2013 Results: The Hounds and Launch (formerly the Nationals) split the series 1-1

All-Time Series: Both teams are 2-2 against one another

Last year the Hounds and Nationals faced off twice, with each team winning its respective home game. Both contests came down to the wire, with the Nationals winning the Week 4 matchup 16-15 in overtime and the

Hounds winning the Week 13 rematch 14-11. Over the course of two years and four games, the two teams are pretty evenly matched when it comes to their statistics. The Hounds hold a slight edge in goals (57-54) and shots on goal (115-107), while the Launch leads in groundballs (135-135) and faceoffs (64-119 or 53.8%). Launch attack

Stephen Keogh has averaged 3 goals-per-game against the Hounds, however, he is questionable to play in the teams’ first matchup of 2014 due to NLL commitments. The Launch also may be without Kevin Crowley, the 2013

MLL MVP, Offensive Player of the Year and All-Star Game MVP. The Hounds, meanwhile, are once again likely to be missing starting goaltender Adam Ghitelman and faceoff specialist Geoff Snider.

HOUNDS

The Hounds last week found themselves on the wrong

end of a 6-0 score after 15 minutes of play, a deficit

that proved to be too big to come back from. The

team made a goalie change to start the second

quarter, but still fell 15-8 to the Machine. The Hounds

started to click in the second, outscoring the Machine

4-1, but got outworked in the third and shut out again

in the fourth. Scott Rodgers was a brick wall, finishing

the night with 23 saves on 31 shots. The Hounds

squandered many of the few possessions they

actually had – Tim Fallon was 10-27 at the X – with

sloppy passing and bad shot selection. In addition, the

Machine went 3-4 on the powerplay while the

Hounds were 0-2.

Players To Watch

Ryan Flanagan (D) – The third-year veteran paced the Hounds defense last week with six groundballs.

Joe Cummings (A) – An offseason addition, he tallied two goals in his Hounds debut and became a go-to

option on offense.

Matt Danowski (A) – The Hounds’ leading scorer from a year ago, he was held to just one point in Week 1.

LAUNCH

The Launch made their MLL debut last week, with the

core of the now defunct Hamilton Nationals roster

still intact. Despite a 14-10 loss to the Outlaws, the

Launch gave a valiant effort all the way to the end and

showed a lot of promise as a new team. The Launch

found themselves in an 11-1 hole at halftime, but

came out and scored six unanswered goals in the

third to put themselves back in the game.

Unfortunately for the Launch, starting goalie Brett

Queener took a bad shot and needed to be replaced

halfway through the game by backup Adam Fullerton.

Queener’s status for this week is still unknown.

Players To Watch

Casey Powell (A) – The legend shows no signs of slowing down, tallying three goals and three assists

last week to carry the team.

Josh Amidon (M) – The former Hound showed an offensive resurgence Week 1, scoring two goals

(including one 2-pointer).

Chris Mattes (FO) – Held his own at the X last week, going 12-26 against the always intimidating Anthony

Kelly.

NOTEWORTHY – May 3, 2014

THIRD TIME NOT A CHARM: The Hounds for the third straight year lost their season opener. In 2012 and 2013 the team opened at home against the Outlaws, and this year opened at home

against the Machine.

CORE FOUR: There currently are four players on the Hounds roster that have been with the team since its inception in 2012 – Matt Danowski, Adam Ghitelman, Ryan Flanagan and Brett

Schmidt. However, the team has returned 16 players from the 2013 season.

GOING STREAKING: Ryan Young enters Week 2 riding a 19-game streak of recording at least

one point, dating back to Aug. 11, 2012 (including the postseason).

DINO-MYTE: Matt Danowski needs just five more points in the regular season to hit the 250

mark for his career. He also is just 15 goals away from the 150 regular-season goal milestone.

BIRTHDAY BOYS: Two Hounds celebrate their birthdays this week -- Michael McCormack

(4/30) and Pat Byrnes (5/4).
