PRIVATE ZONE IN FLORIDA FOR THERAPYBy Claire Novak
Grade I winner Private Zone will get some well-
deserved time off, co-owner and racing manager
Rene Douglas said.
The Macho Uno gelding shipped Dec. 1 to The
Sanctuary Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Center
near Ocala, Fla. Second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint
(gr. I), Private Zone was a tired fifth as the favorite in
the Cigar Mile (gr. I) Nov. 28. It was his first start for
trainer Brian Lynch, who aborted a planned breeze
prior to the race.
"We never had a chance to work him, and at that
point I should have decided not to go," Douglas
said. "But he came out good. He has little 6-year-old
issues; just wear and tear. I want to bring him back to
Florida and give him all the treatment he deserves.
The Sanctuary seems like a nice place, and he can go
to the hyperbaric chamber."
Private Zone was ninth in the 2013 Dubai Golden
Shaheen (UAE-I), a race he could target in 2016. "I
guarantee everyone will see a new Private Zone next
year," Douglas said. BH

LADY ELI CONTINUES TO MAKE PROGRESSBy Lenny Shulman
Undefeated 3-year-old filly Lady Eli, continuing
her recovery from laminitis, arrived at trainer
Chad Brown's shedrow at Palm Meadows Training
Center in Florida Nov. 29 and is tack-walking as part
of the next phase of her rehabilitation.
"We're thrilled with how she looks," Brown said.
"Her X-rays appear normal, and there is no evi-
dence of the laminitic episode. She's trotting sound
on the shank and her condition looks excellent."
There is no timetable for Lady Eli to go to the
training track. "I'm just going to take it week-to-
week," Brown said.
Lady Eli, campaigned by Sheep Pond Partners,
had been rehabbing since late September at Dell
Ridge Farm near Lexington under the care of farm
manager Des Ryan and foot specialist Dr. Bryan
Fraley. Ryan said Lady Eli did everything the right
way while at the farm and that she left "pretty much
in regular shoes. We're excited to get her back to
Chad."
Bred by Catesby Clay and his Runnymede Farm,
Lady Eli, by Divine Park, has earned $1,449,800. BH

MARES BRING HIGH PRICES ON DAY 2By Carl Evans
Big names with recent top-grade victories studded
the premier session of the Tattersalls mares sale
Dec. 1, but none had the boxes ticked like Hanky
Panky.
The 5-year-old Galileo mare out of Mariah's
Storm is a half sister to leading sire Giant's Cause-
way and to You'resothrilling, dam of classic-winning
milers Gleneagles and Marvellous. Another half sis-
ter, Love Me Only, produced Storm the Stars, who
placed in two Derbys this year. Also illuminating
Hanky Panky's glittering page is her Dubawi cover.
Having visited Sheikh Mohammed's Dalham Hall
for that mating, she returns there, bought by John
Ferguson for 2.7 million guineas ($4,268,376) from
John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farms.
M.V. Magnier purchased group I-winning juve-
nile Tiggy Wiggy for 2.1 million guineas ($3,319,848)
from Charles Noell and John Moores' Merriebelle
Stable. Qualify, an Oaks (Eng-I) winner and a rarity
to be offered in the year of her classic triumph, was
another for Sheikh Mohammed at 1.6 million guin-
eas ($2,529,408).
Gross reached 27,657,000 guineas ($43,722,398)
down 5% while the average of 170,722 guineas
($269,890) increased 1%. BH

SAINT LIAM'S LEGACY CONTINUESBy Ron Mitchell
Saint Liam's legacy continues: The ill-
fated stallion was represented by his
first stakes winner as a broodmare sire
when Stoneway Farm's homebred 3-year-
old Candy Ride filly Ahh Chocolate won
the Nov. 26 Falls City Handicap (gr. II) at
Churchill Downs.
A brilliant racehorse, Saint Liam carried
Horse of the Year honors and great expec-
tations when he retired to Lane's End with
16 top-three finishes from 20 starts and
earnings of nearly $4.5 million. However,
the son of Saint Ballado stood only one
season. In August 2006 while being led to
his paddock, he fell, fractured his left hind
leg, and was euthanized.
From that single crop, Saint Liam has
sired 10 stakes winners, five of which won
graded stakes. His top runner, Havre de Grace, was
voted Horse of the Year of 2011 for Fox Hill Farm and
sold at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November sale for $10
million to Mandy Pope.
The Falls City was the first stakes victory for Ahh
Chocolate, who defeated older fillies and mares in
the Churchill fixture. BH
TURFWAY APPROVED FOR HISTORICAL RACINGBy Frank Angst
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission Dec. 1 ap-
proved adding historical racing machines at Turf-
way Park, the state's fourth Thor-
oughbred track to offer the games
that look like video lottery terminals
but base payouts on a pari-mutuel
formula.
Likely acting before any potential
changes in political winds—Gov.-
elect Matt Bevin will take office
Dec. 8—Turfway asked and received
approval for 250 machines. Officials
from Turfway owner Rock Gaming
said they are working on construc-
tion contracts for an on-site facility
and couldn't say whether the games
would be up and running in 2016.
Historic racing machines are in
place at Kentucky Downs, Ellis Park,
and in a joint effort with Keeneland
at Red Mile, a Lexington Standardbred track.
Meanwhile, Keeneland's efforts to build a Quarter
Horse track that would include historical racing ma-
chines in Corbin, Ky., have been slowed by litigation
that prevented the KHRC from considering Keene-
land's license request at the Dec. 1 meeting. BH

CAREER BEST FOR PAGE McKENNEYBy Frank Angst
Who is the best older horse in training without
a graded stakes win? If the answer is not Page
McKenney, the 5-year-old Eavesdropper gelding cer-
tainly belongs in the conversation.
On Nov. 25 at Penn National, Page McKenney,
trained by Mid-Atlantic based Mary Eppler, registered
the week's best Equibase Speed Figure, a career-best
124 in the Swatara Stakes. His previous best of 118
had been earned two starts back in a close second in
the Roanoke Stakes at Parx Racing.
With the half-length Swatara victory over grade III
winner Kid Cruz, who also earned a 124 in the 1 1/16-
mile test, Page McKenney earned his second stakes win in 11 days, having taken the Richard W. Small at Laurel
Park for his fourth stakes win this season and seventh in the past two seasons.
Owned by Adam Staple and Jalin Stable, Page McKenney has placed in nine other stakes, including a run-
ner-up finish in this year's Pimlico Special (gr. III) and third-place finishes in two other graded stakes.BH

STALLIONS
MAKING SENSE OF 'SEASONOMICS'
When I call an agent or farm to discuss sea-
sons for mares, I wear my "breeder's hat."
But it's not unusual that the farm's explanation
of its pricing policies causes me to instinctively
don my "economist/consultant's" hat. I almost
always stifle the little voice in my head when
that happens, perhaps because I was subcon-
sciously saving its comments for this column.
A few years back I called a farm to report on
a foal-share newborn shortly after the Kentucky
Derby was won by a colt sired by one of the
farm's stallions. The representative volunteered
that the farm had been besieged by calls and
had not raised his fee.
The little voice in my head piped up, "Either
the stallion was overpriced to begin with, or the
farm manager was asleep in Economics 101
when they talked about supply and demand."
There was a windfall to be had; either the stal-
lion shareholders or the folks who waited until
the last minute to book a mare would benefit
from it. Guess which group a consultant would
argue for?
I called another farm in mid-May to inquire
about a stallion I knew wasn't booked full at
$25,000. It would not budge from $22,500. The
little voice suggested, "Ask them if they've ever
tried to sell a mare in foal on a late-May cover—
or a grass horse in October."
In an otherwise top-notch presentation to
my equine finance class by one of my favorite
industry folks, consider this statement: "When I
managed a farm, we always charged everyone
the same price for seasons because, otherwise, I
couldn't remember who paid what."
The little voice went berserk. "That's why we
have software!" it barked in my brain. It then
added, "You were online looking at car rental
prices and saw the same car priced by the same
company at eight different prices over the next
12 days! If it works for Hertz, maybe he should
ponder a parallel paradigm."
In other situations the little voice has opined
that stallion managers would come closer to the
"set marginal cost equal to marginal revenue"
rule from Economics 101 if they pay shipping
fees for out-of-state mares; if they discount sea-
sons for quality mares for young but not for old
stallions; if they apply quantity discounts; and
if they fill a first-year stallion's book even if they
have to give seasons away.
The little voice is short on diplomacy, and it
doesn't always consider the nuances of particu-
lar circumstances. But it's right to ask whether
we're doing things because that's the way we've
always done them, or because that's the way
they ought to be done. BH
