NEW DELHI, July 5:
The High Courts of Bombayand Madras are set to undergo achange in their names.
Amid demands, the UnionCabinet today approved a LawMinistry proposal to change thenames of the two High Courtsthrough an Act of Parliament tocorrespond to the present namesof the cities Mumbai andChennai respectively.
There have been demands torename the High Courts asMumbai High Court andChennai High Court after themetros were rechristened in1990s.
The proposal of theDepartment of Justice in theLaw Ministry is to bring a bill— The High Courts (Alterationof Names) Bill, 2016— torename the two High Courtsestablished in 1860s underIndian High Court Act, 1861.But at present, there is no cen-
tral law under which the propos-al for change of names of theseHigh Courts can be addressed.
Briefing reporters on thedecisions of the Union Cabinet,Union Minister Ravi ShankarPrasad said the name of theCalcutta High Court too will bechanged to Kolkata High Court.But an official released issuedlater mentioned only the Madrasand the Bombay High Courts.
There have also beendemands to rename the CalcuttaHigh Court as the Kolkata HighCourt.
The Calcutta High Court hasthe distinction of being the firstHigh Court and one of the threechartered High Courts to be set upin India, along with the HighCourts of Bombay, Madras. It wasformally opened on July 1, 1862.
Earlier, the Government hadplanned to vest the Presidentwith powers to rename a High
Court in consultation with theGovernor, the Chief Ministerand the Chief Justice of thatState. But the idea has beenshelved. The Government nowplans to consider such demandsof change in name on a case-by-case basis, sources said.

CCTVs for sensitiveareas on IB
PATHANKOT, July 5:CCTV cameras will soon be
installed at key locations,including near Indo-Pak border,by the Punjab police as part ofits plans to enhance surveillanceand security in wake of the twomajor terror strikes in the Statein the past one year.
"CCTV (Cameras) will beinstalled in Batala, Gurdaspur andPathankot areas for which outlayof Rs 75 lakh will be spent," apolice official said today.
He said the plan is to installCCTV cameras also near Indo-Pak international border, atinter-state border areas, in citiesand other sensitive locations forkeeping a vigil.
The State police expect thework of installing the CCTVcameras would be completed in2-3 months.
Besides, security along the107-km long Amritsar-Pathankotrailway track has been strength-ened by the State Governmentrailway police, SP (GRP),Lakhwinderpal Singh said.(PTI)
