ACTIVE APOSTLE SHOUT OUT! Nancy Greening
Nancy Greening is a long time parishioner at Sacred Heart and helps all over the parish! You have probably seen her at daily Mass or ushering at Sunday Mass. Nancy is a fantastic chaperone for Student Ministry at Sacred Heart (SMASH). She has gone on mission trips, attended the Faith In Action spring break service retreat, and she plans to lead a student small group in The Search series this fall.
Apóstol Activo: Nancy Greening Nancy Greening ha sido miembro de la parroquia por muchos años. Ella siempre está dispuesta a ayudar en varias capacidades. Probablemente la has visto en una Misa diaria, o acomodando a la gente en las Misas dominicales. Nancy es una chaperona excelente para el Ministerio de Jóvenes (SMASH por sus siglas en ingles). Sacred Heart Women’s Guild Updates
GUILD TO LEAD ON CHURCH CLEANING For anyone in the parish willing to spend about ten minutes in a group of four volunteers to clean pews after funerals, the Women’s Guild would like to hear from you! Similar to the parish list on those who prepare food for funerals, the Guild will compile a ready list of volunteers to call upon when this help is needed, as long as COVID precautions remain in place. This is not for just Women’s Guild members. All are welcomed, including students who’d like to earn service hours. Contact Guild President Stephanie Latting to join the list: [email protected] or 515.250.1629. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THESE GUILD PROGRAMS! We will continue to social distance, wear masks and invite all those who can attend to come to Sacred Heart’s Parish Center for the following programs. Meetings are held 6 pm-8 pm. Come and visit either meeting to see if you’ve been wondering whether you might like to join the Guild! Oct. 6: Blessman Ministries speaker, faith-based
nonprofit creating sustainable programs for the poor in South African province of Limpopo. We will hand out casserole pans and egg casserole recipes to assist the Salvation Army in feeding those who are homeless. If you’re unable to attend our October meeting, contact Guild President Stephanie Latting at [email protected] to obtain the casserole pans or recipe. The recipe also is being shared in the Guild e-News.
Nov. 10: Salvation Army speaker. Bring prepared egg
casseroles to the Parish Center kitchen that day, marked for the Salvation Army. We will also make Jesse Tree ornaments for parishioners to buy gifts for those of limited means who are homebound or in nursing homes in the Christmas season.
HAT, SCARF, MITTEN, GLOVE DRIVE As the fall weather arrives, the Women’s Guild will once again lead a drive to collect warm winter wearables. We welcome donations from all parishioners of both children and adult-sizes of hats, scarves, mittens and gloves. The Guild will deliver these to West Des Moines Human Services to distribute. A bin will be placed in the gathering space during the month of October. Thanks in advance for the continued generosity by our parishioners to those in need.

St. Vincent de Paul Update We want to remind everyone that Sacred Heart’s St. Vincent de Paul continues to work for those in need in our parish and the Metro area. Please let the Parish Center know of your needs so we can respond accordingly.
We would like to thank the Women’s Guild for continuing to supply desserts for our monthly Connection Café lunches.
Please continue to check the bulletins for our upcoming events. We will be having a book drive in October for Operation Santa Claus. Not only do we work with Toys for Tots at Christmas time, but we also try to include age appropriate books for children aged 0-14 years. So please look around your homes for gently used or new books. We will have boxes in the Parish Center the weekends of October 3/4 and 10/11.
We are also collecting donations for Fountain West Health Center. Due to Covid-19, we had to stop our monthly Bingo night. The residents would appreciate donations of puzzles, games and books. They miss having visitors and these items will help to pass the time. Please contact Holly at [email protected] if you have items to donate.
Divine Renovation Homilies Have you noticed a change in the homilies at Sacred Heart? Part of the Divine Renovation of Sacred Heart includes focusing on the weekend experience including strengthening the homilies. Since May, Fr. Chris and Fr. Nipin have been working to connect with the people in the pews through storytelling, a strong beginning, a call to action at the end of the homily and much more! You may notice Fr. Nipin using fewer notes and standing out in front of the altar to preach. All of these small changes add up to a more vibrant experience that will help inspire and engage us as a parish community. A small group of parishioners serving as a feedback team, some focused coaching and our priests’ willingness to try some new things have created great results!
¿Ha notado un cambio en las homilías en la Iglesia Sacred Heart? Parte de la Divina Renovación de la iglesia incluye el enfoque en la experiencia del fin de semana, que incluye hacer más fuerte las homilías. We have lived in our “starter home” for over 30 years and we are not leaving any time soon. We have four neighbor families who have lived in their houses almost as long as we have. Our children grew up together and we have weathered many storms (both literally and emotionally). About a week ago, we gathered on the deck. As often happens, we talked about neighborhood memories. All four of the families have one daughter and 2 sons (very weird). When the girls were between the ages of about 5 and 10, the mothers had an agreement. If something happened to any of us, the other mothers would be available for morning ponytail duty. While you might think that I am being unreasonable to think that the dads can’t do a ponytail, I am here to tell you, they can not! While nothing happened to any of the mothers, it gave us comfort to know that our friends would be there to comb out the tangles in our daughter’s hair (both literally and emotionally). No matter what is going on in our lives, we need each other. The communities in which we live give us love and support, and many times strength. As we work our way back into our precious community, we have the perfect opportunity for you to find your way back home. We invite you to join one of our SEARCH small groups (beginning on Oct. 1). Back to School Success + Blessing from Fr. Chris
Sacred Heart School was thrilled to welcome their students, staff and teachers back to school last month. School looks different this year. However, thanks to the tireless efforts by the school, all in-person and virtual students, teachers and staff were able to return safely.
Father Chris gave a special blessing of the school before students returned for their first full day of school.
Sacred Heart School continues to have strong enrollment numbers for the 2020-2021 school year: Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade is at 96% capacity!
Sacred Heart School prides itself on being a welcoming and safe community that provides exceptional education in a faith-filled environment for our students and is blessed to be part of the supportive and loving Sacred Heart parish family.
