BEEF WEEK
Kyogle High Schools involvement and celebration of Beef
Week commenced with students participating in the Beef
Education day on Friday the 4th May. Students had the
opportunity to learn about beef cattle nutrition, grooming
and parading with the conclusion of the day being a
schools paraders competition. Charisma Morgan-
McAninly and Zoe Davis had great success placing 1st in
junior paraders and second in the senior paraders class
respectively.
On Saturday 26th May Kyogle High School was well
represented with a steer donated to the school by Jacob
Daley and the three senior handlers that all lead in
different sections. We were fortunate enough to place 2nd
in the schools competition in a large and competitive
class. Beef Week concluded with the NCMC Beef
Industry day which included talks from presenters from
Ausmeat, MLA, NCMC and many more informing the
students of new technology in the industry and best
management practices to be able to produce a more
consistent and profitable product. The day finished with
the results from the carcase competition. Even though we
did not place in the carcase competition it is always a
highlight and useful learning tool to receive the statistics
from the carcase appraisal and compare this information
with the live assessment. Thank you to Robert Daley for
providing the steer and Stuart Brothers Butchers for
purchasing the steer in the live auction and for
consistently supporting the school.

This term is certainly flying by with our Junior School finishing exams today. I applaud the students who have shown diligence and application in completing exams under exam conditions in the Hall—this certainly places you in good stead for future exams.
Open Afternoon—Save the Date
Please save Tuesday 7th August in your calendar for our Annual Open Afternoon. It is a wonderful opportunity for past, present and future students as well as interested members of the community to come and see not only the great facilities we have, but also the teaching and learning occurring in our classrooms. The school will be open from 2pm-5.30pm.
Aerosol Cans
Can I ask parents to work with the school and remind students that aerosol cans are prohibited from our school. Unfortunately there has been some anti-social behaviour causing damage to our school using these cans as well as the medical issues that can arise with students suffering from asthma and allergies. If students do bring aerosol cans to school they will be confiscated and can only be returned to a parent.
Contact Details
Have you checked that your details and emergency contacts are up to date at the school? In a case of emergency, having current details is vitally important—if you believe your details may have changed since your student rerolled at the school either ring the front office on 66321300 or call in and fill out a ‘change of details’ form. Information is often sent out via email, so current email addresses are appreciated as well.
NCCD
All schools across Australia are required to participate annually in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). Please take time to read the notification for Parents and carers attached to this newsletter. If you do have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact Penny Fields our Learning and Support Teacher here at school.
School Attendance
School attendance is important as well as essential for students to achieve their educational best and increase their career options. If your student is away sick, please provide verbal or written notice within 7 days. Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays however we do understand there are times that travel during the school term is necessary and this requires a discussion with me and in some cases, an Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed.
Have a great fortnight.

Talk to children about online privacy issues, making sure they know to never to identify personal information such as their full name, address, age, school and don't ever post photos in school uniform.
Teach your children to respect people’s privacy and don’t share anyone else’s personal information online without permission. Don’t tag photos of your children at their school if your accounts are not set to completely private. This is a child safety issue as anyone driving past can search the school on Instagram and see all of the photos that have been tagged at the school, often by parents who have not set their account to private on Instagram. If your account is not completely private, anyone can see your photos of your child, their name, the name of the cat, where you go on holiday, what your family does on weekends, when birthdays were and other information about your family and your life. Therefore, a complete stranger could make up a story that could be very convincing to your child by using the information you have shared in a public forum of more than 500million users.
If you are going to post anything with a significant fact,
check it first.
Teach your children to understand the importance of
passwords, keeping them private and changing regularly.
Learn how to recognise a scam. If it is too good to be
true, it probably is.
Make sure the apps you allow your kids to use are age
appropriate.
Don’t be patronising or insulting to anyone. This kind of
behaviour may validate bad behaviour in children as they
often see it if you are connected to young people on
social media.
Ban devices from the bedroom from as young as
possible. Set boundaries around use.
Share pictures and videos only with consent. And respect
the privacy of others.
Keep your love-life and arguments off social media.
Stay positive. If you see something you disagree with –
don’t engage.
Consider the fact that children in the background of
photos or videos you take at your child’s school may be
on “no publish” lists. Some children are in protective
custody or witness protection and an innocent
photo posted on social media could be disastrous.
Teach young people not to say, or repeat anything that
they wouldn’t say if the person were standing right in front
of them. Recognise that other people’s opinions may be different to their own and that does not give them permission to attack those opinions online. Remember that even an emoji can be taken out of context by someone reading it. Use your head and your heart. Don’t let emotion be the only thing driving you to post. Make sure you respect classification on games, they are there for a reason. Make sure the young people in your care know that under no circumstances they should go and meet up with anyone they meet online. Stranger Danger rules apply because they are now literally on digital steroids 24x7.

HUMAN SOCIETY AND CULTURE (HSIE)
Year 12 Ancient History students spent a productive day
in a HSC workshop led by a highly experienced exam
marker and university lecturer from UNSW. Students
were given the opportunity to read and mark sample
answers to give them an idea of the quality of work they
should be producing in their HSC exam. It was a very
useful day and the Year 12s should be proud of the way
they participated in the workshop.
TAFE AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
Congratulations to William McKenzie (Year 12). William has been studying a Certificate 3 in Information Digital Media and Technology. William won a TAFE Excellence Award at the annual TAFE awards ceremony held in Lismore recently. Williams Teacher, Ms Dianne Theakstone, stated that
“William holds leadership qualities that the other students
look up to, he is very polite and a positive role model. His
heart is in 3D and he works hard towards his end goal of
game development. Last year we did 2D units within a 3D
program, he immediately threw himself into it and
produced quality cycling animation that fitted all
elements. He turns up each week with his heart on the
line, follows every lesson task and soaks up all
information. He then goes home and practices. Due to
these qualities I allowed William to teach a class lesson
(Rubik cube challenge) in which he shone through and
delivered a fantastic lesson. I would highly recommend
William to employers and believe William will go to the
top of any industry he chooses to proceed in life”.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE
Last week over 70 Year 10 students completed a week of work experience. The students found placements in a diverse range of careers/jobs. There were budding Vets, Doctors, Scientists, Teachers, Tradesmen and many more occupations. The feedback from both businesses and students was that it was a positive experience for all. I would like to thank all of the businesses that hosted our students as the work experience program is an important part of the students work readiness development.
Civil Construction
On Monday 4th June Years 9,10,11 and 12 students had
a presentation on the Civil Construction Industry. The
presenter Kaylene flew up from Sydney specifically to do
this presentation for Kyogle High School.
The presentation explained the diverse range of careers
available in Civil Construction.

MCC NEWS
COWS CREATE CAREERS! MCC students have been participating in the 'Cows Create Careers' program this term and have been caring for 2 poddy calves over two weeks. Students have been learning about how to care for the poddy calves including; feeding regimes, correct hygiene and signs of dehydration. The students are continuing to learn about the dairy industry through completing a group project. Thank you to our local Dairy Farmer, David Binney, for loaning the calves to KHS for this program. STEM CLUB
We spent a number of weeks looking at quadcopters,
drones and having some fun with virtual reality headsets.
Completing the five 'simple' beginner quadcopter
maneuvoure proved more challenging than we expected
but there was lots of fun to be had anyway.
Lachlan Eggins in Year 10 was generous enough to bring
in his amazing drone that he made - it really is a monster,
so much so that he was not even allowed to start the
rotors! We all had a look through the VR headset to get
an experience of what he can see when he's flying it.
Thanks Lachlan (and Dad)!
Last week we started looking into creating games
incorporating hydrolics - more on this in future news. We
also have a team of creative Year 8 students who are
brainstorming what a future school might look like and
there are some fantastic ideas being discussed - perhaps
we have a number of entrepreneurs in the group?
STEM Club is open to all students across Years 8-10 in
Room 23 every Friday Lunchtime. Come a check it out!
