The concept of the pedestal, the boulder that the busts areaffixed to, is to bring all the el-ements of our people, whichare in our national anthem, intoa visible format. Differenttypes of stones reflected thedifferent areas on Aruba andtogether create our people.

How did he get the nameBoedoem? He says his nick-name he got when he was 7years old. In those days theysold the double shot fireworksat Christmas time, and he litone of these upside down. But,by the time my friends couldtell me that it was lit upsidedown...it was too late. A few of Boedoem’s specialworks of art are his dollsdressed in Carnival’s outfits. He has been making these dollsfor the past eight years. His in-spiration came from his daugh-ter who asked him one day whyhe couldn’t make dresses forher dolls. One day he tried hishands at it and today his dollsare on the market. They spendfamily time every night makingthese dolls which they call“Caboem” dolls. The name is acombination of Carlos andBoe doem, because Carlos(Tromp) is his right hand manin Carnival.

To date, Boedoem has madeover 130 dolls of different vari-ations and outfits. His dolls arevery attractive and very popu-lar items during the CarubbianFestival.

Our tourists are delightedwith their beauty and art work.

Locals also enjoy his artwork, which makes Boedoemvery happy. He says...”I amcommitted to Aruba and aslong as God gives me thestrength and health I will con-tinue contributing my art bywhich I am known to Carnival.I will continue to help wher-ever I can to help Aruba con-tinue to thrive.”

position leader who lost toChavez in October.

Until picking Maduro, 50,as his political heir, Chavezhad never allowed other lea -ders to emerge within his Uni -ted Socialist Party of Vene -zuela (PSUV).

He used the ballot box toconsolidate his power andpush through policies thatdrove a wedge into Venezuelansociety, alienating the wealthywith expropriations whilewooing the poor with socialhandouts.

Chavez won re-election inOctober vowing to make hisself-styled 21st century revolu-tion "irreversible."

The opposition had accusedChavez of misusing publicfunds for his campaign anddominating the airwaves whileforcing government workers toattend rallies through intimida-tion.

His death will particularlyaffect Cuba's communistregime, whose moribund state-run economy has relied heav-ily on Chavez's oil generosity.

Under Fidel Castro's men-toring, Chavez became theface of the radical left in LatinAmerica, with regular diatribesagainst US "imperialism" andthe forging of ties with regimesat odds with Washington inSyria, Libya and Iran.

But despite tense relationswith the United States, Chavezcontinued to export one mil-lion barrels of oil per day upnorth.

The government had sentmixed signals about the presi-dent's health for weeks, warn-ing one day that he wasbattling for his life, yet insist-ing as recently as last weekendthat Chavez was still in chargeand giving orders.

But the opposition repea -tedly accused the governmentof lying about the president'scondition.

Chavez will be mourned bymany of the country's poor, who revered the self-styledrevolutionary for using thecountry's oil riches to fundpopular housing, health, foodand education programs.

And like-minded LatinAmerican leaders like Cuba'sRaul Castro, Ecuador's RafaelCorrea and Bolivia's EvoMorales have lost a closefriend who used his diplomaticmuscle and cheap oil to shoreup their rule.

Chavez died five monthsafter winning an October elec-tion, overcoming a resurgentopposition and public frustra-tion over a rising murder rate, regular blackouts and soaringinflation.

He missed his swearing-infor a new six-year term on Jan-uary 10, but the SupremeCourt approved an indefinitedelay. Under Venezuela's con-stitution an election must beheld within 30 days of thepresident's death.

Indian healthcare system had"little or nothing to do withpatents on pharmaceuticalproducts as all products onIndia's essential drug list arenot patented," Bayer said.

One of the main barriers toaccess to medicines in devel-oping countries such as Indiawas the lack of adequatehealthcare services and infra-structure ensuring that drugswould effectively bring treat-ment to those who need it.

"The order of the Intellec-tual Property Appellate Boardweakens the internationalpatent system and endangerspharmaceutical research,"Bayer argued.

The limited period of mar-keting exclusivity made possi-ble by patents ensures that thecosts associated with the re-search and development of in-novative medicines can berecovered, it said.

Bayer said it has a patientaccess programme in place inIndia for Nexavar, which "sig-nificantly reduces the cost ofthe monthly treatment."

FRANKFURT (AFP) - Ger-man pharmaceuticals giantBayer, maker of Aspirin, vowed Monday to fight a rul-ing by the patent authorities inIndia allowing a local com-pany to produce and sell ageneric copy of its anti-cancerdrug Nexavar.

India's Intellectual PropertyAppellate Board has rejectedan appeal by Bayer against thedecision by a local patent au-thority to grant a license togenerics manufacturer NatcoPharma, allowing it to copyNexavar.

The patent authority al-lowed Natco to make copies ofNexavar on the grounds thatBayer's drug is too expensivefor most people in India.

The license allows Natco tosell generic versions of thedrug at a fraction of Bayer'sprice.

But Bayer said in a state-ment that it "strongly dis-agrees with the conclusions ofthe Intellectual Property Ap-pellate Board."

HANOVER, Germany (AFP)- Of all the futuristic gadgetson show at CeBIT, the world'stop high-tech fair, few drewbigger crowds Tuesday than a3D printer creating solid ob-jects in plastic from a com-puter display.

The machine, developed byGerman company "fabbster",melts plastic and then buildsup incredibly fine "layers" just88 microns (0.088 millimetres)thick, eventually producing asolid physical object with im-pressive detail.

The system is currentlybeing used mainly by smallbusinesses, architects, design-ers and engineers, explainedFabian Grupp, project man-ager.

"You can really make any-thing you can think of," he en-thused. Coming soon is the

WASHINGTON (AFP) - TheUS Supreme Court is consid-ering whether taking DNAswabs during an arrest violatesprivacy, in what one justicesaid was the court's "most im-portant criminal procedurecase" in decades.

The nine judges seemedsplit on the issue during thehearing to decide whether civilliberties trumped the interestof solving crimes.

Alonzo Jay King was ar-rested in April 2009 in Mary-land for acts of aggression. Asaliva sample was taken andsent to a lab, as allowed underMaryland law, without a war-rant and even before the sus-pect had been indicted.

A month after the arrest, theDNA analysis came back, link-ing King to a sample taken fromthe victim of an unsolved rape.

With that DNA evidence,King was convicted and re-ceived a life sentence -- but heappealed, invoking the Consti-

tution's Fourth Amendment, which protects against "unrea-sonable searches andseizures."

The Maryland appeals courtagreed with him, saying theFourth Amendment forbadetaking the DNA sample with-out his permission or a war-rant. Maryland, backed by thefederal government, then tookthe case to the nation's topcourt.

Michael Dreeben, a lawyerfor the government, arguedthat "the state has a compellinginterest in taking informationfrom individuals arrested."

But Chief Justice JohnRoberts, also a conservative, expressed concern that allow-ing samples to be taken duringarrests could lead to a dominoeffect in which they would betaken from "anybody pulledover for a traffic violation."

The high court is expectedto give its decision before theend of June.

"Even in this mode, the sen-sors record all the vital signsand the health assistant notes ifthe person is not performingthe exercises properly," saidSven Feilner from the Fraun-hofer Institute as he put him-self through his paces.

Users can link up with otherusers and "race" against eachother or simply follow a tailor-made fitness programme, monitored closely by the chair.

Ford has already warnedthat it will suffer a loss of $2.0billion this year, after bathing$1.75-billion in the red in2012.

But Odell stressed Tuesdaythat the expected loss this yearis "different in nature than2012," since it is partially dueto the pending closure of twoplants in Britain and one inBelgium, which will leave6,200 people out of work.

He reiterated that the car-maker expects to see its Euro-pean activities return toprofitability by 2015.

LAGOS (AFP) - Oil giantShell on Monday raised alarmover "unprecedented" oil theftin Nigeria, particularly relatedto the sabotage of one of itskey pipelines, and called forurgent action to address theproblem.

Meanwhile they warned itmay not meet production tar-gets on Bonny Light crude inNigeria after it shut down akey pipeline that has been re-peatedly hit by sabotage andtheft.

The cause of the latest leakon the Nembe Creek Trunk-line, discovered on Sunday, was not yet clear. The line hasin the past been hit repeatedlyby oil thieves seeking crudefor sale on the black market.

Shell's Nigeria unit "de-clared force majeure on BonnyLight offtake programme ef-fective 1600 hours Nigeriantime today, 5th March, follow-ing the shutdown of NembeCreek Trunkline (NCTL) aftera leak was observed on Sun-day," it said.

"The cause will be deter-mined by a Joint InvestigationVisit, which will be scheduledonce the leak point has beenexcavated."

Force majeure is a legalterm releasing a company fromcontractual obligations due tocircumstances beyond its con-trol. Bonny Light is one of themain grades of crude oil pro-duced in Nigeria.

On Monday, Shell raisedalarm over oil theft of theNembe Creek line, adding itwould not rule out closingdown the pipeline if such at-tacks continued.

The comments were the lat-est from the industry over theproblem of oil theft, which hasbeen estimated to cost Nigeria,Africa's biggest oil producer, some $6 billion (4.6 billioneuros) per year.

Output in Nigeria, Africa'slargest oil producer, has beenat around 2.0 million barrelsper day.

A 2009 amnesty deal led toa sharp decline in unrest in theoil-producing Niger Delta re-gion, but criminal activity hassince flourished.

While Shell blames most ofthe spills on sabotage, activistsargue that the company doesnot do enough to prevent suchincidents and effectively cleanup the damage when they dooccur.
