Challenged by Hurricane Irma, we persevered & restored powerHurricane Irma will be talked about

and remembered for years to come.  The last time a hurricane brought so much destruction and extended power outages was in 2004, when we were hit by Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Since 2004, we’ve been fortunate here in North Florida. There have been a couple of weather events, like Tropical Storm Debbie in 2012 and Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew last fall, that caused sizable outages for our members. Who would have guessed that when it was our turn to face the storms, we’d be impacted by one of the largest and most intense hurricanes to make landfall in Florida. The entire state was affected by this storm. Hurricane Irma caused power out-ages for more than 90 percent of our members. At the peak of the outages, more than 161,000 members were out. The main reason for damage came as high winds pushed over trees, which fell across our power lines.  In many areas, entire stretches of feed-er lines were torn down by trees which fell across highways, streets and yards. In some places, the entire distribution system would have to be rebuilt from the ground up – new poles, cross-arms, insulators, hardware and conductor. Of course, power interruptions of any length are an inconvenience. We know our members depend on having electric-ity available at the flip of a switch. No one wants the power back on more than our linemen, who put up with some dif-ficult conditions to restore service. We understand the frustration many of you felt when your power was off for an extended period.  Please be assured, we want to restore your electric service as efficiently and safe as possible. We had crews in the field as soon as it was safe following the direct impact of the storm.  Due to its size, Hurricane Irma affect-ed not only Clay Electric’s service area, but the entire state. This impact strained many resources. We were proactive in

securing materials and outside crews.  Many crews had to travel long dis-tances to get here. At the peak of the restoration, we had 1,200 personnel in the field. This amount is the largest num-ber of field personnel Clay Electric has ever used.  Due to extensive damages in many areas, restoration transformed to re-building the system. It simply takes time to rebuild a physical system like the one that carries electricity to homes and busi-nesses. Many of you responded with sup-port and expressions of gratitude. These expressions of support and thanks were helpful for the morale of our crews and the many crews from other areas and states that came here to lend us a hand.  I appreciate the hard work, dedica-tion and perseverance that each one of our employees showed during the many long days it took to restore service to members. I also appreciate the line crews and vegetation management/right-of-way crews that came from cooperatives and private contractors in Texas, Louisi-ana, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Nebraska, Arkansas, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina and Wisconsin. I thank them for their willingness to leave their own homes and families to travel here and help us in our time of need. Were we prepared for what hap-pened?  We were as prepared as any utility can be. We had plenty of materials and supplies on hand, our crews were ready, and our contacts in other states were no-tified. Following our emergency opera-tions plan, we made sure everything was ready, and then we did like our mem-bers did – we found a safe place to ride out the storm. When it was safe to come out, we assessed the damage and began our restoration efforts. For so many years, our annual out-age rate has been one of the best in the southeast. Our members, on average, might be out of power for two hours a

year due to events like thunderstorms, auto accidents involving power poles, and equipment failures.  The commitment we’ve always had to provide top-notch service hasn’t changed; what changed on Sept. 11 is

that our entire distribution system was damaged by one of the largest hurri-canes ever to make landfall in Florida.  We know that it is never a good time to be without power, espe-cially for an extended period of time.

Hurricane Irma presented many chal-lenges for all of us. Each storm is an opportunity from which all of us can learn, and hopefully be as prepared as we can be for the next major natural disaster.

Restoration crews dealt with significant water challenges in many parts of the co-op’s service area. Top photo at left shows another water obstacle facing crews working to restore power in the Lake City District.

Above, trucks are shown in the staging area at the Gainesville District office before heading out to restore electric service.Coordinating a massive group to restore power to our entire service area takes an immense amount of preparation. A few of the tasks handled before the crews even arrive include: securing housing accom-modations, ensuring an adequate level of fuel is on hand, coordinating crew assign-ments for each of the Cooperative’s six districts, and planning meals. Trucks are stocked with materials daily, information is dispatched to personnel, safety of all the crews is managed, and a Clay Electric em-ployee must be assigned as crew leader to be with the contractors in the field. Just think of the time it takes for even simpler tasks, such as safely staging an additional 200 trucks at a district office, or filling wa-ter coolers each morning so the crews can remain hydrated while in the field.

Seminole to begin transmission line maintenance Seminole Electric Cooperative will begin a transmission line mainte-nance project in October. The maintenance will occur on Seminole transmission lines located from Palatka to Silver Springs. Semi-nole wanted to inform local landown-ers that it has engaged consultants and contractors who will work along-side Seminole to complete this proj-ect. As part of this process, you may see personnel and machinery work-ing within Seminole’s rights-of-ways

and easements. Occasionally the machinery used by consultants and contractors may include, but will not be limited to, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), all-terrain vehicles, and various types of trucks and tractors.  If you have any questions or concerns during this process, please contact Seminole by emailing us at [email protected], or calling 813-739-1402.

Next month, transmission line maintenance will begin on Seminole Electric lines running from Palatka to Silver Springs.

This past summer, Clay Electric began to implement Ad-vanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), a meter system that will offer you a number of exciting new benefits. Advanced meters use digital technology to read your electric use and communicate it to us over a secure wireless network. Clay Electric members expect more from their cooperative and expect it to use technology to provide them with infor-mation about their power usage, outages, expected time of restoration, and more. With advanced meters, we’ll be able

to find out what’s wrong with your meter, turn power on and off remotely, and perform other customer service tasks much more quickly than before. You’ll also have more information about how much power you use and when, giving you more control. Advanced meters will be installed at no cost to you. More information will be shared prior to installation. Visit https://www.clayelectric.com/reliability-restoration/advanced-meters for more information.

Advanced meters are on the horizon for Clay members
