’ve never been confirmed, if you don’t know what confirmation is, or if you’re coming from another tradition, we encourage you check out our Discovery Class this fall. Both our priests, Merrill and Christian, will be teaching the class this fall on Sundays at 9:15 am on beginning on August 21 and continuing each Sunday through September 18. And while the in-person sessions will be the most fun, for those who can’t make every class, we will also have online resources every week and/or a wrap-up retreat on Saturday, Sept 24. Please contact Fr. Christian at [email protected] if you’re an adult being baptized, confirmed, or received into the Episco-pal Church, on Sunday, September 25, so he can help you navigate the process of your choice. See the article below for an addition way to prepare. Submitted by Christian Hawley

A lot of Safeguarding Activity Underway—Training Dates Available

As we gear up for the end of summer, we all want to be current with certification for Safeguarding God’s Children and God’s People. As you know, the Episcopal Dioceses of Texas requires that all volunteers and employees who are involved with children be certified for Safeguarding God’s Children and all who have leadership or pastoral roles with adults be certified for Safeguarding God’s People. If you are involved with both children and adults, you will need to be certified for both.

The process for both certifications is basically the same, except the content is different. Both require an interview with the business manager, completing an online questionnaire regarding some personal information, providing four references, and authorizing a background check. It is a straightforward process and takes about 10 minutes. Once you have completed the online questionnaire, you can register for the class. If you need to be certified as you continue your ministry here at St. Matthews, please get the applications completed so you can sign up for the class in the next few weeks. To get started, send an email to [email protected] ASAP.

You will receive confirmation of the class location and time. When the reference check is completed, you will receive a certificate in your email. This is valid for five years. Details can be found on our website at http://stmattsaustin.org/Serve/safeguarding.html. If you have any questions, please call the Business Manager, Chris Schumacher at 512-345-8314.

There is a class for Safeguarding God’s Children on Tuesday, August 16, 6:00-9:00 pm, St. Matthew’s Youth Center.

Basement Renovations Update!

More news on renovations for sanctuary restrooms and the mess in the basement by the women’s bathroom. We met with the project manager from our contractor who will be responsible for all the work we are going to do inside both the men’s and women’s bathrooms. The pre-construction meeting is set for the last week of August after which we can announce the dates for every project on campus, including the bathroom renovations (new mirrors, wallpaper, commodes, sinks, counter-tops, and fixtures.) .) As a reminder, we are planning, in addition, to replace the carpet in the whole basement.

A can a week from you, keeps people from hunger!

Please help people whose opportunities have been diminished by poverty and homelessness to avoid hunger by bringing one or more items of non-perishable food to church each week. Caritas collection baskets are in the Sanctuary Commons and in Huffman Hall.

This week’s primary needs at the Caritas Food Pantries are: canned items such as pork & beans, chicken, ham, soups, mixed vegetables, spinach, fruit; cold cereals, dried pasta, Hamburger or Tuna Helper-type meals, and peanut butter. They could also use shaving cream and shampoo.

Please be sure that donated food items are not in glass containers nor past their expiration date as they have to be thrown away.

If you weren’t able to bring an item this week and would like to contribute a $1:00 or more, there is a Caritas money box near the collection baskets in the Sanctuary Commons. The proceeds are used to purchase food.

So grateful for your generosity, thank you. Submitted by: Jane Baxter Lynn

Senior Warden’s State of the Parish Address

Dear Parish Family:

As your senior warden, from time to time I’ll offer up a word on the health of our parish. I want you to know that as of July, our parish is strong and healthy in every way. Our Sunday attendance is trending upward (surprisingly so in the summer), while our ministries and outreach programs are flourishing and diversifying. In the coming weeks, I’ll be speaking with you regarding many exciting opportunities on the horizon for our church community. For now, please know that your vestry is working hard to formulate targeted objectives for the next six, twelve, and eighteen months. We want to capture your ideas and feedback as we do this strategic planning, so please be on the lookout for some surveys this fall. In the meantime, if you have ideas or feedback you’d like to share, please grab one of our vestry members, including our newest member, Matt Thompson, who will be serving out the remainder of Sandra Bravo’s term. Matt and his family have brought a lot to our parish, and we look forward to this entrepreneur and former senior warden sharing a lot of wisdom and creativity with our leadership team. So introduce yourself to Matt and then let him know your thoughts on how we can make St. Matthew’s even better.

I also want you to know that as we end our second quarter of the year, our financial position is good. We are within budget, however we know that our costs in the second half of the year will increase. This means it is critical that each member or family make every effort to keep your pledge current, or if you haven’t made a pledge, to consider investing in our communal life this summer. It is important that we finish this year on a solid financial footing and not start 2017 in the red. There is a pledge card in the seat back in front of you when you are at church. Please do not hesitate to contact our business manager Chris Schumacher at [email protected] if you need more information. You can also go to our website, www.stmattsaustin.org and click the “Give Online” button to make a donation. Our ministry planning depends on our pledging horizon, so please help us on both fronts and continue to invest your time, talent, treasure, and voice in our life together.

Thanks for all you do to make St. Matthew’s such a wonderful community,

Doug O’Connell Senior Warden

Your church office has accumulated several items. Please come by the office to claim your treasures! Habitat for Humanity—Save the Date

St Matthew’s will once again be participating in Austin’s All Faith’s Build. Our work Saturdays this year will be September 17

and October 15, with the dedication on November 19. We will also be providing lunch for the entire work crew on Sep-

tember 17. More to come on the family we’re helping and how to sign up, but for now keep those dates open on your calen-

dar to help us build a better Austin. Submitted by Christian Hawley

In thinking about the ways I try to walk with God through the hallways of Seton, into patients rooms, emergency rooms and waiting rooms, I have memories of sacred times, feeling the holiness of relationships during times of crises. At the same time, HIPPA prevents me from sharing any story in detail. I have decided to describe or attempt to describe part of what my faith in action is by thinking about what I want to bring to those to whom I minister. I want to impart God’s love through my non-judgmental presence. The only way I can attempt to be a non-judgmental presence is to be aware of my “pastoral identity.”

Pastoral Identity was not a concept with which I was familiar until I started CPE. Essentially pastoral identity in large part is about self-awareness. To be non-judgmental, I must know what I bring into the room, from my own past pain and joy. I must be willing to embrace my own brokenness and sin and affirm God’s love, forgiveness and grace by trying to be “Jesus with skin on” to those I meet. What that represents to me is listening to stories from others, sitting with them as emotions may surface and spill over, accepting each to whom I minister as a beloved child of God, and praying that healing will begin. I am giving meaning to my pain, ministering to others, from the deep gratitude I feel for the healing I have received.

Consequently, this document is not only about “my faith in action” but also about St. Matthew’s faith in action. So many of you accepted me when I walked in the door, November of 1992, sat in the back row, shed tears and feared your judgment that never came. Fast forward to the Sunday School classes I attended, the many sermons I heard, Cursillo, and the beauty of our liturgy and the Eucharist. You supported me in my journey through the seminary, never telling me how impractical it was. I carry you as part of my pastoral identity as I walk the hallways of Seton. For each of you who were there for me over the many years we have walked together, I am what I am because of your faith in action. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being “Jesus with skin on” to me. My faith in action comes from your faith in action. I am blessed.

Youth Ministry News

July/August Youth Events—What a summer! After the amazingness of VBS and Missionpalooza, youth ministry programming is on hiatus for a few weeks. We are very excited about two amazing formation opportunities, and invited you to consider join us in the following:

August 16-18 Roots to Fruit Camp Youth are heartily encouraged to join Travis and Susan for three days of formation and fellowship. See the article on page 2 for details.

September 25 Confirmation Opportunity with Bishop Doyle on St. Matthew’s Day. Confirmation is our rite of passage as Christians, and an opportunity to learn more fully what life in Christ involves. All youth, grades 6-12, who are

interested in learning more about taking on a more mature engagement with their faith, are warmly invited to attend our confirmation classes this fall.

Travis will hold two classes for new youth confirmands on the two Satur-days preceding the Bishop’s Visit—tentatively set for September 3, and September 10, noon-3:00 pm in the Youth Center (with a possible make-up date on Saturday, 9/24). Breakfast Club (Sunday School for children K - 12th grade)

Building Faith, Brick by Brick

Kickoff on Sunday, August 21, Huffman Hall 9:15 - 10:15 am

A light breakfast will be served each Sunday.

This fall, we will be kicking off the new school year with a super fun and engaging Sunday School program! Building Faith Brick by Brick offers a culturally relevant, hands-on way to explore faith stories with a broad range of ages. It grew out of one congregation’s realization that there was a large group of first-grade boys who needed to engage in a new way of interacting with the biblical story. Knowing how much Lego® bricks continue to be popular with children, the author dug deep into the well of creativity and an enormous bin of little plastic building bricks to meld together a new way of teaching the stories of God.

We are excited to offer this program and hope that your children will attend. For more information, please contact Susan Goodman, Family Minister at [email protected] or Travis Helms, Children & Youth Minister at [email protected]. Submitted by Susan Goodman
