126 Week 7 To Love God is to Love The Lost (Learning to proclaim the Gospel with anyone) DAY 3 1. Bible Study: What does God want me to learn from His Word? And Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15) A few years ago, two sociologists named Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton were studying the religious views of young people in North America. They coined the phrase “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism” to sum up the predominant religious beliefs in our society today. A summary of these views is as follows: 1. “A God does exist who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.” This is the “Deism” part. 2. “God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.” This is the “Moralistic” part. In other words, the goal of religion is to live a nice, moral life. 3. “The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.” This is the “Therapeutic” part. 4. “God does not need to be particularly involved in one’s life except when God is needed to solve a problem.” This belief now combines the Deistic view with the Therapeutic view. In other words, God exists to make us happy. 5. “Good people go to heaven when they die.” Said another way, salvation is accomplished through morality. How sad. Tragic. Catastrophic. If you have a love for the lost, the above five statements absolutely wreck your heart. In fact, these five statements will likely cause you to weep for the lost just as Jesus did in Luke 19. Brothers and sisters in Christ, in response to Jesus’ great love for us, this is exactly why we must follow the mission of our Shepherd and go into all the world and preach the gospel. We are not in neutral territory. We are at war! Eternity hangs in the balance, and right now in Argyle/DFW, many of our friends, neighbors, family members, classmates, coworkers, etc., are buying into the false narratives listed above. And these beliefs will lead those around us straight to hell with eternal separation from a loving Triune God (Matthew 7:21-23). So how do we make it our mission to proclaim the gospel to people who embrace all or part of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism? As we’ve covered previously in this study, we can share our own story of how we came to faith in Jesus. Never underestimate how powerful your own personal testimony can be! Remember that the demon-
